Seems to be that time of year. Turnberry Hotel is a very bright blot on the landscape now.

On a side path at the MIT campus. At just the right angle, everything comes together...!
I really love taking opportunistic photos, and the Voskhod, being a simple, compact fixed lens viewfinder camera, really helps deliver without overcomplicating a scene. Geometry and textures drive my shots, and the best examples of urban geometry are found, in my opinion, when simply looking around.
In this case though, I've been by this path many times over the past 7 years, yet the building in the bottom left - I believe it is a dorm - has only just recently been built. Thankfully in just the right position for this!

Sunrise is the instant at which the upper edge of the Sun appears above the horizon in the east. Sunrise should not be confused with dawn, which is the (variously defined) point at which the sky begins to lighten, some time before the sun itself appears, ending twilight. Because atmospheric refraction causes the sun to be seen while it is still below the horizon, both sunrise and sunset are, from one point of view, optical illusions. The sun also exhibits an optical illusion at sunrise similar to the moon illusion.
The apparent westward revolution of Sun around the earth after rising out of the horizon is due to the Earth's eastward rotation, a counter-clockwise revolution when viewed from above the North Pole. This illusion is so convincing that most cultures had mythologies and religions built around the geocentric model. This same effect can be seen with near-polar satellites as well.
Sunrise and sunset are calculated from the leading and trailing edges of the Sun, and not the center; this slightly increases the duration of "day" relative to "night". The sunrise equation, however, is based on the center of the sun.
The timing of sunrises vary throughout the year, as determined by the viewer's longitude and latitude, altitude, the time of year, and time zone of the viewer's location. Small daily changes and noticeable semi-annual changes in the timing of sunrises are driven by the axial tilt of Earth, daily rotation of the earth, the planet's movement in its annual elliptical orbit around the Sun, and the earth and moon's paired revolutions around each other. In the summertime, the days get longer and sunrises occur earlier every day until the day of the earliest sunrise, which occurs before the summer solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, the earliest sunrise does not fall on the summer solstice around June 21, but occurs earlier in June. The precise date of the earliest sunrise depends on the viewer's latitude (connected with the slower Earth's movement around the aphelion around July 4). Similarly, the latest sunrise does not occur on the winter solstice, but rather about two weeks later, again depending the viewer's latitude. In the Northern Hemisphere the latest sunrise occurs in early January (influence from the Earth's faster movement near the perihelion which occurs around January 3). Likewise, the same phenomena exist in the Southern Hemisphere except with the respective dates reversed, with the latest sunrises occurring some time after June 21 in winter and earliest sunrises occurring some time before December 21 in summer, again depending on one's southern latitude. For one or two weeks surrounding both solstices, both sunrise and sunset get slightly later or earlier each day. Even on the equator, sunrise and sunset shift several minutes back and forth through the year, along with solar noon. These effects are plotted by an analemma.[1][2]
Due to Earth's axial tilt, whenever and wherever sunrise occurs, it is always in the northeast quadrant from the March equinox to the September equinox and in the southeast quadrant from the September equinox to the March equinox. Sunrises occur due east on the March and September equinoxes for all viewers on Earth.
As sunrise and sunset are calculated from the leading and trailing edges of the sun, and not the centre, the duration of "day" is slightly longer than "night". Further, because the light from the sun is bent by the atmospheric refraction, the sun is still visible after it is geometrically below the horizon. The sun also appears larger on the horizon, which is another optical illusion, similar to the moon illusion.

Just a portion of Ramona Falls in the Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon. I love waterfalls and have seen many, but this has to be one of the prettiest as it comes trickling down a sheer cliff face finding its way amongst the many rocks.
Unlike last year’s submissions, when I challenged myself to triple alliterations and puns, this year I simply tried to make a quadrant kaleidoscopes out of each picture from last year. It worked for all but 2 of last year’s photos, so I found 2 new subjects.
This photo is one of these 2 subjects where I used a a new object.
Washington Square, originally designated in 1682 as Southeast Square, is a 6.4 acres (2.6 ha) open-space park in Center City Philadelphia's southeast quadrant and one of the five original planned squares laid out on the city grid by William Penn's surveyor, Thomas Holme. It is part of both the Washington Square West and Society Hill neighborhoods. In 2005, the National Park Service took over ownership and management of Washington Square, through an easement from the City of Philadelphia. It is now part of Independence National Historical Park. During the 18th century, the Square was used to graze animals and for burials by the city's African American community and as a potter's field, much like the park of the same name in New York's Greenwich Village. During the Revolutionary War, the square was used as a burial ground for citizens and troops from the Colonial army. After the Revolution, victims of the city's yellow fever epidemics were interred here, and the square was used for cattle markets and camp meetings. Improvement efforts began in 1815, as the neighborhoods around the square were developed and became fashionable. In 1825, the park was named Washington Square in tribute to George Washington and a monument to Washington was proposed. This monument was never built but served as the seed for the eventual tribute to soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Washington Square included an area called Lawyer's Row at 6th and Walnut, on the site of the former Walnut Street Prison. The square was also home to the city's publishing industry, including the Curtis Publishing Company, J. B. Lippincott, W. B. Saunders, Lea & Febiger, the Farm Journal, and George T. Bisel Co., law publishers, now the sole remaining publishing house on the Square, with Franklin Jon Zuch serving as president since 1992. It has been located there since 1876 and still owned by the Bisel family. Washington Square was the site of the first human flight in the Americas in 1793 when Jean Pierre Blanchard ascended in his hot-air balloon from the Walnut Street Prison.

yeah yeah yeah my first foto fanzine is here! it's a black and white resoprint with 20 pages. the resoprint makes it look very old school and analog in a way (it's almost like screen printig) quadrant is a limited edition of 100 pieces.
all pictures were taken in zurich switzerland. most of them with film cameras, only some digital. the size of the fanzine is about A5. each one ist numbered by hand by myself :-). if you're interested in having one, send me a message, you can get it for 5 swiss francs (it's about 4.5 Euros) plus shipping. i'm so proud, it was so much fun and i'm sure there will be more fanzines in the future...

Benjamin Franklin Parkway is a scenic boulevard that runs through the cultural heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Named for favorite son Benjamin Franklin, the mile-long Parkway cuts diagonally across the grid plan pattern of Center City's Northwest quadrant. It starts at Philadelphia City Hall, curves around Logan Circle, and ends before the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
