The Pushkar Fair or locally Pushkar ka Mela is an annual five-day camel and livestock fair held in the town of Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs.
Pushkar (पुष्कर) in Rajasthan is one of the oldest cities of India. The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation. It is mentioned that Brahma performed penance here for 60,000 years to have glimpse of Radha Krishna. Pushkar boasts of temples, though not many can be considered very old since many were destroyed by Aurangzeb, a Mogul ruler and subsequently rebuilt. The most famous among all is the Brahma Temple, said to be the only temple in the world dedicated to this deity.
Pushkar is famous for its annual Pushkar Cattle Fair, which has over the years become one of the biggest tourist attractions in India. This is usually the quintessential colourful Indian festival which you see in all the Incredible !ndia ads. However, this year was not as joyous for the traders. The global recession combined with the drought hit hard and there were hardly any buyers. The individual stories are sad - with most traders having to leave their cows, camels and horses behind because they can't afford to feed their families, let alone the animals. Yet, the resilience of the people was touching to see - with hope for the future and welcoming to those from the outside.

View On Black .. Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principal temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters....Pushkar (Hindi: पुष्कर) is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India.
Pushkar means born due to a flower. In Hindu mythology it is said that the gods released a swan with a lotus in its beak and let it fall on earth where Brahma would perform a grand yagna. The place where the lotus fell was called Pushkar. It is situated at 14 Km North West from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus.)
A camel trader at Pushkar camel fair looks disapprovingly at the bargain going on in the neighbouring tent. Early mornings and evenings are the busiest time at the fair, where annually more than a hundred thousand camels and equal number of other cattle change hands. Morning is occuppied by cleaning, cooking, grooming and preparing the camel. Bidding activities start early and goes on till sunset. The fair ground gets busy once again, cooking, cleaning, gossiping and preparing for the night, spent in the open, not always under even a tent.
Pushkar lake is considered holy and people bathe in the ghats (steps) despite the chilly winter temperatures. Unlike Varanasi, it's forbidden to take photos along the lakeshore. These were taken from the rooftop of Pushkar Cafe Hotel. Consumption of meat, alcohol and eggs is also forbidden in the city, I only violated one of those regulations.

The Pushkar Fair, or Kartik Mela, is a multi-day livestock fair and cultural fête. Animal breeders and buyers descend on the small Northern Indian town of Pushkar, and for five days they display and trade their camels, horses, cows, goats, and sheep. The atmosphere is festive - with ferris wheels and hot air balloons.
