"Jemima Puddle-duck became quite desperate. She determined to make a nest
right away from the farm.
She set off on a fine spring afternoon along the cart-road that leads over
the hill.
She was wearing a shawl and a poke bonnet.
When she reached the top of the hill, she saw a wood in the distance.
She thought that it looked a safe quiet spot."
Beatrix Potter, "THE TALE OF JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK"
Mud-puddling is the phenomenon mostly seen in butterflies and involves their aggregation on substrates like wet soil, dung and carrion to obtain nutrients such as salts and amino acids.
Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are diverse in their strategies to gather liquid nutrients. Typically, mud-puddling behavior takes place on wet soil. But even sweat on human skin may be attractive to butterflies. The most unusual sources include blood and tears.
This behaviour is restricted to males in many species. Males seem to benefit from the sodium uptake through mud-puddling behaviour with an increase in reproductive success. The collected sodium and amino acids are often transferred to the female with the spermatophore during mating as a nuptial gift. This nutrition also enhances the survival rate of the eggs.
We have been rained on for days here in Augusta, GA. Just some of the many puddles on the Augusta Canal Trail.
Scenes from nature, July 31, 2016--Sharon, Connecticut, USA--1 of 5 images. There were Crescent Butterflies, everywhere! I'm not sure of specific ID.
Done! I decided I liked the cloth owls with the roses and I added some more moss. You can just about fit a mini that doesn't have big hair on the little bench. Hehe, the brown owl looks like it's checking out the pink one above it.
After the recent 8” of rain, there are lingering puddles along the roads; some look deep enough to swim in! It’s gray today, but no rain forecasted so I went out for a 5.25 mile walk.
My 365-2022: #8 of 365
It's Puddle's favorite kind of day outside! She did mention it could be a little rainier! I was trying to rematte her makeup and it turned white so I quickly had to replace her blush ans shadow, she got a few freckles and lower lashes in the mishap as well!
One of six poems by Simon Armitage, carved into stones in various locations across Lancashire and Yorkshire by sculptor Pip Hall. This one is near Whetstone Gate, high on Rombalds Moor.
It reads:
Puddle
Rain-junk
Sky-litter
Some May mornings Atlantic storm-horses clatter this way,
shedding their iron shoes in potholes and ruts,
shoes that melt into steel grey puddles
then settle and set into cloudless mirrors by noon.
The shy deer of the daytime moon comes to sip from the rim
But the sun likes the look of itself, stares all afternoon,
its hard eye lifting the sheen from the glass,
turning the glaze to rust.
Then we don’t see things for dust.
It's a lot of fun to walk around and look at everyone's dolls. I enjoy seeing how people customize them. But it's also neat to see some of the rarer dolls or brand new ones in person.

A jogger is mirrored in a puddle near the reflecting pool of the Lincoln Memorial. Washington Monument is in background.
