Sergei Alexandrovich Yesenin was a Russian lyric poet. He is one of the most popular and well-known Russian poets of the 20th century. One of his narratives was "lyrical evocations of and nostalgia for the village life of his childhood – no idyll, presented in all its rawness, with an implied curse on urbanisation and industrialisation".
Sergei Yesenin was born in village of Konstantinovo in Ryazan County, Ryazan Governorate of the Russian Empire (now Rybnovsky District, Ryazan Oblast) to a peasant family. His father was Alexander Nikitich Yesenin (1873–1931), his mother's name was Tatyana Fyodorovna (nee Titova, 1875–1955).
Both his parents spent most of their time looking for work, father in Moscow, mother in Ryazan, so at age two Sergei was moved to the nearby village Matovo, to join Fyodor Alexeyevich and Natalya Yevtikhiyevna Titovs, his relatively well-off maternal grandparents, who essentially raised him.
The Titovs had three grown-up sons, and it was they who were Yesenin's early years' companions. "My uncles taught me horse-riding and swimming, one of them... even employed me as hound-dog, when going out to the ponds hunting ducks," he later remembered. He started to read aged five, and at nine began to write poetry, inspired originally by chastushkas and folklore, provided mostly by the grandmother whom he also remembered as a highly religious woman who used to take him to every single monastery she chose to visit. He had two younger sisters, Yekaterina (1905–1977), and Alexandra (1911–1981).
In 1904 Yesenin joined the Konstantinovo zemstvo school. In 1909 he graduated from it with an honorary certificate, and went on to study in the local secondary parochial school in Spas-Klepiki. From 1910 onwards, he started to write poetry systematically; eight poems dated that year were later included in his 1925 Collected Works. In all, Yesenin wrote around thirty poems during his school years. He compiled them into what was supposed to be his first book which he titled "Bolnye Dumy" (Free Thoughts) and tried to publish it in 1912 in Ryazan, but failed.
In 1912, with a teacher’s diploma, Yesenin moved to Moscow, where he supported himself working as a proofreader's assistant at Sytin's printing company. The following year he enrolled in Shanyavsky Moscow City People's University to study history and philology as an external student (вольнослушатель), but had to leave it after eighteen months due to lack of funds. In the University he became friends with several aspiring poets, among them Dmitry Semyonovsky, Vasily Nasedkin, Nikolai Kolokolov and Ivan Filipchenko. Yesenin’s first marriage (which lasted three years) was in 1913 to Anna Izryadnova, a co-worker from the publishing house, with whom he had a son, Yuri.
1913 saw Yesenin becoming increasingly interested in Christianity, biblical motives became frequent in his poems. "Grisha, what I am reading at the moment is the Gospel and find a lot of things which for me are new," he wrote to his close childhood friend G. Panfilov. That was also the year when he became involved with the Moscow revolutionary circles: for several months his flat was under secret police surveillance and in September 1913 it was raided and searched.
January 1914, Yesenin's first published poem "Beryoza" (The Birch Tree) appeared in the children's magazine Mirok (Small World). More appearances followed in minor magazines such as Protalinka and Mlechny Put. In December 1914 Yesenin quit work "and gave himself to poetry, writing continually," according to his wife. Around this time he became a member of the Surikov Literary and Music circle.
On 28 December 1925, 30-year-old Yesenin was found dead in his room in the Hotel Angleterre in Leningrad. According to Wolf Ehrlich, Yesenin's final poem, Goodbye my friend, goodbye (До свиданья, друг мой, до свиданья), was written by him the day before he died. Yesenin complained that there was no ink in the room, and he was forced to write with his own blood.

Following a discussion with my proofreader/literary agent (sorry Simon) on the Purbeck cliffs this morning, I headed to Peveril Point in the hopes of seeing the newly arrived Sandwich Terns. A couple of hours spent watching these beautiful birds is never a waste, but they didn't come too close and so this is a bit of a tight crop.

Assuming you came from Mike Jones photostream (I don't know how to refer back to it yet) you know the infamous saga of the Yacht Club Dorks. Please note that the above is photoshopped, not an actual image.
After Mike spent a day mending fences at the club, this was one of the photos (I think) that was in the following weeks paper, but without the "DORK" shirts. One of the kids had on a DUKE shirt. I told Mike that he should have changed Duke to Dork. By this time, Mike had seen the amusing side to all the hullabaloo, so he quickly photoshopped up this gem. I believe I have the only copy in existence since if the paper's owner had seen it, Mike would no longer be with us.
What is really sad is that Mike had spent hours and hours setting up an absolutely fantastic color cover shot of the July 4th fireworks show for this paper. The effort was completely lost. It could have been a test pattern for all the attention it got. I've rarely seen Mike as low as he was that day and I guess it didn't really help that I almost injured myself laughing about it ten minutes after he had been savaged by the boss.
The copy is a printout, with little black and white squares suitable for newspaper printing so it is not the usual quality you Flickr folks expect.
For the record, while Mike deserved part of the blame for the original title (although any kid around that age is a dork,) there were at least four other levels after Mike who should have caught this before it went to press.
They believed very little in any sort of proofreading or editing at this paper. In one article, a storm or some other disaster "reeked havoc" both in the headline and in the story. In the description of a new B&B, the decorations in the entry hall were eloquent. I guess they spoke well of you as you passed.

Dear Mrs. Henney:
The American Foundation for the Blind has asked me to send you the translation I am doing of a biography of Louis Braille, so that you can make a resumé of it for Helen Keller's use. It is herewith enclosed, or as much of it as I have done so far and had typed up. The rest will be sent along to you as soon as it gets done. I am hoping to have it finished by the end of next week.
I must apologize for any inaccuracies or typographical errors you will find, and I know there are some from just a hurried glance at the pages; but I will not be able to proofread the manuscript until it is finished. It has to be checked for dates and inconsistencies of translation. Unfortunately, since the Foundation is eager to get the translation as soon as possible, I have had to have it typed as I went along—not the best way to do things.
Since the final draft has not been checked, please send it back to me when you have finished with it. After I have gone over it, I will it back to you (either the original copy or the carbon copy, whichever you prefer) together with the French original, and you can then send them both on to the Foundation. I will send the other copy directly to the Foundation myself.
When you return the translation to me, please send it to me here at the Department of Modern Languages at M.I.T. by Registered First Class mail.
As you will see, the biography is rather [crossed out: ly] highly fictionalized, but I hope it will be of use to you.
Sincerely yours,
Ruth Mandalian

The sign says:
The holes in the rock below by the ocean were made by the ancient Hawaiians to collect salt used to preserve dried meat and fish. They were also used to rinse Limu (Seaweed) and pund "Kalo" (Taro). Important parts of the Hawaiian diet.
"Important Parts of the Hawaiian diet." appears to be missing a verb. Doesn't anybody proofread signs before they have them made and cement them into the ground?
You'd think the world's largest brewer could afford a proofreader. They even got their own website wrong! Speaking of their website, the banner at the top instructs you to "Drink the Dragon", which seems to promote some bizarre form of self-cannibalism when taken in conjunction with the message of this ad.
Exactly how must my kids are learning... I mean I know everyone makes mistakes BUT if you're going to send a letter with a ticket out to the parents of honor roll students, shouldn't you proofread it first?
... too grand, in fact!
There was another, smaller sign on the side window, too – let’s hope they openenen soon, so the signs can be removed! The importance of proofreading – illustrated.
