The Creation of Pandora

Louis Laguerre (Paris 1663 - London 1721) 1718/20

Replaces a previous ceiling painting destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1714.

Pandora appears in the centre in a white dress surrounded by gods and goddesses offering her gifts.

Zeus/Jupiter hands Pandora the notorious sealed jar containing all the evils of the world and Hope. Juno/Hera has her peacock. Vulcan

/Hephaestus her creator, kneels beside her and offers her a gold coronet. Minerva/Athena is adjusting Pandora's dress, Bacchus/Dionysus presents a goblet of wine, which has just been filled by Ganymede who sits above him holding an ornate pitcher of wine; Ceres/Demeter presents an ear of corn, and a seated Silenus, attended by satyrs and nymphs are bearing her baskets of grapes. Beneath Pandora on two dark clouds are Hercules/Heracles with his club and Pan playing his pipes. Mars offers her his sword, and above him Venus, attended by the Graces, reclines on a cloud on which lies her blue mantle, and offers her cestus. Neptune offers coral from the sea and Cybele wearing a crown of towers is seated in a chariot drawn by lions holds a key in her left hand and raises her right hand in despair. Others in attendance are Apollo with his lyre attended by the Muses; Saturn with a sickle and hour-glass; Diana with her bow. Above Pandora, Flora crowns her with a garland of roses and Mercury/Hermes with his caduceus in his right hand, hovers in the air ready to take Pandora to Epimetheus the brother of Prometheus.

Pandora: the name of the first woman on earth. Prometheus created Man by moulding figures out of clay, Athena then breathed life into them. Because of the faults of mortal men Zeus determined to destroy them. He deprived men of fire but Prometheus stole it from Olympus by secretly taking it in the stalk of a fennel plant, and returned it to them. Zeus in revenge caused Vulcan to make the first woman, Pandora, who, by her charms and beauty would bring misery upon the human race. All the gods then bestowed her with gifts to assist her in bringing about the ruin of mankind. Zeus presented her with a sealed jar containing all the evils that were ever to plague mankind. The only good it contained was Hope who was at the bottom. Pandora was delivered by Mercury to Epimetheus who had been warned by his brother Prometheus not to accept gifts from the gods. Epimetheus married Pandora. Pandora having been told not open the jar, did so and released into the world a plague of evils - the last to leave was Hope. Pandora bore Epimetheus a daughter, Pyrrha, who married Deucalion and, with him, survived the Great Flood.

Some post-Homeric sources claim that in order to keep Achilles safe from the war, Thetis (or, in some versions, Peleus) hides the young man at the court of Lycomedes, king of Skyros. There, Achilles is disguised as a girl and lives among Lycomedes' daughters, perhaps under the name "Pyrrha" (the red-haired girl). With Lycomedes' daughter Deidamia, whom in the account of Statius he rapes, Achilles there fathers a son, Neoptolemus (also called Pyrrhus, after his father's possible alias). According to this story, Odysseus learns from the prophet Calchas that the Achaeans would be unable to capture Troy without Achilles' aid. Odysseus goes to Skyros in the guise of a peddler selling women's clothes and jewelry and places a shield and spear among his goods. When Achilles instantly takes up the spear, Odysseus sees through his disguise and convinces him to join the Greek campaign. In another version of the story, Odysseus arranges for a trumpet alarm to be sounded while he was with Lycomedes' women; while the women flee in panic, Achilles prepares to defend the court, thus giving his identity away.

Habitat: sandy sea shore, among grasses and other tall herbs; locally flat terrain; open, sunny, dry place; precipitations ~ 900 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, elevations 6 m (20 feet), Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region.

Substratum: sandy soil.

Place: Adriatic Sea region, island Susak, sea shore about 200 m north of the harbor, Kvarner archipelago, Rijeka region, Croatia.

Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Orobanche minor): Orobanche minor was a few hundred years ago a Mediterranean species. However, it was spread by men by agricultural trade almost all over the world. Today it can be found in the almost whole Europe, in Africa, Asia, America and New Zeeland. Although widely distributed, it is quite a rare plant. The possible exception is monoculture agricultural land where its hosts grow e.g. clover fields, where it can appear massively and can completely destroy the harvest.

This find is from island Susak in Adriatic Sea having a unique geology. The island is the only one among hundreds of islands along east shore of Adriatic Sea, consisting 100% from sand.

Orobanche species are very variable. Proper determination is not always an easy task. In addition, their appearance depends on their actual host. This heavily pertains to Orobanche minor since its hosts are many: several species of Trifolium, other Fabaceae as well as Asteraceae. However, the combination of traits of the plants shown here speak in favor of Orobanche minor: small to medium size plants with densely glandular pubescence, small flowers (compared to other similar species), tubular, only slightly inflated at the end, corolla with conspicuous violet veins near the upper lip, almost glabrous style with dark purple-brown two-lobed stigma, entire calix segments and long bracts.

Chapter 1 - Tempted By Fate?

I ain't much of a believer in fate. But a man can find meaning in unexpected places. Aiin't never found the meaning of life sittin' and listening to the preacher man neither. What I'm talkin' about ain't inside some book or in Ol' Roy's tonic. You have to find it. And sometimes it finds you.

It wasn't supposed to be this way. After the unicycle accident, I was on hard times. The circus trucks left a long time ago. The Ménière's disease still had my number and they ain't got much use for a clown that can't balance. Sometimes you gotta fall down a few times (literally) before it all makes sense (literally).

Her name was Pyrrha, but I called her Cherry Valence cuz she had the sweet scent of the cherry mills I worked in as a kid. She didn't seem to mind. Some time later, a sailor over near Googlé told me it means "red". And that's Pyrrha fer sure. Red hair, red lips, red arms and a sexy stare that could stop you cold. I ain't never seem anything like her. She licked good. M-M good. And that was just the beginning.

to be continued...

The Buontalenti Grotto in the Boboli Gardens is a fascinating place, where you feel as though you’re in a fairy tale. The Grotta di Buontalenti (also known as Grotta Grande or the Big Grotto) was built by Bernardo Buontalenti between 1583 and 1593, commissioned by Francesco I de’ Medici.

Buontalenti Grotto in Boboli Gardens, Florence

In sixteenth-century Tuscany, enriching noble villas and palaces with gorgeous gardens was a widespread fashion, and grottoes were one of their essential elements.

Artists appointed by important Italian families built the decorative grottoes, reconstructing natural caves, often using real limestone concretions removed from actual caves.

Grottoes were decorated with fountains, sculptures, and frescoes, often inspired by fantastic themes with references to the world of alchemy.

In the Buontalenti Grotto, you can also find a number of magical, fabulous, and allegorical elements, as well as symbols that refer to esoteric subjects with subtle reminders.

The exterior of the cave announces its interior—bizarre and surprising. The entrance, with stalagmites and stalactites, is flanked by two niches with the statues of Ceres and Apollo by Baccio Bandinelli. The coat of arms of the Medici family stands at the center of the upper band, along with plaques featuring zodiacal signs.

Buontalenti Grotto, a masterpiece of Florentine Mannerist style, consists of three rooms arranged in succession.

The first chamber is dedicated to nature and metamorphosis.

Rocks, hollows, and stalactites evoke the atmosphere of a natural cave, but if you look carefully you realize that they depict sheep, goats, and shepherds playing their pipes. Wall and ceiling frescoes by Bernardino Poccetti depicting fantastic animals complete the surreal atmosphere.

In the corners, you can find copies of the famous Michelangelo’s Prigioni (Prisoners). These four sculptures (the originals are currently kept at the Galleria dell’Accademia) are four figures carved in stone, yet sketched, and which support the roof of the cave.

The Prisoners represent the transforming power of nature and recall the ancient myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha, described in Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

The power to transform is also a typical power of alchemy, the discipline able to turn lead into gold. Raw elements become precious material through spiritual refinement.

In previous centuries, the light that filtered in through a skylight on the ceiling used to create optical illusions on the walls, reflecting the shadows of the flowing water and fishes that were once there.

Alchemists considered water as the first matter and used to refer to it as “burning water” or “mercurial water.”

Buontalenti Grotto’s second chamber is square, and its walls are decorated with scenes from the Trojan War. The square space symbolizes the four elements: air, water, earth, and fire.

Sculptures depicting Paris and Helen by Vincenzo de’ Rossi joined in a fatal embrace stand in the center of the room.

In the language of alchemy, Paris represents sulfur. The siege of Troy is instead an allegory of the elixir: sulfur dissolved during this operation and was transformed into mercurial water, the first matter.

The third and last chamber is oval in shape, symbolizing the philosophical egg in which all transformations take place. Decorated with wall fountains, this chamber features at the center the Bathing Venus sculpted by Giambologna, which depicts universal love and the life-giving power of nature.

The thesis that underlies the entire representation is that in order to contemplate the infinite, one has to unify pleasure and virtue, senses and feelings. Only under the guidance of love can you totally understand the divine.

In the Gardens of Boboli are two other fantastic caverns in addition to the Buontalenti Cave: the Grotto of Madama, also made by Buontalenti, and the nineteenth-century Cave of Adam and Eve.

Because of its enchanted atmosphere, Buontalenti Grotto was chosen by Dan Brown for one of the most dramatic scenes in his Inferno.
