PUSHKAR LAKE
According to Hindu scriptures, the sacred Pushkar Lake is described as “Tirtha Raj”, the king of all pilgrimage sites. Legend has it that this lake was consecrated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe when a lotus dropped from his hand into the vale and a lake emerged in that place. No pilgrimage is considered to be complete without a dip in in the holy Pushkar Lake. Semi-circular in shape and about 8-10 m deep, Pushkar Lake is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats (a series of steps leading to the lake), where pilgrims throng in large numbers to take a sacred bath, and over 400 temples. Most of these temples and ghats in Pushkar are from the 18th century and later, because many temples were destroyed during Muslim conquests in the area (11th – 13th century). Subsequently, the destroyed temples were rebuilt.
Pushkar is a town in the Ajmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is situated about 10 km (6.2 mi) northwest of Ajmer and about 150 kilometres (93 mi) southwest of Jaipur. It is a pilgrimage site for Hindus and Sikhs. Pushkar has many temples. Most of the temples and ghats in Pushkar are from the 18th century and later, because many temples were destroyed during Muslim conquests in the area. Subsequently, the destroyed temples were rebuilt. The most famous among Pushkar temples is the red spired Brahma Temple built during the 14th century CE. Pushkar is located on the shore of Pushkar Lake, considered sacred by the Hindus particularly in Shaktism. The Pushkar lake has many ghats where pilgrims bathe. Pushkar is also significant for its Gurdwaras for Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. One of the bathing ghats is called Gobind ghat built by the Marathas in the memory of Guru Gobind Singh.
Pushkar is famous for its annual fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) featuring a trading fete of cattle, horses and camels. It is held over seven days in autumn marking Kartika Purnima according to the Hindu calendar (Kartik (month), October or November). It attracts nearly 200,000 people. In 1998, Pushkar hosted about 1 million domestic (95%) and international tourists over the year.

Pilgrims gearing up for Kartik Purnima in Pushkar. Kartik Purnima is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the full moon day or the fifteenth lunar day of Kartik (this year it fell on November 28, 2012). In Rajasthan, the Pushkar mela commences on Prabodhini Ekadashi and continues until the Kartik Purnima, when pilgrims gather in large numbers to take a sacred bath in Pushkar Lake.
Pushkar is an amazing place to visit - warning they will target you for charity money.
WARNING 1
- When you are divded by 'monks' they will tell you a bit about their history, they will then ask you about your family members and then say a blessing.
- After saying the blessing, they will count each family member and then demand charity money for each person.
- IF you are giving charity, they will only take EURO, GBP, American Dollar (it seems)
They will often surprise you with language abilities - in my experience, ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, SPANISH was popular.
CHINESE and Korean didn't work for them!

Local children will come and talk to you but this will cost you. be warned.
Puskhar is supposed to sit at the edge of a dessert but the area turns suprisingly green after some monsune rainfall.
This happened in June 2001 on Nath Ghat at Pushkar Lake.
I was walking home late (10pm) one night and passed a sadhu walking in the opposite direction to me. I (unwisely) greeted him Sita Ram and kept walking.
the sadhu then starts calling to me 'Are you Hindu madam?' (Obviously, I am not.)
I ignored him and kept walking but when i reached a dark corner the sadhu ran back and grabbed my arm. Making disgusting kissing noises, he tired to pull me down onto the ghat.
At first i resisted and stared saying No Baba, what are you doing but he insistently kept pulling on my arm and i realised that he wasn't going to let me go.
Since there was nothing left to do, I landed a perfect punch right on his jaw which gave him such a fright that he let go of my arm and ran away accompanied by my shouts.
