Years ago I had stopped along side the road to glass the area.
After sitting there a few minutes, I realized the snow on the hillside under the willows was moving.
As I looked closer I saw that there was a flock of several hundred Willow Ptarmigan feeding on the willow buds. What gave them away was that dark beak and the black eye.
Everything else on the Ptarmigan blended in perfectly with the snow.
Wanting to get some photos of them I climbed up on top of the roadside berm.
That snow was hard packed and held my weight.
What happened when I jumped down was a big surprise, I sunk in past my waist.
Getting back out proved to be a lot of work.
Good thing was the Ptarmigan kept feeding and I did get some pretty good photos that day.
What we don’t do, to get “the shot!” ;-)

One of our local egret neighbors searches the last remaining areas of a pond that still has water - it was generally a dry summer. However, I am still surprised of its ability to catch fish, even though looking through such murky water!
White Sands National Park covers 145,762 acres (227.8 sq mi; 589.9 sq km) in the Tularosa Basin, including the southern 41% of a 275 sq mi (710 sq km) field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. This gypsum dunefield is the largest of its kind on Earth, with a depth of about 30 feet (9.1 m), dunes as tall as 60 feet (18 m), and about 4.5 billion short tons (4.1 billion metric tons) of gypsum sand.
Approximately 12,000 years ago, the land within the Tularosa Basin featured large lakes, streams, grasslands, and Ice Age mammals. As the climate warmed, rain and snowmelt dissolved gypsum from the surrounding mountains and carried it into the basin. Further warming and drying caused the lakes to evaporate and form selenite crystals. Strong winds then broke up crystals and transported them eastward. A similar process continues to produce gypsum sand today.
The park is located about 15 miles south of Alamogordo, NM, USA. Such a unique place and experience, very surreal.

"Pure White Bloodroot Bloom" by Patti Deters. These small but impactful Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) blossoms are one of the first perennial flowers to bloom in the spring in my Minnesota garden (Zone 4). This little woodland ephemeral is also known as Canada puccoon, bloodwort, redroot, red puccoon, pauson, coon root, and tetterwort. Native Americans used bloodroot and it is supposed to provide some antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory relief - as well as using the crushed roots to create a red dye. Bloodroot's pure white petals and bright golden center stamens help these plants really stand among the woodland leaf litter when they start to bloom. This photo has a vertical orientation. Dear Flickr Friends, I try not to share too many images of my beautiful pooch as it would turn into a private stream of personal images and I'm sure you don't want your photo stream full of my Daisy Dog :) but today is our Daisies 1st Birthday, so I have indulged in three gorgeous images I took of her yesterday, one including her with a new and very big Yaker Bone for which she is very proud and has carried it everywhere, dropping it at our feet with a show of pride and happiness and thanking us with tail wags and kiss licks. Have a fabulous Saturday and now its times to bake some peanut and cheese cookies for my beautiful Daisy :)))))

Lily is simply the most adorable 'cloud on legs' she looks like a seal pup. She weighs less than a kilo but has the personality of a million kilos. She's smart and clever and is already potty trained. I get way too many cuddles and kisses haha. Her tail waggles all day.
We have to be careful as she is sooo tiny, we have to mind our feet and step carefully as she appears suddenly her tail waggling at a million miles an hour.
Daisy adores her, she's felt a bit miffed by it all, but we give treats to Daisy first when treats are handed out, Daisy has had so many cuddles this week telling her she's my big girl although Daisy is only 4kg herself. I'm behind on everything. They've started kissing and nose bumping. They play chase and it seems the Lily is the chaser and Daisy is the runner, hilarious.
