The Paths of Light

I know you're not really interested in this, or at least not in detail. Nevertheless, I'd like to explain the image and my photography in general.

My camera is often the same as the sketchbooks of painters from back when they couldn't take tubes of paint outside. They captured what they saw in their sketchbooks, primed their canvases, transferred their preliminary drawings (usually altered in scale and dimensions/proportions), and then, if necessary, further differentiated them with color in many layers.

Every part of the image you see is truly newly conceived, and much of it isn't even the origin of Gehry's "original."

He provided basic elements and inspiration in three-dimensionality, which I used as abstract two-dimensional elements to make them appear three-dimensional.

So, the basic image of my photo here was initially vertical and rectangular, with a section in the original that I couldn't logically or spatially comprehend at all. Then, I altered it, first making it square, then adding another rectangle... and only when I turned it horizontal did it become graphically understandable again.

Every edge, every surface you see was drawn, painted, by me with the Photoshop brush. The lighting was recreated.

If you now look at my account, it appears very heterogeneous at first glance. Here, too, despite the strong similarities in composition, I haven't adapted to the contrasts and gray tones of the previous image.

Art, for outsiders and laypeople alike, can often only be understood as such if it is based on a certain long-term program, a concept, an idea, and doesn't appear arbitrary and random. Therefore, it is also completely independent of any aesthetic (on the contrary, it is always suspect).

It often thrives on disruption, not harmony. Sometimes, even ugliness, provocation, disturbance, banality, or "lack of talent" can make something artful.

For me, each image is important only as an individual. Each image gets its own frame, its own stamp. Everything has to do it justice.

Curiosity about diversity is in my nature, and I can afford to be completely indifferent to everything else. ;-) ...

Ich weiß ja, dass euch das gar nicht interessiert oder zumindest nicht so genau. Dennoch möchte ich das Bild und meine Fotografie im Allgemeinen erläutern.

Meine Kamera ist oft das Gleiche, wie früher Skizzenhefte von Malern, die noch keine Tubenfarben mit nach draußen nehmen konnten und das gesehene in ihren Skizzenheften zurück in ihr Atelier brachten, ihre Leinwände grundierten, das vorgezeichnete, meist im Maßstab und Dimension/Proportion verändert, übertrugen, es gegebenenfalls in vielen Schichten dann noch farblich differenzierten.

Jedes Bildteil, das ihr seht, ist wirklich neu konzipiert und vieles ist gar nicht der Ursprung von Gehrys "Origina".

Er lieferte Grundelemente und Anregungen in der Dreidimensionalität, die ich als Abstrakt zweidimensional ausnutzte, um sie dreidimensional erscheinen zu lassen.

So war das Grundbild, meines Foto, hier, erst senkrecht, rechteckig, mit einer Stelle im Original, die ich logisch, räumlich, gar nicht nachvollziehen konnte, dann, von mir verändert, erst quadratisch, dann wieder rechteckig ergänzt ... und erst als ich es in die Waagerechte brachte, wieder grafisch zu verstehen.

Jede Kante, jede Fläche, die ihr seht, ist von mir mit dem Photoshop-Pinsel gezeichnet, gemalt. Die Lichtsetzung wurde neu geschaffen.

Wenn man nun auf meinen Account schaut, so ist er sehr inhomogen, auf den ersten Blick. Auch hier habe ich mich nicht, obwohl viel Ähnlichkeit in der Komposition vorliegt, an die Kontraste und Grautönungen des Vorgängerbildes angepasst.

Kunst ist oft, für Außenstehende und Laien wie Profis, nur als solche zu begreifen, wenn ihr eine gewisse langfristige Programmatik, ein Konzept, eine Idee zugrunde liegt und sie nicht willkürlich und zufällig erscheint, eben darum auch vollkommen unabhängig von irgendeiner Ästhetik (im Gegenteil, sie ist immer verdächtig).

Sie lebt oft vom Bruch und nicht von der Harmonie. Manchmal machen sogar Hässlichkeit, Provokation, Verstörung, Banalität, "Unbegabtheit" eine Sache erst kunstverdächtig.

Mir ist jedes Bild nur einzeln wichtig. Jedes Bild bekommt seinen eigenen Rahmen, seine eigenen Stempel. Alles muss nur ihm gerecht werden.

Neugier auf Vielfalt ist meine Natur und ich kann es mir leisten, dass mir der Rest vollkommen egal ist. ;-) ...

Das Werk "Comedian" des Italieners Maurizio Cattelan, eine mit Klebeband an einer Wand befestigte Banane, ist bei einer Auktion in New York am 20.11.2024 für 6,2 Millionen Dollar versteigert worden. Vor fünf Jahren hatte das Werk noch für 120.000 Dollar zum Verkauf gestanden. Cattelans Werk hatte 2019 bei der Art Basel Miami Beach eine Kontroverse ausgelöst und Fragen aufgeworfen, ob es als Kunst gelten könne - genau das wollte der Künstler eigenen Angaben nach bezwecken. Man muss wissen, dass die Person, die das Kunstwerk käuflich erwirbt, nicht die Banane selbst bekommt, sondern ein Zertifikat der Authentizität, das dem Besitzer die Erlaubnis und Befugnis verleiht, eine Banane mit dieser Art Klebeband auf seiner Wand als Original-Kunstwerk von Maurizio Cattelan zu reproduzieren.

Meine "Taped Banana" kann, in einer streng limitierten Auflage von 66 Ausdrucken, deutlich preiswerter erworben werden. Die Banane ist noch nicht geschält. 😂

And sometimes, the drawing understands the garment before the camera does, because the fashion industry has always known how to turn lines on paper into walking, breathing statements of desire, confidence, and style.

Le trouvant talentueux, j’avais déposé quelques pesos dans sa sébile et lui avais demandé l’autorisation de le photographier. Refus catégorique. Je n’avais pas insisté. Ce n’était pas la première fois que j’essuyais un tel refus depuis mon arrivée au Mexique. Plus tard, je suis repassé devant lui, un peu par provocation je dois l’avouer, et pris cette photo tout en marchand, sans le regarder. Retour sur investissement.

En photographiant dans ces conditions, j’avais de grandes chances de rater ma photo, même en ayant pris soin d’affiner mes réglages préalablement. Mon geste était prémédité.

San Cristobal de las Casas (Mexico) - This photo of this guitarist was shamelessly stolen. I had passed in front of him an hour before. Finding him talented, I put a few pesos in his bowl and asked him for permission to photograph him. Categorical refusal. I didn't insist. It was not the first time that I had received such a refusal since my arrival in Mexico. Later, I walked past him again, a little out of provocation I must admit, and took this photo while haggling, without looking at him. Return on investment.

When photographing in these conditions, I had a good chance of failing my photo, even if I had taken care to refine my settings beforehand. My action was premeditated.

I recently purchased a Polaroid Next + Camera. It has a companion bluetooth app. The app allows several creative techniques. One is a double exposure option. This is my first attempt.

I never believe beauty begins with the dress. It begins in the details, those small dangerous decisions that make a glance linger, a mouth remembered, and a hand impossible to ignore. The Lighting Of The Sails: The Kiss Of Light.

Photographed from the northern end of the Overseas Passenger Terminal, near Campbells Cove.

The artist, the late David McDiarmid, was a defining voice of late 20th century's radical counterculture. He fused art, fashion, nightlife with bold activism and unapologetic self-expression.

On the 30th anniversary of the artist’s death, 'Lighting of the Sails: Kiss of Light' transforms his life’s work, rooted in activism and provocation, into a new animation projected onto the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Sydney, 2025.

Organised by mood and feeling, 'Kiss of Light' is a slow dance of texture, colour, feeling and idea, tracing the artist’s punk origins. Featuring four key bodies of work - the Bedsheet Paintings, Disco Kwilts, and the Kiss of Light and Rainbow Aphorisms - the animation draws forward McDiarmid’s practice to the present day, broadcasting the experiences of a repressed minority while embodying complex truths, absorbing fear and preserving memory.

The European robin (Erithacus rubecula), known simply as the robin or robin redbreast in the British Isles, is a small insectivorous passerine bird, specifically a chat, that was formerly classified as a member of the thrush family (Turdidae) but is now considered to be an Old World flycatcher. About 12.5–14.0 cm (5.0–5.5 inches) in length, the male and female are similar in colouration, with an orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upperparts and a whitish belly. The robin is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlit nights or near artificial light at night. Indeed, the robin is considered to be a gardener's friend and for various folklore reasons the robin would never be harmed. Because of high mortality in the first year of life, a robin has an average life expectancy of 1.1 years; however, once past its first year it can expect to live longer and one robin has been recorded as reaching 19 years of age. A spell of very low temperatures in winter may also result in significant mortality.

WINNER OF THE BEST FLICKR PHOTO OF THE DAY

In 2018, on our way to the Big Bend National Park from San Antonio, we drove through a small Texan town, which felt like a well-wrapped memento from another era that had somehow survived more centuries than it was designed for. Brick-buff buildings along the main street gave the town a rugged western look, which fitted in well with all the big trucks and SUVs on the road, a typical Texan arrogance about having nothing but the biggest. I recall slowing down to absorb the curious town a little more. People were unhurried and the place had a tidy charm. The town's name was prominently displayed on multiple banners and buildings, including the city hall and the municipal courthouse… “City of Uvalde”. ‘What a pretty name!’, I thought then.

There is nothing pretty about that name today. Uvalde is now a town of inept and cowardly cops, a profanity-spewing mayor, a bestial teenage gunman, and 78 stygian minutes of hell where 19 innocent children lost their right to live (which is not exactly a constitutional right but is granted to everyone nonetheless, at least in developed countries). But don’t guilt Uvalde, Texas. This scenario could have played out –and for hell’s sake, will again play out– in any American city or town, including the one you or I live in. There are mentally unstable people in most streets of every town, and in the USA –to rest of the world’s utter horror and pity– so are assault rifles. These rifles, if you didn’t know, spew high velocity bullets which pierce a human body so violently that they instantaneously shatter and mince up to six inches of tissue around their path. Guess how many such assault rifles are out there today? About 20 million. I will let you do the math of figuring out the odds of one of those assault rifles making its way into the classroom (or the mall, playground, park, cinema, or church) where your kid/grandkid(s) go(es) every day. Even with rudimentary math skills, one will know that the odds are not in favor of our little ones.

Now the question is, what are we doing about it? May I answer that question bluntly? We are doing N-O-T-H-I-N-G about it. Nothing! We march on the streets of Washington D.C. for every big and small reason, including our bodies and our wars, but no crowd has marched with similar urgency demanding our kids’ right to safety. Against gun violence, no one has crossed a Selma bridge yet. Not one parent has stood up on the mighty stairs of the Lincoln memorial and stirred the nation with a speech that may have begun with words like, “I have a dream…’. We have done nothing worth a mention. We are angry, but are squarely happy to put the blame on our politicians. While the politicians deserve every bit of the blame they get, but the important point is, they know how toothless we the public are. We let them gerrymander us. We let them provoke us in any way they see fit. And worst of all, they have somehow managed to make all of us care for our second amendment rights more than our beautiful kids. The shame is not on them. We –you and I– carry the shame! Columbine, Sandy Hook, and many hollow promises later, we have now shamelessly failed those Uvalde kids. Again. And we will fail more kids in days to come. We are a bunch of milksops. To stir our flaccid souls, perhaps we need live video streams of our kids slowly succumbing to bullet wounds. I worry, even such George Floydian provocation may not be enough to counter our apathy towards causing a change.

Where is your heart? Where are your tears? Where the hell is your anger? I do not give a damn about your political color if you do not care about our kids. Yes, we cannot rid every town of madmen in a hurry, nor should we take guns back from responsible owners, but there is room and means to completely disconnect madmen from assault rifles. Now, before one of those 20 million assault rifles –just one– makes it into the hands of a maniac in your town near your child’s school, will you PLEASE take a steely stance as a parent/grandparent so that none of our kids have to whisper and plead a 911 dispatcher from their school ever again? I don’t have to tell you what to do. Other than calling up your lawmakers and donating to organizations of youth mental health, you could also decide to go march in DC. If you so do, please drop me a line. I will come with you.
