Hundreds of employees from the supermarket chain, Market Basket, rallied outside of the company’s board of directors meeting convened to decide the fate of its CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas. The Demoulas family has run Market Basket for decades, and has been feuding over the company for nearly as long. Critics, including the CEO's cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas, accuse the leader of fiscal mismanagement; supporters, including a vocal group of Market Basket employees, say Arthur T. has led the company to growth, profits and high worker morale. Following 12 hours of debate Thursday, Arthur T. Demoulas remained president of the Market Basket supermarket chain. The family-owned company’s board adjourned a contentious meeting at 10 p.m. without acting on a motion for Demoulas’s removal. It was unclear whether the shareholders would continue to press for his ouster. The board meets again on Aug. 22. For now, the stalemate ends a bitter feud over the Tewksbury-based supermarket chain, which has remained highly profitable despite near constant infighting for more than 20 years.

Majority of smallholder farmers in Babati are engaged only in farming and have no influence over the management or participation in their product value chains. Such farmers are not well connected to markets, so their production is not well tailored to what the markets need. Africa RISING partners have therefore been implementing specific activities to link these farmers to profitable markets.

A first step to their integration in the value chain was to support these farmers to improve their farming skills through use of improved seeds and fertilizers in their cereal-legumes value chain so that they could produce higher yields of more consistent quality and better suited to the market.

Taking a marketing approach, the team brought the farmers together to strengthen their competitive advantage at the point of sale by improving quality, quantity and time of delivery through collective action. This also enables them to access marketing information readily. A total of eighteen (18) farmer groups have been established/strengthened in ten (10) villages and have been trained on the use of improved seeds and fertilizers to increase production, value chain concept, marketing and agri-business skills and how to use e-soko to access market information. They have also been linked to big maize/pigeonpea/common beans traders in the district like Export Trading Group, Bajwa Farmers and Traders, Monaban, and Mohamed Enterprises Ltd, who can buy their produce at harvesting, or through some contracts arrangements.

A Fistful of Rice: An Unexpected Quest to End Poverty Through Profitability

Author: Vikram Akula

Publication Date: November 9th, 2010

Description: Around the globe, poverty has held too many people in its grip for too long. While microfinance - small loans to impoverished individuals - initially attracted attention in the press, it didn't achieve the scale, scope, and profitability necessary to substantially combat poverty. All that changed with Vikram Akula's creation of SKS Microfinance.

In this highly personal narrative, A Fistful of Rice, Akula reveals how he pieced together the best of both philanthropy and (to his surprise) capitalism to help millions of India's poor transition from paupers to customers to business owners.

As thoughtful as Barack Obama's personal journey in Dreams from My Father, as harrowing as Paul Farmer's battle against infectious disease in Mountains Beyond Mountains, and as gripping as Greg Mortensen's fight for education in Three Cups of Tea, Akula's story shows how traditional business principles can be brought to bear on global problems in new ways.

A Fistful of Rice offers not only inspiration but also lessons for anyone seeking to transform tenacity, creativity, and innovation into potent tools for fighting even the most seemingly intractable human burdens.

Author Bio:

Vikram Akula is the founder and chair of SKS Microfinance. In 2006, Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people. He has received several awards, including the World Economic Young Global Leader (2008), the Schwab Social Entrepreneur of the Year in India (2006), and the Ernst & Young Start-Up Entrepreneur of the Year in India (2006). He has been profiled in media ranging from CNN to the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

I started my business in March 2004, just 2 months before my youngest daughter was born! You, like me, might be considering a career change due to a change in family circumstances, or perhaps you've just had enough of working for someone else and want to work for yourself! Whatever the reason, keep listening, as I am going to help you find out a bit more about yourself and how to make the right career choice to help you get the life you want! Aldus Huxley, the author of Brave New World said "I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself." So, is it time for a change for you? Or more specifically, time for a career change? Perhaps you've been thinking about a job change for a while, but just didn't know where to begin! One of the mistakes we can often make when considering a change of job is to think of ourselves as a job title. Maybe you see yourself as a secretary or IT consultant or marketing manager or retail assistant? If this is how think about yourself, the chances are you are limiting your options! You are most definitely NOT a job title!! You are a unique set of capabilities and personal attributes made up of a lifetime of experience -- your lifetime. You are the sum of the life you have led which means you have developed a whole range of skills and experiences both in and outside of work. So, instead of thinking about yourself as a job title, I'd like you to begin to think about your skills and capabilities. Grab a piece of paper, your IPAD, your smart-phone, your pc whatever device you have and start begin by writing down 3 skills that you believe you excel at. People sometimes find it tricky to write down nice things about themselves. We are taught to be modest, not to boast or show off. Well this is your opportunity to sing your praises! To think about just how good you really are! If you can't identify your own strengths, don't expect anyone else too! Now is the time to be honest with yourself about what you really think you are good at ... and it could be anything! It could be your listening skills, it could be your IT skills, it could be your cake baking skills, your organisation skills or even your ironing skills! Anything goes! So, get ready to pause this recording for a moment or two, whilst you grab your paper, your IPAD whatever and write down the 3 things you excel at...now. So, how did you get on? Did you manage to find 3 things that you excel at? Well I hope so! If not, keep thinking and come back to the list later. The next thing I'd like you to do is reflect back on your achievements. If you're not sure of what an achievement actually is, one dictionary definition says it is the "final accomplishment of something noteworthy, after much effort and often in spite of obstacles and discouragements". So with that in mind get ready to pause this recording and spend a moment or two thinking about your achievements and make a note of 3 things that you are proud of...now. What did you come up with? Did you manage to recall something that stands out in your mind? Something that maybe you didn't think you could, or perhaps never thought you would achieve? Although managing an internet store may deem to be very profitable, it is not a very simple venture. With all the competition in the internet market, a lot of business people are receiving difficulty in earning a substantial income from their business on the web, specially for anyone owners of smaller businesses. If you're finding yourself in a slightly similar situation, then don't give up that easily. There are a good deal of other methods to raise the online sales of your business. That could be through using a good click tracking software.

Wind farming may well be more profitable than sheep, now and into the future, and just maybe it will not be long before it is a commonplace practice on local farms. The Canberra- Goulburn-Yass triangle is believed to offer the best wind in the country, due partly to average temperatures.

Last Wednesday a powerful bevy of politicians and several bus loads of media were hosted to the official launching of the Capital Wind Farm at Bungendore overlooking Lake George on the Osborne family properties. The 'farm' was opened by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, NSW Premier Nathan Rees and Minister for Climate Change, Senator Penny Wong.

Owned by Infigen Energy, the 67 towers were seven years in the making from planning to completion, with an 18 month construction phase.

With a total cost of $400 million the Capital Wind Farm, is the biggest windfarm in NSW and the second biggest in Australia.

It is the largest renewable electricity generator commissioned in NSW since the Snowy Hydro Scheme. The Capital Wind Farm is almost five times the size of any other comparable wind farm in NSW.

Infigen Energy is Australia's leading specialist renewable energy business which owns and operates wind farms in Australia, the Unites States, Germany and France, including 41 wind farms that have a total installed capacity of approximately 2,246M.

The 67 turbines at Bungendore will generate 141 megawatts of power, which could supply one third of Canberra's needs, or 60,000 homes.

The project provided jobs for over 120 people during the construction phase, and will provide ten permanent jobs, and includes three 'wind farm apprentices.' From a pool of 700 applicants, 10 apprentices were selected, and they have been involved in the turbine installation. Turbine manufacturer Suzlon and RMIT worked together to train Australia's first electrical apprentices with a particular focus on wind farms.

The Managing Director of Infigen Energy, Miles George, said "The commissioning of the Capital wind farm is a major milestone for the company and for Australia's renewable energy industry."

Inquiry of the damages of the November Pogrom 1938

Inventory of the synagogues after the November Pogrom of 1938:

Assessment of the structural condition, change of ownership or removal of the building

Inventory of the synagogues after the November pogrom of 1938

Until the 9th November 1938, in Vienna were six architecturally impressive Jewish Temples located, 18 by Temple associations founded association synagogues and 78 houses of prayer. With the assumption of power by the National Socialists these facilities came in ever greater danger. The aggression against the Jewish community in Vienna finally culminating in the November Pogrom of 1938. On the night of 9 to the 10th November synagogues and the associated Jewish religious life were destroyed by brutal violence and arson.

A total of 42 Jewish institutions were destroyed. The fire brigade intervened only when the surrounding buildings were in danger. Thus, the synagogue in Seitenstettengasse 4 in the 1st district, namely, was devastated inside. The exterior has been preserved but because of the adjacent apartment buildings. Buildings that were not destroyed completely were profitably turned to account. The administration of the Nazi regime took care of the ensuring of ritual objects and of the profitable sale of still recyclable remains of the buildings. The relevant act is now safeguarded in the Municipal and Provincial Archives.

Profitable 'utilization'

The synagogue in Holzmeistergasse 12 in the 21st District had been passed with the approval of the conversion in a first aid station to the German Red Cross. The property register (Municipal Department 57) became interested in the acquisition of the synagogue in the Hubergasse 8 in the 16th District for conversion into a gym. For the same object in 1942 applied the Old Catholic Church. On the burnt-out ruins of the house of prayer in the Dollinergasse 3 in 19th District has been established a food factory. The temple in Mödling fell into the property of the City of Vienna.

The temple destructions entailed a large administrative burden, because the rubble of the ruins had to be cleared away. For demolition firms a highly profitable business began. In April 1939, was issued a circular letter from the Reich Governor to the Mayor of the City of Vienna, to all provincial governors and to the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs. It included a secret decree of the Reich Ministry for Ecclesiastical Affairs. It stated that the "Jewish religious associations" themselves would be made responsible by means of "building inspection arrangement" for the removal of the ruins. The building inspection department of the Vienna Magistrate sent in this regard to the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs a list of the condition of the synagogue properties on Viennese district dated December 1939.

Restitution

The restitution of the temple and synagogue properties dragged on from the year 1946 in years of litigation procedures. The Jewish community as legal successor of most associations got back empty lots, where due to lack of money and community members no temples were built anymore. Several plots were sold to private individuals or the city of Vienna. Irreplaceable cultural assets, not least the inventory of the houses of worship have been lost forever.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kainuu

Kainuu (Swedish: Kajanaland) is a region (maakunta / landskap) of Finland. It borders the regions of Northern Ostrobothnia, North Karelia and Northern Savonia. In the east it also borders Russia. Kainuu is known in the ancient Norse sagas as Kvenland.

The administrative capital is Kajaani. Kainuu has around 85,000 inhabitants (2006) and the population is in decline. The nature of Kainuu features forested hills, lakes and vast expanses of uninhabited woods at its most typical — 95% of the land area is forest. The climate is continental.

Original inhabitants of Kainuu were Sami hunter-fisherers. In the 1600s, the Governor General of Finland Per Brahe fostered the population growth of Kainuu by giving a ten year tax exemption to settlers. It was necessary to populate Kainuu with Finnish farmers because the area was threatened from the east by the Russians. The immigrants to Kainuu were mainly from Savo and because of that the Kainuu dialect is very close to the Savo dialect.[1]

Currently the population is in decline mainly because the traditional livelihood is agriculture which is not very profitable any more in that region.

The economy of Kainuu is also driven by the lumber industry, which employs 8% of the workforce in the region.[2] In addition, Kainuu Brigade, a base of the Finnish Defence Forces, is located near Kajaani.

Suomi

Kainuu (ruots. Kajanaland) on Suomen maakunta, joka sijaitsee Pohjois-Suomessa. Maakuntakeskus on Kajaani. Maakunnan suurin järvi on Oulujärvi (pinta-ala 893 km²) ja korkein kohta Hyrynsalmen Iso Tuomivaara, joka yltää 387 metrin korkeuteen merenpinnasta.

Kainuuta ympäröivät seuraavat maakunnat: Pohjois-Pohjanmaa lännessä ja pohjoisessa ja Pohjois-Savo ja Pohjois-Karjala etelässä. Idässä maakunta rajoittuu Venäjään.

Kainuun maakunnan pinta-ala oli 2010-01-01 1. tammikuuta 2010 24 452,85 km², josta maa-alueita on 21 503,78 km² ja sisävesiä 2 949,07 km².[1] Maakunnan väkiluku oli 2010-02-28 28. helmikuuta 2010 82 619 henkeä.[2] Kainuun luonto on tyypillisimmillään vaaroja (metsäpeitteisiä tuntureita), järviä ja laajoja asumattomia metsäalueita. Kainuun maapinta-alasta 80 prosenttia on metsää. Ilmasto on mantereinen.

Kainuun kulttuuri kuuluu laajempaan itäsuomalaiseen kulttuuriperintöön ja kainuun murre pohjautuu savon- ja karjalan murteisiin.

Pressure on boom and profitability will persist for housing finance businesses thanks to heightened competition from banks and better credit score costs, warns Ambit Capital.

pixar IS computer animation. a concept in the 70s which then became an experiment in the 80s, only to evolve as a profitable tool for national advertisements and special effects in films during the early 90s and THEN become such a gigantic entity in the 00s that without it, an established behemoth of a company that rode high on animation for over 75 years old, could collapse to its knees.

Pixar had three things going for it...momentum, creativity, and talent. Bob Iger undoubtedly made one of the most incredible executive decisions in the company's history by buying out the company and having it infuse it into the disney identity. Buzz Lightyear has in many ways overshadowed Mickey himself. Its a real generation shift we are witnessing, 3D animation has completely wiped out hand-drawn animation not so much as an artform, but as a financial and marketing tool. in the last 10 years, name me a completely hand-drawn animated film that's grossed 100 million plus in the theaters..i can only think of one. Every Pixar full-length feature release has grossed at least 300 million EACH in the US alone. It's a track record not even Steven Speilberg or Jerry Bruckheimer could match.

With so much success Pixar built upon itself, its really unbelievable to see that Disney, one of the 5 major media companies in the world was there to leech off of that success just by being it's distributor. Eisner, at the time, had no idea what kind of monster he ways dealing with; his complacency towards a change in the industry got the best of him. Just because Disney symbolizes everything family doesn't mean it can NEVER fail. Disney was Goliath in family entertainment. But if Disney parted ways with Pixar, it would've been the first domino to fall. To this day I really believe that if Eisner knew he was tango-ing with an emerging David, and made the right decision then, he'd still be in that seat as a hero dressed in Buzz Lightyear gear.

So do I think Pixar saved Disney? Yes. Did it save the parks? yes it did. Did it save the integrity of what disney's empire is built on? yes.

but like every rollercoaster its only a matter of time for Pixar to go downhill. and that's what worries me about Cars 2. Isn't making a sequel to one of the weaker stories in your arsenal a sign that, maybe, just maybe, Pixar is running out of steam?

July 18, 2013. Andover, MA.

St Peter and St Paul, Exton, Rutland

I had completed my quest to cycle around all the churches of north Rutland between Essendine, the most easterly point in the county, and Whissendine, the most westerly. I had turned back to the east, taking in the churches at Ashwell and Cottesmore. And now, before heading back into Stamford, which was now barely ten miles off, I had a small matter of one of England's most spectacular churches to deal with. The road led south along the side of the vast Exton Hall estate, and along its southern edge, the deep woods full of thickly set trees and silence. I had to turn north before I at last reached a track which led into the estate and across a cattle grid to the parish church.

This is a big church, but even so the body of the church is overshadowed by the vast tower. Like not-far-off Fotheringhay and Lowick, this has an octagonal stone lantern set at the top of a square tower, but here that is surmounted further by a tall stone spire. Because the church is set in the grounds of the Hall, and the grounds are surrounded by thick woodland, you can only see this amazing tower if you are actually beside it, a remarkable thought. Further, bear in mind that the Earls of Gainsborough are a Catholic family, so they have their own private chapel beside the Hall.

But they are remembered here, and how. As Pevsner says, there are few churches in England in which English sculpture from the C16 to the C18 can be studied so profitably and enjoyed so much as at Exton. In fact, the earliest memorial here is from the late 14th Century, and then every century and every artistic period has an effigy memorial to offer. The biggest, best and most famous is the 1686 memorial by Grinling Gibbons to the third Viscount Campden. It is so huge that even in this vast space it fits awkwardly into a transept. Indeed, it is hard to imagine any church space into which it might easily fit, even a cathedral. And yet it is delightfully full of detail. All these memorials in the aisles and transepts rather overshadow the chancel, which in any other church would be considered splendid. This kind of church isn't necessarily to everyone's taste, least of all mine, but it was all very impressive.

Seven miles to Stamford. It was a quarter to four, my train left at five, so I put my head down and hurtled along the long, lonely road past Tickencote, under the A1 and into the suburbs of Stamford to give myself time to stop at Great Casterton on the way in.
