Birdhouses. Stoneware wheel throne forms with slab and extruded attachments. Metallic black glaze.

I'm sure I have seen this before somewhere; however, as I was walking through the streets in rainy Portland, this one resonated with me. I laughed out loud and went on my way happier for finding it.

I'm easily amused.

Plainfield HS in Connecticut is the latest recipient of a fleet of cameras courtesy of The FPP (and all the folks who have donated to our ongoing program)!

Plainfield teacher Lydia Mackela writes:

"I would really like to take the time to thank you and all of your volunteers SO MUCH for the amazing shipment of cameras. Although we may not be able to start using them this year because of really harsh budget cuts, they will be in full affect next year as we are bringing a darkroom to the school! I graduated from Plainfield High School in 2010 and now I am an educator here and I know how much this means to the kids – especially those who barely have anything special at home. I have the goal of bringing back the positivity and life to this department and with your help its possible! I hope to work with you guys more in the future! Sincerely though, THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Kids with cameras! A GREAT reason to donate to The FPP!

One of the joys we have in being human is in exercising our freedom to choose and to take each case as it comes to us. We are not robots who are forced into behaviors by their programming. We see things; we think about things; and we choose our course of action or beliefs appropriately. And as long as that remains true of us, we will live every day of our lives on one slippery slope or another. There is no reason to fear this.

A program to teach you how to get a DUI in Montezuma, Georgia

image size: 15360*8640 pixels

Some of you may remember this spaceship from LEGO Rock Raiders and here is a small summary how I recreated it:

-back in 2010 ("back in my days...") I watched the intro and outros of the Rock Raider computer game (released in 1999).

If you know the youtube video quality 240p, you know the quality of the only sources, that I used for that ship.

-over the next 10 months: rewatching the videos and trying to build that ship in a program. I ended up using LeoCAD. The only problem: it got slower and slower due to the size, which explains, why I haven't finished the teleporter on the bottom side (patience has its limits^^).

-the first pictures were made in LDView. Over the next years I improved the pictures, that I would release, and one day I found out, that I could use POV-Ray to make good ones (I never used POV-Ray for this ship before, because I thought, that 4GB RAM wouldn't be enough).

and here are some stats:

building time: 2010-2011 / 10 months

length/width/height: 975 / 134 / 133 (measurements in studs)

hull + bridge room: ~57k bricks (yeah, I "only" built those parts)

number of swears, because something didn't work: probably a big number^^

Final thoughts: This project brought me back from my dark ages, because when I first saw that ship and found out, that there wasn't a good fanmade version on the internet, I said to myself "I've got to do it!".

From todays perspective I still think, that the overall shape is quite good. The only problem is, that the ship doesn't have that many details and that the main building technique is "studs on top of each other", which makes it a bit dull or boring looking (but hey: that was released in the year 1999). The project has also its share of mistakes (sometimes due to the program, sometimes due to low quality sources etc.) and if I would do it again, I would buy a computer with lots of memory etc., building it in LDD and then using the LDD to POV Ray converter, because that is probably the faster option in comparison to the original one.

That's the story so far. I also build smaller versions of the L.M.S. Explorer (since it can only go downhill from here^^). The only thing, that I could add to this text is a F.A.Q.:

Q: Would you build that ship in real life?

A: If I had the money (or rather the bricks, because some parts and/or color are quite difficult to get. At least in those quantities), the space and the time: Maybe^^

Q: Did you only make one question for your F.A.Q.?

A: Yeah, because it would take either really long to make good questions or I would only come up with obscure or stupid ones^^
