William Eggleston Mystery of the Ordinary

 

In the twilight, the shadows of the plants grow mysteriously along the wall of the house. In front of this shadow theater stands a metallic-lilac Cadillac, on whose lustrous paint the last rays of the sun dance. The brick-lined flowerbed, the shrubs planted in it, and the straw-woven blinds in the window front with their rusty colors complement this image composition, which at the same time radiates an eerie calm.

 

In a career spanning over five decades, William Eggleston has come to be recognized for almost single-handedly elevating color photography to the status of fine art. Along with Stephen Shore and Evelyn Hofer, Eggleston was one of the first photographers to recognize the distinctive power of color and its unique capacity to create pictures that continuously challenge the everyday. A blue bouquet on the door of a house, a colorfully tiled building façade, a ceiling painted glossy blood red: the intensity of the color alone, and Eggleston’s abiding sensitivity to it, was a formal and analytical provocation.

I was lucky to get a bit closer to this turtle as it is extremely skittish but it took me a long while.

 

I still kept a good distance and even though I was unable to capture what I wanted, I am still happy with this image.

 

I have never took the time in the past to read about the Map Turtle. So here is what I found in the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks website:

 

Status: Special Concern

 

“Special Concern” means the species lives in the wild in Ontario, is not endangered or threatened, but may become threatened or endangered due to a combination of biological characteristics and identified threats.

 

Quick Facts:

 

1) The female Northern Map Turtle has powerful jaws for crushing the shells of molluscs, its primary food source.

 

2) The Northern Map Turtle is extremely wary and will dive into the water at the slightest provocation.

 

3) Northern Map Turtles are known for their communal basking, and may be found piled up together in several layers of up to 30 turtles.

 

4) Map turtles will often bask at the surface of the water under floating vegetation mats with nothing but their head or nose visible from the surface. This behaviour puts map turtles at significant risk of mortality from motorboats.

The carnival (rather, the many carnivals) in Galicia has its own rituals and calendars, whose origins date back, in some cases, to time immemorial, long before even Roman domination. Some authors speak of Celtic origins or Druidic rituals in many of the Galician carnivals, but the truth is that they have been celebrated "forever".

 

Banned during the Franco regime due to the "public disorders" that it involved, the carnival in Galicia never stopped being celebrated, having maintained its own cultural tradition that is transmitted from generation to generation. Carnival is the party of excess, provocation and mockery, as in many other carnivals in various parts of the world, but in Galicia it is also a party full of color, traditional costumes and masks and, of course, deeply linked to the gastronomy.

 

Known in Galician as entroido or antroido (depending on the area), each town and village has its specific variants of the carnival. Of the hundreds of different carnivals that are celebrated in Galicia, eight of them have been declared as festivals of international tourist interest, precisely the most colorful and deeply rooted in the Galician cultural tradition.

European robin (Erithacus rubecula), Ballynaraha North, Co. Kerry, Ireland. The robin is diurnal, although has been reported to be active hunting insects on moonlit nights or near artificial light at night. Male robins are noted for their highly aggressive territorial behaviour. They will fiercely attack other males and competitors that stray into their territories and have been observed attacking other small birds without apparent provocation.

The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is native to southeast North America. This reptile belongs to an ancient family (Chelydridae) that evolved in North America around 90 million years ago and has remained little changed since that time. Snapping turtles are omnivores and eat a wide variety of food sources including animals such as birds, frogs, snakes, fish and invertebrates as well as plants. During winter, they hibernate underwater in lakes and ponds buried in sediment in locations that do not freeze.

 

Contrary to popular belief, snapping turtles are not aggressive and much prefer to avoid confrontation. However, unlike most turtle species, snappers are unable to withdraw their heads fully into their shells for protection and have no choice but to defend themselves from predators and needless provocation by humans.

 

The photo shows a female snapping turtle searching for a suitable sandy nesting site where she can lay her eggs.

Unfortunately choice sites are often sandy areas by the side of roads or as in the photo on a gravel road in a wilderness area.

The Lighting Of The Sails: The Kiss Of Light.

This is one of many artworks projected onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Sydney 2025.

 

Photographed from the Cahill Walkway on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Near the south-eastern pylon.

 

The artist, the late David McDiarmid, was a defining voice of late 20th century's radical counterculture. He fused art, fashion, nightlife with bold activism and unapologetic self-expression.

 

On the 30th anniversary of the artist’s death, 'Lighting of the Sails: Kiss of Light' transforms his life’s work, rooted in activism and provocation, into a new animation projected onto the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Sydney, 2025.

 

Organised by mood and feeling, 'Kiss of Light' is a slow dance of texture, colour, feeling and idea, tracing the artist’s punk origins. Featuring four key bodies of work - the Bedsheet Paintings, Disco Kwilts, and the Kiss of Light and Rainbow Aphorisms - the animation draws forward McDiarmid’s practice to the present day, broadcasting the experiences of a repressed minority while embodying complex truths, absorbing fear and preserving memory.

A juvenile Bald Eagle was sitting on a snow covered dirt hill when another one came too close. It appears that the first one stepped on the second one's wing that immediately resulted in confrontation (next shot). Ok, not really stepped on, it is most likely an optical illusion because of limited spatial resolution; however, close enough to initiate the confrontation.

Beauty or provocation - on the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere ?

 

Yesterday, I came across this photo in my archive and immediately fell in love with it all over again. I consider it one of my best, even if the composition is perhaps simple.

What makes it so desirable to me?

Well, it was taken in a temple of art, designed by Tadao Ando, an architect I greatly admire.

It was in an exhibition at the Langen Foundation, which probably has the largest collection of Japanese/Asian art outside Japan.

The theme was Buddha, and I noticed that the male Buddha figures looked very androgynous to feminine, had very pronounced waists, and at least the beginnings of a rather feminine chest, as is otherwise only seen in corpulent men.

I researched this but found no explanation, only that this religion has similar problems with the female world as others, although the enlightenment of a woman is actually considered possible.

I have encountered such Buddhas in my photography and have always been fascinated by how relaxed they appear, a relaxation and serenity that goes hand in hand with dignity and charisma, which for me even has something in common with our upcoming Christmas. What would happen if I had used this photo as my Christmas picture?

 

What else makes the photo good?

Perhaps the anachronism to modern architecture and security technology?

Perhaps the possibility of an exit?

„Der Erwachte“

 

Schönheit oder Provokation - am kürzesten Tag des Jahres in der nördlichen Hemisphäre ?

 

Gestern stieß ich in meinem Archiv auf dieses Foto und verliebte mich gleich aufs Neue. Ich empfinde es als eines meiner besten, auch wenn die Komposition vielleicht einfach ist.

Was macht es für mich so begehrenswert?

Nun, es wurde in enem Kunsttempel aufgenommen, von Tadao Ando, einem Architekten, den ich sehr schätze.

Es war in eine Ausstellung der Langenfoundation, die wohl außerhalb Japans die größte Sammlung japanisch/asiatischer Kunst weltweit besitzt.

Das Thema war Buddha und mir fiel auf, dass die männlichen Buddhafiguren sehr androgyn bis weiblich aussahen, sehr betonte Taillen hatten und mindesten Ansätze von einer eher weiblich Brust, wie sonst nur bei korpulenten Männern zu sehen.

Ich habe geforscht, aber dafür keine Erklärung gefunden, nur dass diese Religion ähnliche Problem mit der Frauenwelt hat, wie andere, obwohl die Erleuchtung einer Frau tatsächlich für möglich gehalten wird.

 

Mir sind in meiner Fotografie so einige Buddhas begegnet und ich war immer fasziniert, wie entspannt sie wirken, eine Entspanntheit und Gelassenheit, die mit Würde und Ausstrahlung einhergeht, die für mich sogar etwas hat, das für mich für unser kommendes Weihnachten etwas Gemeinsames/Bedeutendes hat.

 

Was würde geschehen, wenn ich diese Aufnahme als mein Weihnachtsbild gebracht hätte?

 

Was macht das Foto vielleicht sonst noch gut ?

Vielleicht der Anachronismus zur modernen Architektur und Sicherheitstechnik ?

Vielleicht das die Möglichkeit zum Exit besteht ?

This beautiful rosella landed on the telephone line opposite my home one early morning. However, perhaps it had got out of the wrong side of the nest that day…

All appeared quite normal when, for no apparent reason, it took great offence over the fact that a Spotted dove who had been there for a while already, and was happily (if a little monotonously) cooing away as they do, was perched not far away. Without further provocation it then launched a full on attack, not only frightening the daylights out of the poor creature but also removing a beak full of feathers!

For Two Pins is a saying mostly heard in the UK meaning

at the slightest provocation; for the smallest reason.

Anyways, for two pins I'd be home sitting in the shade in the garden with a tall glass of iced lemonade. The air conditioning has packed up at work and it's a little hot in the office today.

The final two species in this "Wildlife in Winter" series are found in the same frame. Magpies like to perch on Plains Bison and hunt for insects; in winter, there may be the added attraction of the bison's warm coats. For a magpie it may be like slipping into a toasty pair of soft, warm moccasins.

 

It isn't the most dynamic shot I have of bison; I like the bull at the left, but I wish the one on the right were doing something other than staring at me. But the flight of the magpie makes up for it, I think, and the light was great that day.

 

Black-billed Magpies are smart, wary, and tough; they are among the very few bird species that stick around all winter. Their glossy black plumage shines with a green iridescence, and their wings flash white in flight. I see them on the outskirts of the village, and on almost every trip into the park, but have very few good shots - they will fly away at the slightest provocation... for example, if I slow the rolling red Toyota blind at a distance of 200 yards. That's enough to spook them. Some great shots have gotten away, though. Once I had a full frame vertical shot of a bison's head with a magpie perched between its eyes. It flew a split second before I could find the focus and release the shutter. Sigh. Another fish story.

 

In a way, I don't mind. I've been at this for a very long time, but there are still blank spots on the map. It keeps me motivated.

Located at the northern end of the Odaiba reclaimed land, this is Odaiba in the narrow sense. It is an off-shore islet protected by stone walls and installed with cannons, which is conserved as a historic monument.

 

Planted trees are Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii). It is planted all over Odaiba.

 

In response to the provocation by the US "Black Ships" in 1853, Tokugawa Shogunate ordered Egawa Hidetatsu Tarouzaemon (江川英龍太郎左衛門) to construct a set of battery to protect the capital of Japan from foreign powers. He barely completed the difficult task in eight months and died soon after the completion probably due to the hard work.

 

He was originally a local magistrate in Nirayama at the foot of Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka prefecture. He became interested in the coastal defence matters, learned Western gunnery and techniques in Nagasaki, and eventually involved in the Tokugawa shogunate with this matter.

 

He realised the necessity to introduce modern iron foundry techniques to produce modern arsenal, for which he auto-didactically constructed the first reverberatory furnace in Japan in his home town of Nirayama.

 

Egawa's residence is conserved in his hometown. It is a traditional wooden structure constructed in the 17th century without a nail (flic.kr/p/HaHVkF), which is interesting as he is considered the father of modern iron foundry in Japan.

La scala del Palazzo Reale è soprannominata “Scala delle Forbici” per un particolare che è stato posto da Juvarra in corrispondenza dell’imposta della volta sospesa, dove un paio di forbici tagliano le due trecce laterali incrociate creando una lingua biforcuta.

La leggenda narra che questa lingua sia un’allusione e una provocazione di Juvarra alle malelingue di corte che dicevano che l’architetto non sarebbe riuscito nella realizzazione dell’impresa.

The staircase of the Royal Palace is nicknamed “Scala delle Scissors” (Scissors Staircase) for a detail that was placed by Juvarra in correspondence with the springer of the suspended vault, where a pair of scissors cut the two crossed lateral braids creating a forked tongue.

Legend has it that this tongue is an allusion and a provocation by Juvarra to the gossips at court who said that the architect would not succeed in realizing the undertaking.

When I look at this scene, with that glorious cross of golden light projected by the rising sun, I cannot avoid a sense of awe, and the adventure of post-processing could only confirm and deepen that feeling. One could think that I could express some pride for such a work, but it would be inappropriate. Nature is the author of this wonder, and I am only an humble means to tidy it up a bit and offer its beauty to everyone would take the time to have a look. And it makes me wonder about how God sometimes reveals Himself in special moments - and we are sometimes lucky enough to be able to capture them with a camera.

At last I realized that I had this lesson by a great mentor, and I decided to tell it to those who, intrigued by the Latin title of the photo, will decide to continue reading.

 

"Soli Deo Gloria" is a Lutheran Latin motto meaning "Glory to God alone". Johann Sebastian Bach was a very proud man when dealing with wordly powers, but he used to put this motto at the end of his works, humbing himself in front of God. One day someone asked him how could he produce such an awful lot of great music - a provocative question, since Bach's work was on the old-fashioned side of the music of the time, to which Bach provocatively answered: "By working a lot". So he was stubborn and proud, but he was also aware that all his genius and hard work was not for his own glorification, but rather a way to induce people to perceive God, to sincerely glorifying Him. Bach made it all crystal clear in the Musical Offering BWV 1079 (1747), one of his last works and one of his very few published ones. The Musical Offering is definitely not a sacred music work, nonetheless it is a treatise about the real status of the supposed worldly glory of Man. It is formally dedicated to Frederick II the Great and is, basically, the devastating response to a humiliation that Bach had suffered at the hands of Frederick some months before. It was not simply a challenge between two quite different musical worlds, but a clash of two mutually incompatible worldviews. The Musical Offering is full of provocations and ironic remarks to the king - who, at our knowledge, was fully unresponsive to the challenge. The typical procedure is as this: while apparently celebrating the glory and greatness of the king through Latin mottoes like "Ascendenteque Modulatione ascendat Gloria Regis" (as the modulation rises, so may the King's glory), the actual music tells a vastly different story (the rising modulation, through subtle artifices, is actually perceived as descending). So, even if Frederick did not care a bit of Bach's powerful response (maybe he did not even open the luxury dedicatory copy Bach sent to him), we are left with a deep reflection about the glory and power of this world. A lesson still to be learned by the posterity.

 

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.3/0/+1.3 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal" exposure shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4. RAW files processed with Darktable 3

The Paths of Light

 

I know you're not really interested in this, or at least not in detail. Nevertheless, I'd like to explain the image and my photography in general.

 

My camera is often the same as the sketchbooks of painters from back when they couldn't take tubes of paint outside. They captured what they saw in their sketchbooks, primed their canvases, transferred their preliminary drawings (usually altered in scale and dimensions/proportions), and then, if necessary, further differentiated them with color in many layers.

 

Every part of the image you see is truly newly conceived, and much of it isn't even the origin of Gehry's "original."

 

He provided basic elements and inspiration in three-dimensionality, which I used as abstract two-dimensional elements to make them appear three-dimensional.

 

So, the basic image of my photo here was initially vertical and rectangular, with a section in the original that I couldn't logically or spatially comprehend at all. Then, I altered it, first making it square, then adding another rectangle... and only when I turned it horizontal did it become graphically understandable again.

 

Every edge, every surface you see was drawn, painted, by me with the Photoshop brush. The lighting was recreated.

 

If you now look at my account, it appears very heterogeneous at first glance. Here, too, despite the strong similarities in composition, I haven't adapted to the contrasts and gray tones of the previous image.

 

Art, for outsiders and laypeople alike, can often only be understood as such if it is based on a certain long-term program, a concept, an idea, and doesn't appear arbitrary and random. Therefore, it is also completely independent of any aesthetic (on the contrary, it is always suspect).

 

It often thrives on disruption, not harmony. Sometimes, even ugliness, provocation, disturbance, banality, or "lack of talent" can make something artful.

 

For me, each image is important only as an individual. Each image gets its own frame, its own stamp. Everything has to do it justice.

 

Curiosity about diversity is in my nature, and I can afford to be completely indifferent to everything else. ;-) ...

Ich weiß ja, dass euch das gar nicht interessiert oder zumindest nicht so genau. Dennoch möchte ich das Bild und meine Fotografie im Allgemeinen erläutern.

 

Meine Kamera ist oft das Gleiche, wie früher Skizzenhefte von Malern, die noch keine Tubenfarben mit nach draußen nehmen konnten und das gesehene in ihren Skizzenheften zurück in ihr Atelier brachten, ihre Leinwände grundierten, das vorgezeichnete, meist im Maßstab und Dimension/Proportion verändert, übertrugen, es gegebenenfalls in vielen Schichten dann noch farblich differenzierten.

 

Jedes Bildteil, das ihr seht, ist wirklich neu konzipiert und vieles ist gar nicht der Ursprung von Gehrys "Origina".

Er lieferte Grundelemente und Anregungen in der Dreidimensionalität, die ich als Abstrakt zweidimensional ausnutzte, um sie dreidimensional erscheinen zu lassen.

 

So war das Grundbild, meines Foto, hier, erst senkrecht, rechteckig, mit einer Stelle im Original, die ich logisch, räumlich, gar nicht nachvollziehen konnte, dann, von mir verändert, erst quadratisch, dann wieder rechteckig ergänzt ... und erst als ich es in die Waagerechte brachte, wieder grafisch zu verstehen.

 

Jede Kante, jede Fläche, die ihr seht, ist von mir mit dem Photoshop-Pinsel gezeichnet, gemalt. Die Lichtsetzung wurde neu geschaffen.

 

Wenn man nun auf meinen Account schaut, so ist er sehr inhomogen, auf den ersten Blick. Auch hier habe ich mich nicht, obwohl viel Ähnlichkeit in der Komposition vorliegt, an die Kontraste und Grautönungen des Vorgängerbildes angepasst.

 

Kunst ist oft, für Außenstehende und Laien wie Profis, nur als solche zu begreifen, wenn ihr eine gewisse langfristige Programmatik, ein Konzept, eine Idee zugrunde liegt und sie nicht willkürlich und zufällig erscheint, eben darum auch vollkommen unabhängig von irgendeiner Ästhetik (im Gegenteil, sie ist immer verdächtig).

 

Sie lebt oft vom Bruch und nicht von der Harmonie. Manchmal machen sogar Hässlichkeit, Provokation, Verstörung, Banalität, "Unbegabtheit" eine Sache erst kunstverdächtig.

 

Mir ist jedes Bild nur einzeln wichtig. Jedes Bild bekommt seinen eigenen Rahmen, seine eigenen Stempel. Alles muss nur ihm gerecht werden.

 

Neugier auf Vielfalt ist meine Natur und ich kann es mir leisten, dass mir der Rest vollkommen egal ist. ;-) ...
