History of the Lathrop House

The stately Greek Revival home known as the Lathrop house was the residence of Lucian Lathrop an ordained minister and proud descendant of generations of abolitionists. Lathrop was a supporter of the Free Soil Party and protested against the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. While Lucian Lathrop served as an elected State Representative in the Ohio Legislature, he also engaged in the outlawed activities of the Underground Railroad.

The Lathrop house was one of many locations scattered throughout Ohio where men, women and children fleeing slavery found shelter and safety. Harboring runaway slaves was illegal in America after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Despite the consequences, abolitionists continued to assist escaped slaves in their journey to freedom. "Conductors" directed the escapees to the next safe house, barn or business as the fugitive slaves ventured ever northward.

After Lathrop's time, the house continued to serve as a private residence for many civic leaders of Sylvania and northwest Ohio. In fall 2001, the house was sold to a new owner and slated for demolition.

Organizing as a grassroots group, the Friends of The Lathrop House rallied the greater Toledo community to preserve this important piece of American history.

In the summer of 2004, the Lathrop house was moved from its original site to Sylvania's Harroun Park in order to be preserved. Its new location places it on the same ravine system that fleeing slaves used 150 years ago as they traversed the woods from the Harroun barn, another station on the route to the Lathrop house.

As a stop on the Underground Railroad, the Lathrop house represents the brightest of lights in the darkest of times. Its presence is a testament to the simple truth that our greatest strides are made when arm-in-arm, we make them together.

Volunteer Uganda 2014 Teaching and Orphanage program

Volunteer in one of two local orphanages in the Wakiso district, located outside of the city of Kampala. The village orphanage and school not only provide a home and safe haven this is where the children have classes.

Most of these children have lost parents to HIV/Aids. Some have been abandoned, and they know abuse, hunger and fear. The orphanage strives to provide a better future for some of the most vulnerable children in Uganda. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; getting them ready for school, brushing teeth, reading to them. After-school activates you can play games, arrange activities, create arts & crafts projects and share your time and caring with these wonderful children.

Prior experience not necessary, volunteers should have a lot of patience, an open mind and a sense of compassion. The children range in age from 3yrs-13yrs old.
