Built by the Melingriffith Tinplate Works in 1807 so that water could be used to power the Tinplate Works before being fed to the adjacent Glamorganshire canal by means of the waterwheel operated pump. After a working life of approximately 140 years it gradually became derelict after the closure of the canal. Restoration work began on the oak & cast iron pump in 1974 and it's now a scheduled ancient monument.
The Melingriffith Works were situated on or near the site of an ancient corn mill and the earliest known record of the iron works is 1749. The tinplate works closed in 1957 and a housing estate now stands in it's place since the late eighties.
