Pushkar is a haloed land for it has one of the only temples dedicated to worshiping one of the trimuvirate of the original Gods of the Vedic times. Pushkar means Flower by the Hand of Brahama and it is the lake that is supposed to have been formed because of a piece of flower that flew out of his hands when he overcame some demon in the mythology of the Vedic fables.
Devout Hindus visit Pushkar for various sanctimonious rights and to pay obeisance to Brahma.
A whole lot of people gather here in November to take part in the annual cattle fair which is supposed to be the largest gathering in the world. It is a terrific experience. Heat, dust, sand, buyers and sellers, photographers and visitors, it is a virtual fair. A stampede of activity.
Notes on Photography -
The light is never going to be good in Pushkar in the day time. The dust raised by the animals and the activity of the human beings casts a regular haze in the air. There are no rains at this time of the year to clear the weather either. so one has to throw the rulebook out and shoot at what ever time the light and activity go together. This was shot hand held at f / 11 to take in some of the background details and it comes through alright. The haze is quite palpable and there were fungus/dust streaks on the camera sensor so the sky is kind of little muted as it has been salvaged a bit.

Pushkar is one of the oldest cities in India. It is Located northwest of Ajmer, the halcyon city of Pushkar is a favored destination for thousands of tourists and devotees congregate to Rajasthan.

A camel herder guides his camel through the deserts which marks the venue for world renown Pushkar Fair, which attracts not just thousands of camels and horses but also photographers from across the globe. Finding a frame which stands out from rest could be one of the biggest challenges, but at times things do fall in place for good.

Held every year around November, the Pushakr Fair is actually a religious festival connected to the Brahma Mandir in this small sleepy town in District Ajmer, Rajasthan. Since the festival attracts a large gathering of religious devotees and other visitors, traditionally a cattle fair is also held in the fields adjacent to the Temple. about 100,000 camels, horses and other cattle and bought and sold in the fair over five days around the Full Moon of Hindu Calendar month of Karthik. Probably more interesting than the camels well groomed and decorated are the local camel sellers who also dress up in their colourful best.
It’s not just a camel fair: According to Hindu scriptures, the sacred Pushkar Lake is described as 'Tirtha Raj', the king of all pilgrimage sites. Hindus consider a journey to Pushkar to be the ultimate pilgrimage that must be undertaken to attain salvation. No pilgrimage is considered complete without a dip in in the holy lake. Pushkar Lake is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats (stairs leading to the water) and over 400 temples. The ghats at the left are filled with bathers taking part in a ritual holy dip.
