Just for fun Saturday night, I included my fire picture in the Picture of the Week slide show. And though I made it the last picture in the show — total low priority — someone at cleveland.com decided to use it as the picture to promo the show. Interesting.
Here is a pair of woodblock prints, one Japanese and the other American. Got the pair at GoodWill for $2.99.

The Postcard
A postcard that was published by Hartmann that was posted in Pevensey using a ½d. stamp on Tuesday the 15th. September 1903. It was sent to:
Mr. Bowder,
34, Lower Green,
Rusthall,
Tunbridge Wells.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"My Dear Will,
Many thanks for fare
just received.
I do hope dear that
you will have a really
good time in town, &
nice weather.
Give my love to dear
old Pat and tell her I
am writing later.
Hope you are enjoying
yourself dear.
Kind love to all at Lower
Green from all."
Roy Acuff
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 15th. September 1903, Roy Claxton Acuff was born in Maynardville, Tennessee, the third of 5 children.
Roy became a well-known American country music singer, fiddler, and promoter.
Known as the 'King of Country Music,' Acuff is often credited with moving the genre from its early string band and 'hoedown' format to the singer-based format that made it internationally successful.
Acuff began his music career in the 1930's, and gained regional fame as the singer and fiddler for his group, the Smoky Mountain Boys.
He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, and remained one of the Opry's key figures and promoters for nearly four decades.
In 1952, Hank Williams told Ralph Gleason:
"He's the biggest singer this
music ever knew. You booked
him and you didn't worry about
crowds.
For drawing power in the South,
it was Roy Acuff, then God."
A popular legend is that Japanese troops during WWII would enter battle yelling:
"To hell with Roy Acuff".

In 1942, Acuff and Fred Rose founded Acuff-Rose Music, the first major Nashville-based country music publishing company, which signed such artists as Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and the Everly Brothers.

In 1962, Acuff became the first living inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Roy died on the 23rd. November 1992.
This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 8th November 1916
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.
