Participants in CIMMYT's 2011 advanced-level Wheat Improvement and Pathology training program in the field with CIMMYT wheat breeder Karim Ammar (third from right, in white). The course ran from 15 August to 15 September 2011 and was attended by 24 early- to mid-career scientists from North and East Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Its key objective was to improve participants’ knowledge on wheat pathology and the latest wheat breeding technologies, and how these are integrated with other disciplines such as agronomy, statistics, physiology, biotechnology, GIS, and the social sciences. A major focus was to increase participants’ understanding of selection for durable and multiple disease resistance. The program was largely field-oriented, enabling participants to improve teamworking skills and gain confidence in conducting field experiments. Most of the course was conducted at CIMMYT’s El Batán and Toluca stations, but participants also attended the 8th International Symposium on Mycosphaerella and Stagonospora Diseases of Cereals, held in Mexico City during September 11-14.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.
hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers from the Hampton-based 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment and the Portsmouth-based 2nd Battalion, 183rd Cavalry Regiment demonstrate some of their weapons, equipment and vehicles to campers at the ninth annual Virginia National Guard Youth Camp July 23, 2014, at Camp Pendleton in Virginia Beach. The weeklong camp, presented by the Virginia National Guard Family Programs Office, offers the children of Virginia military members a wide variety of outdoor and indoor activities, including swimming and fishing, arts & crafts, classes on flag etiquette, science and the environment, and trips to Ocean Breeze Water Park, the Virginia Aquarium and Busch Gardens. This project is part of the Transformation Projects at the Ars Electronica Kepler's Garden at the JUK. The Fulldome Program of the Digital Arts Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna presents experimental immersive works in collaboration with the University’s Science Visualization Lab, Trans-Media Academie Hellerau, and the transdisciplinary performance company, kondition pluriel. Future Room and Liminal Spaces (re-edited) reveal the artistic potential of the fulldome, as does the 360˚ screening of works by researchers, teachers, and students.
