Andrea Doherty: Proofreader

This visualization attempts to explain the writing process. We all start with planning, but when we move to the drafting stage, we diverge as writers and follow our own path, moving back and forth among the components such as coferring, rethinking, revising, editing, proofreading, and more plannning. Sometimes we will publish our work and sometimes we will not.

If we publish on the Web, we then enter into a discussion with readers and may revise our writing further.

Sergei Alexandrovich Yesenin was a Russian lyric poet. He is one of the most popular and well-known Russian poets of the 20th century. One of his narratives was "lyrical evocations of and nostalgia for the village life of his childhood – no idyll, presented in all its rawness, with an implied curse on urbanisation and industrialisation".

Sergei Yesenin was born in village of Konstantinovo in Ryazan County, Ryazan Governorate of the Russian Empire (now Rybnovsky District, Ryazan Oblast) to a peasant family. His father was Alexander Nikitich Yesenin (1873–1931), his mother's name was Tatyana Fyodorovna (nee Titova, 1875–1955).

Both his parents spent most of their time looking for work, father in Moscow, mother in Ryazan, so at age two Sergei was moved to the nearby village Matovo, to join Fyodor Alexeyevich and Natalya Yevtikhiyevna Titovs, his relatively well-off maternal grandparents, who essentially raised him.

The Titovs had three grown-up sons, and it was they who were Yesenin's early years' companions. "My uncles taught me horse-riding and swimming, one of them... even employed me as hound-dog, when going out to the ponds hunting ducks," he later remembered. He started to read aged five, and at nine began to write poetry, inspired originally by chastushkas and folklore, provided mostly by the grandmother whom he also remembered as a highly religious woman who used to take him to every single monastery she chose to visit. He had two younger sisters, Yekaterina (1905–1977), and Alexandra (1911–1981).

In 1904 Yesenin joined the Konstantinovo zemstvo school. In 1909 he graduated from it with an honorary certificate, and went on to study in the local secondary parochial school in Spas-Klepiki. From 1910 onwards, he started to write poetry systematically; eight poems dated that year were later included in his 1925 Collected Works. In all, Yesenin wrote around thirty poems during his school years. He compiled them into what was supposed to be his first book which he titled "Bolnye Dumy" (Free Thoughts) and tried to publish it in 1912 in Ryazan, but failed.

In 1912, with a teacher’s diploma, Yesenin moved to Moscow, where he supported himself working as a proofreader's assistant at Sytin's printing company. The following year he enrolled in Shanyavsky Moscow City People's University to study history and philology as an external student (вольнослушатель), but had to leave it after eighteen months due to lack of funds. In the University he became friends with several aspiring poets, among them Dmitry Semyonovsky, Vasily Nasedkin, Nikolai Kolokolov and Ivan Filipchenko. Yesenin’s first marriage (which lasted three years) was in 1913 to Anna Izryadnova, a co-worker from the publishing house, with whom he had a son, Yuri.

1913 saw Yesenin becoming increasingly interested in Christianity, biblical motives became frequent in his poems. "Grisha, what I am reading at the moment is the Gospel and find a lot of things which for me are new," he wrote to his close childhood friend G. Panfilov. That was also the year when he became involved with the Moscow revolutionary circles: for several months his flat was under secret police surveillance and in September 1913 it was raided and searched.

January 1914, Yesenin's first published poem "Beryoza" (The Birch Tree) appeared in the children's magazine Mirok (Small World). More appearances followed in minor magazines such as Protalinka and Mlechny Put. In December 1914 Yesenin quit work "and gave himself to poetry, writing continually," according to his wife. Around this time he became a member of the Surikov Literary and Music circle.

On 28 December 1925, 30-year-old Yesenin was found dead in his room in the Hotel Angleterre in Leningrad. According to Wolf Ehrlich, Yesenin's final poem, Goodbye my friend, goodbye (До свиданья, друг мой, до свиданья), was written by him the day before he died. Yesenin complained that there was no ink in the room, and he was forced to write with his own blood.

Proofreaders required. For We're Here, visiting Words.

For a product that has "never existed", there is an extraordinary amount of residue to suggest that JIFFY PEANUT BUTTER was once a household staple.

While there are thousands of coupons and local grocers advertising JIFFY PEANUT BUTTER, in truth, if a client is paying for an advert, they'll print whatever is supplied in the space purchased. I endeavoured to include newspaper articles that would have had the support of a team of fact-checkers and proofreaders; after all, the reputation of any paper is built on the veracity of their information.

I also wondered if perhaps JIF was once called JIFFY before being purchased by larger conglomerates, but it seems to have been christened JIF from the very beginning:

"In 1958, the brand rollout in the US involved a heavily publicized house-to-house distribution of free sample jars from special trucks emblazoned with the then JIF mascot, the "JIFaroo", a blue kangaroo. An early slogan was "JIF is never dry; a touch of honey tells you why." Early advertising also emphasized the beveled edge of the jar base, meant to make it easier to get the last bit of JIF out of the corner. For many decades, TV commercials for the product have ended with the tagline, "Choosy mothers choose JIF" and, in the 1990s, "Choosy moms choose JIF." Since 1981, JIF has been the leading peanut butter brand in the United States."

The manufacturers logo from the steam tractor. I just realized that they've got a typo.

Proofread. Enough said.

Cy Twombly would have been greater artist,

if worked in any department

of a large multinational corporation,

and Van Gogh, too.

Every day in the office are made kilograms of art, a new contemporary art, imbued with a thin layer fat of clerk , in rare cases meat of clerk. You just have to break away from The Word and for a moment to open your eyes. In general, a person is very difficult to face the non-art in their lives.

Represented here today - just a small part of what was saved from office space in one and a half years. As you can see, the soul does not die before the end in folds nanoconcrete vaults.

What I propose today - it's fast food from painting. By all subcultures fast food (including metaphysical) - my works is pure semi-finished goods, the materials are all that may come to office space inside the pens, used alone and not once paper, scanner HP, text markers, markers, pencils , glue, proofreaders, colored stickers.

Hanging on the walls foamboards - at the junction of waste, theft, and painting - inspired by the smell of our post-industrial times. It should be noted with regret only one thing: it is hardly possible to plunge into the works until the end, because we have long been there.

All work from the series Office plankton is created in a 15-minute smoking breaks, which are accepted in the infinite spaces of modern post-industrial office corporations in the world where human personality has long been turned into a system, a small gear, which could easily be thrown out and replaced by a new one. Cri de coeur for the loss of particles of the divine personality, the transformation of the individual into a full-fledged man-caused machines - exactly what the audience sees in each of the works.

In view of certain socio cultural triggers, each of the works can not be set apart from the name or without name.

This was dropped off at the office today. It is so very professional, the marketing department is thinking of changing our entire strategy to match this excellent outreach program. I have added the notes of my colleagues to illustrate the truly complex nature of this advertising tour de force.

Remember, proofreading is important. This sign (and a dozen like it) remained in place for well over a month.

Nearly finished correcting the file for Garrett Socol's humorous novel TOOTH DECAY. And yes, the words "crossdresser" and "farm animal" are in the same paragraph...

Inspired by minter, this is an annotated scan of a résumé a person submitted for a position I was filling. Hoooooo boy.

Remember kids, proofreading is important!

One thing is evident when you walk through my house: my family is well acquainted with all things Sensory Processing Disorder. There are plastic balls, and hoola hoops and piles of cushions (the better for jumping in) all over my house.

My oldest son, Danny (who is now 7) was diagnosed with SPD five years ago. This past January, he was also diagnosed with high functioning autism. The last five years have been a crazy, but ultimately rewarding, journey. I have struggled with finding a good occupational therapist, figuring out a balanced schedule and sensory diet, and learning to enjoy Danny for who he is, which is a loving, sweet and uber energetic boy, who is obsessed with Legos. According to Danny, it would be super cool if whenever it rained, Legos would drop from the sky rather than raindrops. After all the money we have spent on those pesky little multicolored blocks, I tend to agree with him.

Charlotte, my 5 year old, was diagnosed with SPD in September. Though I had considered myself something of an SPD expert, Charlotte’s diagnosis has shown me how much more there is for me to learn. Her symptoms are the opposite of Danny’s. So, in a way, I feel like we are starting from scratch with helping Charlotte. Char’s middle name is Fey, which means “enchanted, whimsical, and magical” and that fits Charlotte to a T. She loves art projects and drawing and painting, and her favorite toys are Care Bears. She often bestows upon us Care Bear names, like the day when I was crabby and she called me “Yell-A-Lot Bear.”

My 18-month-old son, Tommy is an adorably happy little boy, who drives me crazy with his antics. The kid never stops and is constantly into everything. I had forgotten how much work toddler boys can be. Only time will tell if Tommy will follow in his siblings’ SPD footsteps. With parents like me and Bil, (who have our own sensory issues) our kids probably never stood a chance.

I stay at home with the kids and keep busy volunteering, writing, and cleaning up messes. I contribute to Hartley’s Life with Three Boys and write at my blog Pancakes Gone Awry. In a previous life, I taught English at high school in Chicago. I hold a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Education. I taught English as a Second Language, writing courses at some community colleges and one university in Chicago, and English at an inner-city high school. While an undergraduate, I worked as a proofreader and editor for my university's Independent Study department, and after college (before grad school) I was an editor at a legal publishing company.

I couldn't resist sharing a couple of things from my birthday trip to Maine, March 15-21, 2014. This is the menu from the table at a sports bar we visited. We had a good giggle, discovering all of the errors in spelling & punctuation. See how many you can find. Sorry for the poor photo quality, from my "stupid" phone!

Target should have hired a proofreader.

The book arrived in the mail today. not the last proofreading copy, or the first one I wrote. It's no longer an idea. I held my book in my hands this afternoon.

i sat on the front porch steps and cried.

Yeay I did it! I have finished my novel. I secretly worked on it quite a bit over the last couple of weeks and today I finished it. Now I only have to do some proofreading and then it’s all done. I also have to do some work on the storyboards, so that if Mr Spielberg wants to make a movie out of it he can look at those, I’m sure that makes things a lot easier for him. My uncle will do the final read-through, if there are still any mistakes left after that, their his fault :-)

If I don’t have to rewrite too much, I will post the first chapter in a couple of days.

Proofreader wanted...............

The last stage that a researcher has to go through, before submitting his dissertation to the review committee, is Dissertation Proofreading. The motive of this stage is to remove the minutest flaws from the dissertation, like the spelling and typo errors, wrong punctuations and spacing, grammar and logical sequence of the structure.

Good books of the week :-)

Careful proofreading two years later.

This book is absolutely fantastic; and disturbing.

Miss Monroe's ghost peeks over your shoulder, if you're paying attention...

I don't know why the blades went all curvy. But then again, it is a helico-pter, so it's reasonable. Anyway, this is us having landed at Bottcher's Gap. From here it was a 45-minute drive in the truck up to Carmel for brunch, then home--and, despite my stubborn willfulness ("I must proofread!"), a nap. I hadn't slept since the night before. I guess the nap, too, was reasonable. (See here for the whole story, if you're interested.)

This photo is useful in two ways. 1) it shows Larisa what Chex are. 2) it illustrates that megacorps don't effing proofread. If these are RICE Chex, then why is it oven toasted CORN cereal? I'll tell you why. It's because they copied and pasted the logo from Corn Chex and forgot to change this part. Woops!

Proofreading involves checking a document for errors.

The proofreader highlights these errors using proofreaders’ marks (also known as proofreading symbols) then passes the document to its originator for corrections.

For what I assume is maybe some sort of grammar assignment...?

Proofread means to find and correct mistakes in text before it is printed or put online.

Hoy amanecía y yo hacía rato que estaba despierta y revisando una traducción. Lo único bueno fue poder ver cómo el sol naranja furioso llenaba de luz el cuarto.

[The early bird...

When the sun rose today, I had been awake and proofreading a translation for a while. The only good thing about it was seeing how the furiously orange sunlight filled the room.]
