Calgary Saddledome.

This picture taken by me in September, and the town was buzzing ready to host the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988. This is a city that has undergone many changes since 1988, and those vacant blocks on 1 ST SE and 13th Avenue are not vacant today. The friendly locals told me 2 things about Calgary's winter that have stuck with me.

I'd noticed that every building had two sets of doors to enter. No sooner would you push through a heavy set of doors and you'd be confronted with another set inside. In Sydney I'm so used to sliding glass doors. The next thing I'd noticed was electrical plugs dangling out of all the cars front grill. Finally this had got the better of me and I asked the 2 questions at a local pub. The answer to seemingly unrelated questions was the same answer - winter.

In winter people wear so many layers that the first set of doors stop all the hot air escaping and allows you to take some layers off before entering. And it gets so cold that oil can freeze in your motor. Man that must be cold. So they keep the engine warm by plugging them in at night!

Houston City Council has approved $25 million towards the rebuilding of 2100 Memorial, an affordable apartment community for seniors owned by the Houston Housing Authority. During Hurricane Harvey, the building was severely damaged, leading to many elderly tenants losing secure and affordable homes. Utilizing Hurricane Harvey disaster recovery funds, the Houston Housing Authority will replace the apartments, using sustainable design and resilient building practices to ensure the safety of residents for the long-term future.
