BREVARD, NC (February 11, 2015) - Students from the VIZ Youth Leadership program joined with leaders from all over Transylvania County during a special program day covering Local Government.
Mayor Jimmy Harris, City Council members Mac Morrow, Maurice Jones, and Ann Hollingsworth, Board of Education members Marty Griffin, Betty Scruggs, and Tawny McCoy were among the elected officials who attended this year. County Manager Jaime Laughter, City Manager Joe Moore, TC Board of Elections Director Karen Brinson, and City of Brevard Planning staff Josh Freeman and Daniel Cobb gave presentations, as well as Dr. Jeff McDaris, Glenda Huggins McCarson, Brian Weaver, and Jeremy Gibbs from the world of education.
This year, county commissioners were missed as they attended a series of workshops for commissioners from all over NC.
The purpose of the day was to inform future leaders about how government works for them, and through their efforts as well. Students learned that about 400 staff make everything happen for city and county government, along with another 100 or more volunteers who sit on citizen boards and commissions. The day culminated in an exercise where students had to advocate for future spending in an education budget, based on limited resources and more than enough good ideas for the funding available.
Some students played the role of board members in this workshop, while fellow students advocated for proposals to fund theoretical school initiatives from the arts to science to early college. Thanks to the leaders who volunteered their time, students learned a vast amount about the inner workings of local institutions.
Students enjoyed an informative lunch with the mayor and city council, superintendent and school board, city and county managers, where they were able to ask their own questions to learn from local leaders firsthand. Thanks VISION and all our participants from local government for helping our students to grow in this important session!
