We also toured the observatory and an attached museum full of clocks, telescopes, and quadrants such as this giant device made for Sir Edmond Halley (of Halley's Comet fame). The museum is very good at explaining why longitudinal science was so important and how hard it was to sync up astronomical observations with mechanical time keeping on the ocean.
