The Pushkar Fair, or Kartik Mela, is a multi-day livestock fair and cultural fête. Animal breeders and buyers descend on the small Northern Indian town of Pushkar, and for five days they display and trade their camels, horses, cows, goats, and sheep. The camels take centre stage: they are everywhere, in all their decorated, bad-tempered glory.

Pushkar lake is considered holy and people bathe in the ghats (steps) despite the chilly winter temperatures. Unlike Varanasi, it's forbidden to take photos along the lakeshore. These were taken from the rooftop of Pushkar Cafe Hotel. Consumption of meat, alcohol and eggs is also forbidden in the city, I only violated one of those regulations.

The Pushkar Fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) or locally Pushkar ka Mela is an annual five-day camel and livestock fair held in the town of Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs. Apart from the buying and selling of livestock, it has become an important tourist attraction. Competitions such as the "matka phod", "longest moustache", and "bridal competition" are the main draws for this fair which attracts thousands of tourists.
Thousands of people go to the banks of the Pushkar Lake where the fair takes place. Men buy and sell their livestock, which includes camels, cows, sheep and goats. The women go to the stalls, full of bracelets, clothes, textiles and fabrics. A camel race starts off the festival, with music, songs and exhibitions to follow. Between these events, the most waited for is the test of how the camel is able to bring the items. In order to demonstrate, the men go up on the group of camels one after another.
It is celebrated for five days from the Kartik ekadashi to Kartik Poornima, the full moon day (the 15th) of Kartik (October–November) in Hindu calendar. The full moon day is the main day and the day, according to legend, when the Hindu god Brahma sprung up the Pushkar Lake, thus numerous people swim in its sacred waters.
Pushkar is a holy town in the state of Rajasthan famous for the Pushkar lake, various ghats and temples spread all around the lake.
The word 'Pushkar' means lotus flower, which is said to be the seat of Brahma, one of the Hindu holy trinity, who is worshipped as the creator of this world. The legend has it that the demon Vajra Nabha killed Brahma's children, he in turn struck him with his weapon, a lotus flower. Vajra Nabha died with the impact, and the petals of the lotus fell at three places. One of them is Pushkar, where it gave birth to a lake. Brahma is supposed to have performed sacrifice at this lake on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartik month (generally in the month of November)), hallowing the place. - wikitravel.org

The annual Pushkar mela (fair) has now officially started and will last for about a week. This is the time when the small holy town, set at the edge of the desert in the Western State of Rajasthan sees its population grow to hundreds of thousands within days. The camel and cattle fair also attracts pilgrims who come to visit the bathe in the holy Pushkar lake for the Kartik Purnima (full moon).

Well a shot I have always wanted to click !!! Doesn't it look like paradise ! Finally I got my chance last December in Pushkar ! Apologies for the loss in sharpness as the camels moved during the 30 second exposure :-X but I still love the shot.. A similar shot has already been put earlier on my stream and after repeated suggestions I decided to put this one up also !
