Part of a quantum optics free-space laser setup. The only light stems from a green laser, this photo is therefore monochromatic in the most strict sense possible. easily visible is the so-called 'speckle pattern' that is produced by the interference of different light paths. In ordinary light such patterns are not visible because the light sources are not coherent enough (that is, maintain their relative wave phase over long enough time scales and lengths).

DVLA have the engine size as 1296cc and the colour as blue.
Last MoT test expired in September 2013.

"Chassis number: VS6BXXWPFBEG96347. This Quantum MK 2 is based on a Ford Fiesta XR2 and fitted with an XR3 1,800cc Zetec twin‑cam engine. The car had been off the road for a few years prior to the vendor's purchase in 2018 when it required finishing and has recently been subject to many new parts. These include an Omex ECU unit, mapped and set‑up, cam‑belt with full kit, starter motor, alternator, radiator, fan, battery, electric fuel pump, special filter unit and clutch kit. The engine and gearbox have been checked over and the front end suspension and steering have been rebuilt. New discs and pads have been fitted. It also benefits from Recaro seats, new roof lining, carpets and side panels. The previous owner had completely stripped the car when subject to a professional respray. The vendor advises that much money has been spent and he is only selling due to health reasons. It comes with various receipts, build manual, instructions and spare keys. The mileage is recorded at 71,499."

(i.e. one second = 25 minutes).
One battery of the 40D was able to last just over 12 hours on a full charge, which was quite good! Mounting the camera backwards on my tripod allowed me to (very carefully) change the battery during the timelapse period. All images were shot as large JPEG, rather than RAW, to ensure I could get them (1435 images) on a single 8Gb card. Using a desk lamp I was able to continue shoot throughout the night for the whole period.
In the same time the Earth rotated once, travelling 1,608,000 miles through the solar system. 357,055 people were born. The Athabasca glacier in Canada moved about 2-3cm. A humming bird beat its wings about 2,160,000 times and there were 50 Million Tweets on Twitter. The Universe barely even registered a change.

A lotus blossoms in the monsoon. The bright yellow heart of the flower is surrounded by petals drenched in the rain. There are very few bright things which survive a monsoon such as this year's.

D-Wave’s quantum annealing paper came out in Nature today (here's a plain English summary).
“Fabricated using standard integrated circuit processes, the processors tested contained 128 superconducting flux qubits and 24,000 devices known as Josephson junctions, making them among the most complex superconducting circuits ever built. Designed to solve optimization and sampling problems, the processors have been successfully used in a variety of tasks including financial risk analysis, bioinformatics, affinity mapping and sentiment analysis, object recognition in images, medical imaging classification and compressed sensing.”
It also makes a wicked machine learning coprocessor, as shown by Google.

Quantum is a British kit car manufacturer founded in 1987. Most of it cars are based on Ford Fiesta donor vehicles. This Saloon model, built in the early 1990s, uses the Mark 2 Fiesta as can be seen in several parts. Some 200 Saloons have been built. This one is powered by a 1.6 litre engine with 97 PS.

Today I was reading a 1994 paper by physicist Don N. Page on what he calls Sensible Quantum Mechanics. Specifically, he was speculating on how to experimentally determine if there is Information Loss in Black Holes and/or Conscious Beings?.
The equation I've put at the top, taken from Page's paper, is the Poincaré recurrence time for one particular model of the universe; how long it would take for everything to repeat is on the order of a googolplex years. Roughly speaking!
I was already working on this image with two self-portraits cropped from PANO-sabotages, then I layered in two other PANO-sabotages, one of circles (from a graphics source book) and one of a Rubik's cube on a book shelf that includes the classic Gödel, Escher, Bach. I think it adequately expresses my mood after considering loss of information in conscious beings!
