Papplewick Pumping Station, north of Nottingham, supplied drinking water to the city. It pumped water from a 200ft deep well at the rate of 1.5 million gallons a day! That water had to be stored somewhere, and so in 1880 they built this underground reservoir.
The beam engine here pumped water to Northampton from the 1860s to the late 1940s and still existed in 1966. This is the outside of the building on November 11 1966. The site is at Cliftonville, near the top of the hill on land now occupied by the General Hospital parking lot.

The former hydraulic pumping station at Hartley Quay on the east side of Canning Dock dates from the 1870s and has been restored as a pub/restaurant.

This dredge is pumping sand to the north end of Carolina Beach to replenish that lost by erosion. This seems to be an annual fight against nature. I think eventually nature will win.
