Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth are overrepresented in the homeless youth population. It has been estimated that approximately 25-40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. A large proportion of youth are either kicked out of the house or forced to leave home after coming-out to their family as LGBTQ. Therefore, homophobia and transphobia are major causes of youth homelessness. For more information on homelessness and LGBTQ youth please visit the Homeless Hub: www.homelesshub.ca

Wishing all my Flickr followers a wonderful Christmas

I met this child in Nuh, a small village situated in the valleys of Aravali Hills. When I was interacting with the villagers there, this child came and started staring me. I was mesmerized by his eyes. It feels as if they were questioning me something.

I suddenly took out my camera and without wasting any time, I captured his glowing eyes.

I personally love this shot maybe because of the innocence of this child.

(Questioning)

Re-writing history

In his photo series, the french photographer, Nicolas Demeersman, invites us to see « history » from another point of view, questioning the images we see everyday, in mainstream media & film.

Well known, white, historical figures are presented as black people, in new and sometimes very clichéd scenarios, attempting to question what many people see as their reality.

We rarely think about the struggle of being ethnic in a “white world”, because many of us do not believe this struggle exists, until we experience it for ourselves. In media, there are very few black actors and cartoon characters in lead roles. The black character is always the first to die in horror films or is cast as the « best, funny friend ». Directors, producers, writers… are overlooked at awards ceremonies. This is happening in the 21st century, a time when all the consensus, intellectual and media, conclude that racism is one of the worst things to occur in the world.

One of the most obvious reasons for all of this, is that the history we know and learn about black culture, tends to focus on the bad events, such as slavery or colonisation… Very few people can name a good event, apart from the launch of Beyoncé’s last album.

Shot in studio, staged and retouched, the photographer plays with the codes of advertising and media, which sometimes excludes the black character/history. All the while creating amazing marketing words and sentences to justify this exclusion. The photographer uses all the « black clichés », to exaggerate the stories of the characters, creating a funny, sacastic photo series, that puts the onlooker at ease.

As if Snow White would have a banana instead of an apple or Hitler would question his own face. A black Wonder Woman for all the little girls to look up to, a black Napolean & Cesar, leaders of two the greatest Empires of their time, and a black Obelix, still larger than life. History is made by heroes and characters, not their skin.

“All my thoughts are directed towards England. I want only for a favourable wind to plant the Imperial Eagle on the Tower of London.” – Napoleon

Continuing with the subject of the threat of invasion from France in 1803/1804, one of the areas considered to be the target of such an invading force from across the sea was the flat, wide beaches of the Romney Marsh adjoining the small port at Rye.

The Romney Marsh had been left virtually undefended in the belief that it could be quickly flooded and the subsequent morass, criss-crossed by drainage ditches, would be impassable. But by 1803 the very real threat of Napoleonic invasion led to questioning of this long held view. After much deliberation Lt-Col John Brown, Commandant of the Royal Staff Corps, rejected it as unworkable, concerned by the need for ten days advance warning and the potential embarrassment, chaos and huge expense that would result from a false alarm.

Brown came up with another idea. He suggested that a canal be built from Seabrook, near Folkestone around the back of the Romney Marsh to the River Rother near Rye, a distance of 19 miles. The canal system would have sources of water from the sea and the River Rother. It would be 19 metres wide at the surface, 13.5 metres wide at the bottom and 3 metres deep. The excavated soil would be piled on to the northern bank to make a parapet, behind which troops could be positioned and moved out of sight of the enemy. The canal would also have ‘kinks’ to allow enfilading fire along the length of the canal, if the enemy attempted to cross it.

The Prime Minister, William Pitt, enthusiastically endorsed the scheme in September 1804 and preliminary plans were quickly made. The renowned engineer John Rennie, whose previous projects included the construction of London and Waterloo Bridges, was appointed as consultant engineer and it was proposed that the canal be extended from the River Rother to Cliff End, East Sussex incorporating the River Brede in the process. The total length of the canal would be 28 miles, of which 22.5 miles had to be dug. It was estimated that it would be completed by June 1805 and cost £200,000.

The local landowners still needed to be convinced of the advantages of the scheme, and Pitt met with them on October 24 1804 at the New Hall, Dymchurch and explained that the canal would not only help to defend their country but would be a major drainage system for the winter, and a reservoir for the summer and would greatly improve conditions on the Marsh. “The airs and waters of the Romney Marsh are both foul and fatal” declared Edward Hasted in the late Eighteenth Century. Indeed the Romney Marsh was described as one of the unhealthiest and sickly places in the whole of Kent. The closure of New Romney’s port, and the Black Death ruined the area’s prosperity and the land was neglected. Stagnant water lay in the ditches, an evil stench hang in the air and disease was rife. Marsh Ague and Malaria harassed the Marsh people, keeping the population low and the death rate high.

Perhaps because of this, the landowners didn’t take a lot of persuading, but in any event Pitt was successful, being popular with the locals, who affectionately referred to the canal as “Mr. Pitt’s Ditch”.

On October 30 1804 the first sod of the Royal Military Canal was dug at Seabrook. But all did not go well. Harsh winter weather and severe flooding, as well as difficulty in attracting labourers - known as navvies - meant that the original completion date appeared wildly optimistic. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Rennie blamed the incompetence and greed of the contractors, accusing them of overcharging and poor supervision. By May 1805 the canal project was close to disaster: only six miles had been completed and work had stopped. William Pitt intervened and both the contractors and Rennie were dismissed.

The project was put in the hands of the Quartermaster-General’s department with Lt-Col. Brown in command. Navvies dug the canal, while the military built the ramparts and turfed the banks. Flooding continued to be a barrier to progress and hand pumps were used day and night to keep the trench from filling with water. Eventually powerful steam-driven pumps were used to clear the water.

At its peak there were 1,500 men working on the canal. The canal was dug entirely by hand, using picks and shovels and the soil was carried away in wheelbarrows. Once the canal was dug it was lined with clay. The change of command and the greater work force speeded progress so that by August 1806 the canal was open from Seabrook to the River Rother. However, due to the lost time and increasing problems encountered by the builders, the original dimensions of the canal were greatly reduced so that for most of its length the canal is half its planned width.

Iden Lock was completed in September 1808, which linked the canal to the River Rother and Rye Harbour, effectively turning the Romney Marsh into an island, but it wasn’t until April 1809 that the canal was actually completed. By that time, the real threat of invasion had long since passed, though not until Napoleon’s defeat in Russia in 1812 could Britain truly regard the threat as ended.

Whether or not the canal would have been successful we shall never know. It cost a huge amount of public money and after the threat had passed critics were quick to point out that French armies had crossed the Rhine and the Danube easily enough, and were unlikely to be held back by a canal thirty feet wide at most.

The canal became an embarrassment to the Government and they desperately needed to find ways of recovering some of the money spent, and so they opened it to navigation and collected tolls for the transportation of produce and goods. In 1810 the canal was opened for public use and there was a regular barge service running between Hythe and Rye, which took around four hours to complete. But the canal, traffic was never heavy, and the opening of the Ashford to Hastings railway line in 1851 further decreased its use. The ever spiralling costs of maintenance and the drop in toll receipts caused the Government to take steps to unburden itself from the canal. The stretch from Iden Lock to West Hythe was leased to the Lords of the Romney Marsh for 999 years at an annual rent of one shilling, while the town of Hythe purchased the remaining stretch that ran through the town, for conversion to ornamental waters. The canal west of Rye was sold to four individual owners. By the late nineteenth century the canal trade had all but gone. The last ever toll was collected at Iden Lock on December 15 1909. Today Iden lock is a sluice, so the main part of the canal is isolated. The eastern section of the canal is still in use for pleasure boats.

Despite previous doubts surrounding the canal’s usefulness for defence in the nineteenth century, it was quickly requisitioned by the War Department in 1935 as war in Europe became increasingly likely. The banks were lined with pill-boxes as the nation awaited invasion, this time by Hitler, but once again there was no invasion. I doubt Hitler’s armies would have been handicapped any more than Napoleon’s, with or without concrete pill-boxes.

But despite its critics, there is no doubt that the canal has benefitted the Marsh which is covered by a dense network of drainage ditches which are essential to the continued survival of the Marsh, given such a large proportion of it is below sea level. The drainage dykes and ditches, known locally as sewers, drain the water from the farm land and allow it to flow either to the sea via outfalls or is pumped in to the Royal Military Canal, eventually also ending up in the sea. These ditches support a wide range of watery wildlife such as water voles, great crested newts and medicinal leeches.

Q. Black wall tires?

A. Yeah. We headed towards the end of Hawaiian Beaches towards the Beach Road on the right hand side. We continued to go through a dirt road.

Q. Is that dirt road commonly known as the Beach Road?

A. Beach Road. It comes out at Kapoho. Okay, wait. I gotta say about the stops. Okay, we made several stops to smoke cocaine. And after, well we kept continuing on little ways. We came out by an intersection going towards Kapoho and that's where we saw a girl standing up. As we were going past my friend Ian looked towards the side and he said, "Ho look at that girl." Then we continued to go forward down the road.

Q. Would that be towards Pohiki?

A. Yes. Then we reached by these mailboxes area that we turned around. That place is better known as Red Road where they call it. And we headed back towards the girl.

Q. Did Ian tell you why he had turned around or why he wanted to get back where the girl was?

A. No, not at that point. Little while after as we were going

he wanted to talk to the girl he said. I guess to make a date or something.

Q. Okay, then what happened?

A. Then we headed back and he was going faster and I was telling him for slow down. About 40-45 miles per hour because I looked at the speedometer. And then he just kept on going towards the girl. The next thing I knew I felt like going over a speed bump real fast. How many times we went over? About I would say roughly two times.

Q. And that two times felt like going over a speed bump?

A. Going forward and reversing.

Q. Prior to feeling like twice you went over a speed bump, did you see a girl at all? Before you ran her over?

A. Before I seen her going across. Kinda walking across.

Q. Okay, you earlier told me that, I know you are unclear but you were pretty sure that she had a bike with her.

Well not really just trying different looks in a photo shoot. This was at my last one at Tella's along with Trudy.

Detectives probing the kidnaps of two men in Salford last month are questioning five suspects after dawn raids this morning saw properties targeted across the city and Manchester as part of the investigation.

Earlier today (Thursday 7 April) officers from our Tactical Aid Unit (TAU), alongside local officers, hit six addresses in Blackley, Gorton and Salford.

The action comes after we received a report on the evening of Thursday 24 March regarding a man being assaulted and dragged into a car by a group of three men on Clarendon Park.

Thankfully after enquiries by specialist investigators, the victim - a man in his 20s - was found safe and well with some physical injuries but none that required hospital treatment.

Subsequent enquiries have led detectives from our Swinton CID to believe that a second man - also aged in his 20s - was also targeted by the group but was able to flee from the offenders vehicle.

We think that the incidents have been targeted attacks emanating from a possible drugs dispute involving organised criminals and we're keen to ensure that any potential suspects are identified and brought to custody for questioning.

Five men aged between 20 and 30 are currently in two custody sites across Greater Manchester and await questioning on suspicion of kidnap.

Anyone with concerns or information about suspicious activity in their area should contact us online via LiveChat, if able, or by calling 101 knowing that information will be treated with the strictest confidence.

Barbed wire from a prison in Israel where the British imprisoned and executed Jewish terrorists. Now a bookcover; BORDER INTERROGATIONS Questioning Spanish Frontiers

Got inspired while reading a book questioning ultimate reality. "Trespassing on Einstein's Lawn"- Amanda Gefter

Schrödinger's cat is a famous illustration of the principle in quantum theory of superposition, proposed by Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. Schrödinger's cat serves to demonstrate the apparent conflict between what quantum theory tells us is true about the nature and behavior of matter on the microscopic level and what we observe to be true about the nature and behavior of matter on the macroscopic level

And so we drove, meeting only two other vehicles coming from the other direction, wherever that may be

My mum bristled at our toilet stop in the middle of nowhere

Myself, focusing on the importance of standing downwind

Hurtling forward in rain of pebbles, I craned my neck, whipping it almost backwards

Did the sign say to turn left? No one else saw anything. the driver looked at me questioningly

Yet it slowly gnawed at me, back of the mind nagging

20minutes in, my brother asked me again what's wrong

And I made my first faux pas

We turned back.

Conjuring up our guiding principle for the rest of the drive - head in X minutes, if it's not right we'd take the other fork

Stopping the car by the sign I strained my eyes to see, illogically, futilely, what lay on the other path

Crudely painted on roughly hewn wood nailed on a stick, it hung loosely, infuriatingly pointing to somewhere in between both roads

I made a mental coin toss and decided to take our initial route

And it slowly went downhill after... as the subsequent signs said nothing of Cobra Station nor the place we want to go

The sparse directions mentiond nothing of forks or turns and I made gamble after gamble

Imagining myself a modern day woodsman, scout or a tracker, Kit Carson

With moistened finger to the sky, looking intently at the dirt tracks, fresh?, to see from whence vehicle traveled recently

Without cellular coverage nor the calmness afforded by GPS

Our fears slowly congealed as the sun began to set, and the petrol gauge slowly inched its way down

In distinct deja vu, the inner compartment of the car felt akin the other times when we were stuck:

Mutterings of prayer, bobbing Adam's apples, cold sweat forming as the air-conditioning was again switched off to conserve fuel

Optimism at the beginning had us pointing to yonder solitary mountains, that's Mount Augustus over there

But now that seemed flat, bitter superstition of tempting fate;

everytime we turned away from another rocky behemoth in the horizon, my stomach clenched tighter

Then dusk crept up on us, the last rays of sunlight glinting off the rearview mirror, driving eastwards into more darkness

Of all the cloudless days we've had thus far, they ironically decided to display possibly the most beautiful sunset I've ever witnessed in my life

A pallete of angry red blushing pink and brilliant orange glowed beneath the curling carpet of clouds, piped cream on a cake

Blue from a painter's soft brush brush washed over the rest

Stopping would be the death of me I thought to myself, willing my mind to imprint the scene onto my memory banks

The sun then gave up on us, and we trundled along into the twilight; blue hour never seemed so terrifying

At the next fork we spied a water tower, sign that said a station was nearby

Yet we were not meant to make anymore turns. I pointed ahead, let's go up this way for 10mins

Pig headed stubborness made me whisper another 5 minutes, and then another 5

Until it didn't feel right no more, one eye on the meter, we turned back

And made our way to the farmstead, another that's dark and desolate

With a light plane in the hangar, an antenna tower sprung up from its compound

Something, anything, borrow his phone, call Jim Millar, Cobra Station

No surprises this time, radio in the machine/tool shed again

A veteran now with lonely cottages, I simply made my way to the main house

Cupping my hands, I peered in; the lights were on but nobody was home

Moving from room to room, I then saw a middle-aged man, balding, bespectacled

Watching the telly with his back towards me

I shouted, knuckles rapping the glass window panes on the door rat-a-tat-tat

Admittedly I felt afraid when he wasn't moved at all, my thoughts drifting towards the paranormal

Curling my fingers to form a fist, I hammered at the door and rattled, jiggled the doorknob

And he turned around! Came out over the back and told us how to get to our destination

We were in fact on the right track, if only we had kept at it for another ten minutes!

The bounce was back in our steps, my brother skipped back to the driver's seat, I punched the air

It was pitch black by then, kangaroos skipped around off the road, the headlights barely useful, fighting against the night

The signage to the inn was such a sweet sight; we pulled in at the front, Spider barking madly at the intruders

My recollection's hazy at this point but I wouldn't be surprised if I had wiped a tear off my cheek

Relief and rejoice

Lomo's Latest Stick Grenade - Spinner 360

Wow, be sure to be prepared for questioning in airports if you bring this with you. The latest and coolest camera from Lomo looks just like a stick grenade, just look at the profile and you can imagine what it looks like in an X-ray scan.

Hold the handle with one hand, pull the ring with the other and release, you get your 360 shots at a price far cheaper than a Horizon. Of course after 5 or 6 spins, your 36 frames run out, definitely a grenade to burn films. You also have a choice to spin the camera with your other hand in a constant fashion instead of using the built-in spring.

The cool thing about this is that there is no shutter in this thing, the ~66 degree lens (with a shooting distance from 1m to infinity) behind the slit is directly exposing film without any shutter leafs in front. So you shoot not by a click but by a spin.

Simple as a Holga, there is just the sunny vs. cloudy setting to adjust for the amount of light entering the camera. The same switch is used for film rewind. At the bottom of the handle is a tripod mount.

It is a bit heavy comparing to a typical Lomo camera mainly because of the weight of the metal hood. In addition to reducing light entering from the lens, the hood is made of metal to compensate the centripetal force generated by the body when it spins. Unscrew the hood and spin the camera, you will see what I mean.

There is a cute lever on top of the camera with a Spinner Dolphin, well now you know why is it named Spinner 360. A hotshoe exists but there is no contact points for your typical flash. It makes sense because a typical flash will only fire when there is a shutter release and there is no shutter on Spinner 360. I am guessing that this is for you to mount your bike headlight on it so you can lighten up your photos in low light conditions.

I've passed along the sample to our new colleague to try so I haven't gotten any experience developing the film. Oh BTW, the film compartment expose the entire film so you will get the cool sprocket holes effect by default. We could only reserve about 20pcs in city'super/LOG-ON for our Travel Photo Cafe 2010! I hope the next batch of new stock will arrive soon.

Police in Bury have arrested eight people following drugs warrants across the town this morning.

Shortly after 6am today, Wednesday 27 February 2013, police raided seven homes at addresses in Radcliffe, Bury and Ramsbottom. They have been taken into police custody for questioning.

It follows arrests made earlier this month in an ongoing fight against organised crime and the supply of Class A drugs in Bury.

Chief Superintendent Caroline Ball, divisional commander at Bury said: “We continue to target those concerned in the sale and supply of Class A drugs across Bury. I hope these arrests, and those over the last year, show the community we are committed in our fight against organised crime.

“Drugs can have a huge effect on the community whether that’s through burglary, robbery or vehicle crime, so cracking down on them is a priority.

“By taking these dealers off the streets we can disrupt the sale of illegal drugs as well as seizing their assets which is then put back into the community through the Proceeds of Crime Act.”

Dozens of officers were involved in the raids, including specialist officers from GMP’s tactical aid and dogs units, as well as divisional officers.

The raids were watched by several members of the community and councillors as well as Bury Mayor, Joan Grimshaw, who were invited along so they could witness first-hand how police are putting a stop to illegal drugs activity in their neighbourhood.

Drugs workers are available throughout the day to offer services to any prisoners that currently use drugs and who may want help to stop. Those seeking help for drugs abuse can speak to the drugs treatment service on 0161 253 6488.

The warrants were carried out following months of intelligence gathering and follow on from numerous operations in Bury over the last 12 months which have resulted in over 60 people arrested and charged with over 160 drugs offences. Thirteen of those arrested received prison sentences amounting to 30 years, nine are awaiting sentencing and 29 await trial. Police have seized 30 kilos of heroin, 30 kilos of amphetamine and ¾ of a kilo of cocaine, as well as £120,000 in this time.

Anyone with information about those involved in drug-related activity in their area should call police at Bury, in confidence if needed, on 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

In the midst of a critique we were asked to free write on our reactions to each project. While I found myself writing about things such as; how proud I was of how far everyone had come in their form explorations, questioning how I could condition my body to not need sleep (thus being able to produce much more), magic and illusion, laughing until my face hurts, questioning conventions and even reflecting upon my delight in my decision to come to graduate school at NC State, I found a common theme resonating. It was about rules, how I feel the suffocating need to always follow them and how this has quite possibly stunted my creativity and my ability to truly explore. It seems to have permeated every aspect of my life. I have to follow a recipe, referring to it for every step and have a bit of anxiety if I have to veer at all. One might say my moral compass is painfully strong.

Other fellow classmates have somehow managed to escape this need and have in turn created some rather interesting and delightful things. I always think during presentations, "but, wait, you didn't follow the rules," but I have found that it doesn't seem to always matter. The rules are not the point.

For Project Three we were asked to elaborate on one aspect of these free writings and create another piece of writing that we would "perform" in front of the class. Then use in the creation of a strictly typographic interface. I choose to elaborate on my fascination with the rules and to attempt to break myself free (at least a small bit). I knew that I could not just jump write into breaking rules, so the best way to get a Rule Follower to become a Rule Breaker is to create a set of rules, naturally.

For the performance aspect of this project I was inspired from the idea of a scavenger hunt and sent my fellow classmates on a quest for the rules.

There was also an audio element. The participant listened to a rule then followed a clue with a set of instructions on where to find the next. All along the way they were asked to bend, break or ignore the rules by entering the bathroom of the opposite sex, using their cell phone in the library, ignoring "Do Not Enter" signs and indulging in an abundance of sugary, frosted cookies with sprinkles.

For the typographic interface experience I designed a set of unconventional posters that would encourage the viewer to question the conventions of reading. Along with throwing out the conventional rules of writing and reading I wrapped posters around corners, in doorways, up stairs and on the ceiling. The intention was to inspire or motivate the viewer to alter their patterns of viewing and reading text by breaking the rules.

Police in Bury have arrested 14 people following drugs warrants across the town this morning.

Shortly after 6am today, Wednesday 6 February 2013, police raided 15 homes at addresses in Radcliffe, Whitefield, Bury east and Bolton.

Fourteen people were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences including conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. They have been taken into police custody for questioning.

Drugs and cash have also been seized.

Chief Superintendent Caroline Ball, divisional commander at Bury said: "Drugs are a major factor in many other crimes such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime and so cracking down on those involved is a big priority for us.

"Today's arrests are part of a continued fight against organised crime groups in the area and follow on from arrests and seizures made earlier this year relating to the sale and supply of drugs.

"Tackling organised crime in this way not only causes significant disruption to both users and suppliers of illegal drugs, it also means they will end up out of pocket as we can seize the assets through the Proceeds of Crime Act and put that cash back into the community."

Dozens of officers were involved in the raids, including specialist officers from GMP's tactical aid and dogs units, as well as divisional officers from Bury.

The raids were watched by several members of the community and councillors as well as the Police and Crime Commissioner, Tony Lloyd, who were invited along so they could witness first-hand how police are putting a stop to drugs activity in their neighbourhood.

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd said: "This operation is a welcome example of how the police are keeping up the pressure on organised crime, to make it impossible for criminals to operate and bring misery on our communities. Inviting local councillors and residents to witness today's activity first hand, highlights how vital it is for the police, partners and the community to stand together to drive crime out of our neighbourhoods."

Drugs workers are also available throughout the day to offer services to any prisoners that currently use drugs and who may want help to stop.

The warrants were carried out following months of intelligence gathering and follow on from numerous operations in Bury over the last 12 months which have resulted in 34 people arrested and charged with over 120 drugs offences.

Although there is no questioning the superior off road abilities of the latest full sized Range Rover its doubtful any would see military action due to their eye watering purchase price! In miniature form these constraints don't apply and is why we get to see this camouflaged version made by the Chinese toy company Miniauto. With normal licensed 1/64 Range Rover models thin on the ground companies like this are happy to fill that gap with their own inexpensive offerings which are often just as good as the established competition especially here with its Siku like qualities. This may well be an unlicensed casting but there is certainly no problems with its accurate styling even down to the distinctive gills on the front door which naturally open to reveal a realistic and well sculptured interior. A nice chunky weighty model with clear plastic headlamps and alloy effect wheels with separate rubber tyres. Part of a five vehicle set bought directly from China in October 2016. Mint and boxed.

I was planning on posting up tons of photos from Abu Dhabi and Dubai... but after this trip to Israel, those photos will have to wait to make room for this above photo.

That's me, at the Israeli/Jordanian border (King Husayn Bridge) in a small hallway where I sat for two hours, being interrogated.

Separated from the two other members in my party (both of whom were also interrogated at some point in the night), they had me locked away in a dingy and narrow hall way, questioning me about why I was vising Israel, why I was studying in Cairo, and why I was a religious Muslim but didn't look it... for two hours.

All in all it was a very rewarding and fun experience... but a long one. It took us a total of nearly six hours to cross the border, when it usually only takes people two to three hours. By the time we got out (the last ones to leave the border), all the buses / taxis were gone... except for one taxi who had a field day with us. Nice guy, but boy was it not cheap.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to catch a nap before getting up to pray Eid prayer behind the Dome of the Rock... :P

Eid Mubarak!

Almost always do I feel lost, and I wander the earth, questioning whether I belong.. Sometimes I yearn the feeling of belonging, other times I wonder if I want to belong at all. Is this the place for me? Am I better off seeing it all in the distance, hiding in the shadows, where I am most familiar? I continue to wander these remaining days with too many questions and never enough answers. Maybe I'm better off this way and the naivety of it all should put me at ease.

Class 041, Oral English: Nanning Teachers College

I left yesterday's session frustrated with myself and questioning why I try so hard. I am really struggling with a variety of poses for an entire session. I study ideas, but go blank at times and don't know how to direct the subject. However, sometimes, keeping things simple makes for a nice image.

I shot this with a 4x6 softbox less than a foot away from the subject, along with a white reflector for fill. That's it. I did spend extra time on my post processing / Photoshop skills, which I am also trying to further develop.

BOGART: "Umm... Scout, is it unusual for Christmas presents in Australia to move by themselves on Christmas Day?"

SCOUT: "Move, Bogart?" *Questioning.*

ROSIE: "Bogart is right! There is a present box that is moving!" *Alarmed.*

ORSON: "And giggling too!" *More alarmed.*

PADDY: "Giggling?" *Most alarmed.*

DUCKIE: "Hoorah! Finally, a box of worms and grubs for me!"

PADDY, SCOUT, COUSIN PADDINGTON, BOGART, JAGO, DAISY-MAUD, ROSIE, ORSON, BERTIE, CORNELIA, DANNY BOY, ALGIE, FREDDY and PRINCE MAURICE: "Grubs and worms! Yuck!" *Stick out cute little pink bear, fox and mouse tongues.*

DADDY: "Well the present is for all of us, Duckie, so I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it might be something else other than grubs and worms that moves inside this box."

DUCKIE: "Oh pooh!"

DADDY: "Let me take the lid off the box."

Paddy, Scout (and Dolly), Cousin Paddington, Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson, Danny Boy, Algie, Rosie, Bertie, Cornelia, Freddy Duckie, Prince Maurice and I and I would like to wish all our flickr friends and viewers the very best for the festive season. Thank you for all the interest you have shown in our photographs and adventures this year, and all the support and encouragement you have shown. We really do appreciate it.

May you have a wonderful Christmas; safe, and filled with happiness and love whomever you spend it with and whatever you may do.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a long while. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.

Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Daisy-Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.

Orson, named after the little bear constellation, was made by the same friend who made Jago and Daisy-Maud. He comes ready dressed in 'trousers' made of German mohair accessorised with embroidered braces. His paws are ultra suede and his eyes are glass. He is described as being a little bit serious minded but very friendly. He's fine once he gets to know you.

Danny Boy, made by the same friend who made Jago, Daisy-Maud and Orson, has a touch of the 'Oirish' in him with his emerald green scarf. He has an open mouth as he likes to sing and comes with his own songbook, "Irish Airs for Teddy Bears". He has a wobbly head to give him animation when he's talking to you, and is made of English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. Quite a happy-go-lucky little character....

Algie is made by the same friend in England who made Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson and Danny Boy. He is made of sparse English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. A very adventurous little boy, he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind.

Cornelia, I found in an antique and vintage market quite recently. She is a vintage edition Russ Bear from their Mohair Collection. She is made of deliberately mottled mohair to give her that vintage look. One of a limited edition of 10,000, she was designed by artist Carol Hosfstad and is completely handmade.

Bertie came to live with me on Christmas Day 2022. He was a gift from a very dear friend. He is vintage and is hand knitted with soft red dioxide wool and has chocolate brown felt pads on his paws. He has shiny black bead eyes and has his own very smart tartan bow. He tells me that he was living in an antique shop for quite a while, just looking for his forever home, which now he feels that he has. Bertie is very soft and loves cuddles, and whilst perhaps not as forthcoming as some of my other bears due to his shyness, he is very loving and caring and gives big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses beautifully.

Freddy Fox is made by Merrythought in England. I bought him, of all places, from a men’s accessory shop in Melbourne’s Block Arcade, called Mr. Wares. Freddy Fox is made of English Mohair with felt paws and glass bead eyes. He has so much charm and charisma that already he is winning hearts with anyone whom he meets, and he is kind and sweet, which makes him an ideal member of our family.

Prince Maurice is a Maileg mouse, given to me as a birthday gift by my two goddaughters. Maileg (pronounced My’lye) is a brand of charming Danish-designed toys created to inspire children’s favorite playtime stories. By bringing storybook whimsy to everyday moments, Maileg toys help children (large ones and small) explore the pure and simple wonder of imagination. Beloved for their heartwarming personalities, Maileg toys show playfulness and charm in every last detail. Theirs is a timeless world filled with beautiful accessories and settings.

Duckie I saw when I was at a Sunday market on a stall of homemade knitted and crocheted items. She caught my eye straight away with her happy, smiley face and bright colours. I think she finds life with my bears intriguing and perhaps a little confusing, however she is learning.

"Questioning the Magic Donkey..." Gotta love the Flickr teams' sense of humor. This was the message I received as I was waiting for the Uploader to load. Too funny!

Admittedly, this is a fallback shot, having run short on time last night, but I did like the halo around the flame, as well as the appearance of the candle floating in darkness.

Thank you for stopping by, looking and commenting. I'll be wading into your 'stream as well.

Here, enjoy three select readings from The Dunwich Horror:

There was a pandemonium of questioning, and only Henry Wheeler thought to rescue the fallen telescope and wipe it clean of mud. Curtis was past all coherence, and even isolated replies were almost too much for him.

'Bigger'n a barn... all made o' squirmin' ropes... hull thing sort o' shaped like a hen's egg bigger'n anything with dozens o' legs like hogs-heads that haff shut up when they step... nothin' solid abaout it - all like jelly, an' made o' sep'rit wrigglin' ropes pushed clost together... great bulgin' eyes all over it... ten or twenty maouths or trunks a-stickin' aout all along the sides, big as stove-pipes an all a-tossin' an openin' an' shuttin'... all grey, with kinder blue or purple rings... an' Gawd it Heaven - that haff face on top...'

This final memory, whatever it was, proved too much for poor Curtis; and he collapsed completely before he could say more.

'The thing has gone for ever,' Armitage said. 'It has been split up into what it was originally made of, and can never exist again. It was an impossibility in a normal world. Only the least fraction was really matter in any sense we know. It was like its father - and most of it has gone back to him in some vague realm or dimension outside our material universe; some vague abyss out of which only the most accursed rites of human blasphemy could ever have called him for a moment on the hills.'

There was a brief silence, and in that pause the scattered senses of poor Curtis Whateley began to knit back into a sort of continuity; so that he put his hands to his head with a moan. Memory seemed to pick itself up where it had left off, and the horror of the sight that had prostrated him burst in upon him again.

'Oh, oh, my Gawd, that haff face - that haff face on top of it... that face with the red eyes an' crinkly albino hair, an' no chin, like the Whateleys... It was a octopus, centipede, spider kind o' thing, but they was a haff-shaped man's face on top of it, an' it looked like Wizard Whateley's, only it was yards an' yards acrost....'

Armitage chose his words very carefully.

'It was - well, it was mostly a kind of force that doesn't belong in our part of space; a kind of force that acts and grows and shapes itself by other laws than those of our sort of Nature. We have no business calling in such things from outside, and only very wicked people and very wicked cults ever try to. There was some of it in Wilbur Whateley himself - enough to make a devil and a precocious monster of him, and to make his passing out a pretty terrible sight. I'm going to burn his accursed diary, and if you men are wise you'll dynamite that altar-stone up there, and pull down all the rings of standing stones on the other hills. Things like that brought down the beings those Whateleys were so fond of - the beings they were going to let in tangibly to wipe out the human race and drag the earth off to some nameless place for some nameless purpose.

'But as to this thing we've just sent back - the Whateleys raised it for a terrible part in the doings that were to come. It grew fast and big from the same reason that Wilbur grew fast and big - but it beat him because it had a greater share of the outsideness in it. You needn't ask how Wilbur called it out of the air. He didn't call it out. It was his twin brother, but it looked more like the father than he did.'
