A key milestone in the UCD Medicine academic programme, our Clinical Commencement 'White Coat' Ceremony 2018 took place on Friday 9th February 2018 at UCD O'Reilly Hall.
The Clinical Commencement Ceremony marks the transition from a predominantly preclinical medical education focus to an intensive period of clinical training. The White Coat symbolise the professional responsibilities that students will assume throughout their clinical life.
During the ceremony, the students were reminded to always maintain professional attitudes and behaviours in work and in relationships with classmates, teachers, patients and the community and to commit to follow ethical and professional standards of the profession.
On 11th December 2019, Abdirizak Farah, a local government worker, speaks to a shop keeper in a market area - significantly upgraded with UNDP support - in Garowe, Puntland, Somalia.
Now in its third five year phase, UNDP’s Joint Programme on Local Governance and Service Delivery (JPLG) is one of the longest running joint UN interventions in Somalia. Through civic engagement between local government and the community, it improves local governance, expands service delivery and identifies community priorities for economic and social development. As a consequence, in Garowe, key infrastructure such as the market and road network have been significantly upgraded (the road widened and tarmacked, and shops added) leading to a substantial increase in accessibility and commerce. The ethos of the JPLG programme is that local people have the best local knowledge and make the best sustainable decisions that fit the local context and meet people’s needs.
According to Abdirizak, “Somalia is a broken country but is in the process of developing. And when any country is making progress, it needs support to make it happen. The JPLG project has provided a lot of things here - not only for this town but across all of Puntland. When you ask the people what JPLG has done, they will tell you what they have benefited significantly and one of the benefits is the market here. Before, this road was so small that you couldn’t even get a single car down the street and now look at it. People come shopping with their family and there are now many more marketplaces like this in town.”
