During the busy spring season, as well as holidays and nice weekends, the park has so many visitors that parking lots and even pullouts fill up. Parking spots are very difficult to find. We recommend taking the Roadrunner Shuttle Bus into the park.

We stopped at a pullout atop this little ridge next to a road that just seems to disappear, and I felt the urge to go walking. The Bighorns have just that kind of landscape, the kind of rolling, grassy land that makes me want to just set out and walk right into the middle of it. Of course, you can do that here. There are trails in parts of it, but this is the Forest Service, and nobody says you have to take the trail. You can just go wherever, and you can set up a tent in most of it if you want. One of these days, I'd like to do that here. Just park the car at the overlook, grab my tent, and walk a couple of miles into the woods somewhere. I think that would be fun.

This was an awesome day. We left Egilsstadir early for the drive to Myvatn. We passed a number of waterfalls (with no pullouts or names) until we came to Rjukandafoss - a beautiful waterfall with several sections. When hiked as the trail and had some great views. Nice start to the day. Back on the road to cover what is known as the Big Sky Country of Iceland - pretty much a lot of nothing. We were headed for Dettifoss - a major waterfall on my Bucket List. It exceeded expectations. Absolutely stunning visually and auditory - it is massive. I tried some long exposure with a tripod but it felt like the ground was shaking. Heather let me check out another waterfall about a mile away - Selfoss. If Dettifoss wasn't around, this would be a major destination by itself. Very different than Dettifoss but awesome on its own. I stayed for a bit and just ogled everything. Simply wow. I returned to the car and Heather dragged me off to another trail with very cool canyon views. We heard there was a third waterfall very close by so naturally we went. It was amazing. There were about 2-3 other people at Hafragilsfoss. Good God Almighty - this waterfall was spectacular - and the guidebook said this was difficult to reach with a 4x4 and best skipped. I'm glad we ignored this (the road was actually a piece of cake). Side note - the area around here looked like Martian landscape. We were in Heaven! We reluctantly headed to Myvatn - the Icelandic equivalent of Yellowstone. It was nice but we must be jaded since we live so close to Yellowstone. All in all, a very nice day, and I definitely want to go back to Dettifoss and the other falls.

As part of the B.C. government’s focus on highway safety, a new Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) pullout officially opened on Highway 5A to further improve safety for all motorists (July 14, 2014).

Located approximately 12 kilometres south of Kamloops, the southbound pullout provides a hub for enforcement and inspections.

Born of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, the 1,900 mile Dominion Telegraph Line linked Dawson City with Vancouver via the CPR wires through Ashcroft. Built in 1899-1901, the line blazed a route across this vast northern section of the Province but gave way to radio communications in the 1930's. Today, some of the trail and cabins used by the isolated telegraphsers still serve wildreness travellers.

Olmsted Point (⬆elevation 8,300'/2,500m) is a popular pullout on Tioga Road. You can, as many do, hop out of your car and take a quick snapshot or selfie with Half Dome off in the distance and then drive on to the next attraction. However, if you are not rushed for time try a short, easy decent down the path to the granite ledge for a more breathtaking view of Half Dome.

Camera details:

• Olympus E-30

• Zuiko Digital 14-54mm f 2.8/3.5 lens

• Save to Olympus RAW (ORF)

• Panorama stitched from seven images.

Workflow

rawtherapee v4.2 to "develop" seven RAW ORF (Olympus RAW) images. For each of the seven adjust their exposure to -1.0ev, 0.0ev, and +1.0ev. Save each exposure to a 16-bit TIFF for a total of 21 TIFF images (7 images x 3 exposures = 21).

enfuse v4.2 to blend each image's exposure stack. I.e. (en)fuse the -1.0ev, 0.0ev, and +1.0ev images into a single 16-bit TIFF image. In the end there will be a panorama stitched (next step) from the seven (en)fused TIFF images.*

hugin v2016.2.0 to stitch a equirectangular panini projected panorama image from the seven enfused 16-bit TIFFs. Save the panorama as a 16-bit TIFF image.

rawtherapee again, to convert the panoramic color image into a black-and-white image using the film simulation feature HALD CLUT (Color LookUp Table) pattern files. I.e. take the panorama image and simulate a Ilford HP5 film capture.

GIMP v2.8.18

▹ Remove, with Heal-Selection plugin (similar to Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill) out-of-focus, overhanging tree branches

  ▹ Crop to final size

▹ Add copyright text to lower-right of the image

• Apply output sharpening with Focus Magic.†

exiftool v10.23 to copy the .ORF EXIF tags back into the final JPEG. And to set other tags, e.g. keywords.

digikam v5.4.0 to geotag image (using its GPS track log time-correlation feature).

Linux Kubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak).

MSI GT683 laptop with an Intel i7-2630QM Quad-core 2.0GHz processor and w/16GB RAM.

* Automation software was employed to reduce the large number of image processing steps involving rawtherapee and enfuse.

Focus Magic is a Windows application. To run it on Linux, WINE v1.8.5 is required.
