I was busy in Berkeley on the first Earth Day in 1970.
I had a regular balloon guy i could count on for political events, usually carried or released at City Hall, San Francisco.
This time, i needed two blue balloons about four feet wide. He showed up right on time.
My prep was to be able to ‘draw the world’ on a balloon in about one minute. ( India was just a triangle, of course. * )
So, we blew up the first balloon with helium and i drew in the continents in green and brown for the land and white for ice.
We put a string on the balloon and handed it off the first person in the crowd that reached for it.
But, he wasn’t used to where it was above his head and he walked it under a street sign and popped it in less than five seconds.
But we had TWO blue balloons.
We started over... blew it up with helium, drew the world on it and handed it off.
A lot of people in the crowd had gasped when they saw it pop. It’s chances of being protected were much better.
And it lasted throughout the whole parade, and was the ONLY huge balloon, so it became the icon of the parade.

There was a booklet printed about the parade that used the crowd with the balloon on the cover. I never had a copy and can’t find it, now.

More on painting the World on the giant balloon-
I look at the world now and imagine that a way to establish the relationship of North to South America would be to draw an ‘S’ curve, starting along the California Coast, sweeping down and across to the Eastern Coast of South America. Then put a brush stroke in the center of the S to mark the Yucatan and Panama. Then, the rest of America would fall into place.
Which is to say, it would fall into place if you practiced it over and over at home.
The final trick was to somehow, go from the flat view on paper to the big, ungainly sphere. I suppose that was done on the round surface by starting with a big, clarifying ‘X’ at the North and South poles of the balloon.
The legs of the X would start at Greenwich, then Siberia, then the mid Pacific, then the United States. And using the Equator would be a big help.
But the lines couldn’t show.:
There were no lines on Earth Day.
We were all getting impressed by the first partial photos of the Earth, high enough to show the curvature with not a line in sight. And then we got “The Blue Marble”, two years later.:

Ordering a second balloon as a stand-by was my standard practice, but Earth Day was the only time that I needed the second one.

I’ve been kind of blocked from using Photoshop, lately, so i used the Apple Pen with Procreate. I was coached on Procreate by Pete, who is really good at it.
The visible side of the balloon is newly drawn; the ghostly far side is from D&L TOYS.
The real balloon was not translucent. You couldn’t see through to the other side.

alephks: I was kinda bored.. Sketched in Sketchbook Pro and colored in Procreate.
For about 12 years I operated a small, sewing accessory workroom, where I worked with designers and my personal customers creating throw pillows, table runners, decorative throws, tapestries, tassels, fringes, and Christmas stockings.
The hardest part of this kind of business for most people is knowing how to design the items, since each fabric lends itself to unique treatments, and there aren't patterns available for everything the customers envision, (or YOU do,) so you have to figure it out every single time. For me that was the easy part! the sewing itself was the chore for me! I liked the finished products, but what I didn't like about it was the DNA that I donated every time I ran a needle through my finger, or stuck myself with a pin! One time, a pair of very sharp, seamstress shears slipped off my table, landing point first into my foot. No one would think being in the home decor industry would be dangerous, but it has its hazards!
The fun part for me was always doing the designs, which I would usually sketch out before I attempted to create them. If I could "see" it in my mind, I knew I could figure out how to make it. Designers used me as a brain stormer, and unfortunately, my cut was never proportionate to the creations they received, and sometimes ended up being free!
This pillow was one of my most popular designs. More of those fabrics were sold by the fabric store I worked in during the day than almost any others in the nearly 17 years I was there! I would seldom re-create other designs, but this particular one was such a hit that I did other shaped envelope designs like this in many fabrics, but this was by far the most duplicated.
There's a bit of engineering involved in making a quality throw pillow. They aren't square at all, at least not until they're stuffed! It always amazed me how much garbage was being produced out there, often for more money than I would charge, and what people would settle for, OR pay for if they didn't know any better!
One of my customers came to me one day and asked what I would charge to make her a pillow similar to this one. I told her the labor would be about $30- $35. She started chuckling, and told me that her designer, who was related to her by marriage, was going to charge her $140 for it! Then I started chuckling as I asked her if she knew who made the designer's pillows for her; it was ME! Needless to say, she gave me the job directly. So, lesson learned...if you want quality things, sometimes skipping the middle man will drop your rates enormously.
I still have my business license, but no longer have been doing sewing as my line of work. I'm kind of burned out. You never know, though. I've been contemplating selling kits online to teach people to do what I do, including basic patterns and instructions. With the economy as it is, people are attempting to do things themselves, not pay a workroom to do it! It's a thought. When you figure that the average custom pillow costs about $100 to have made, saving $35 a pop is a big help, and can let people have a much more beautiful home for less. In any case, I prefer not actually sewing the blame thangs myself anymore!

This is just me trying something new in Procreate. While I'd still rather make marks on paper, I'm constantly surprised at how robust Procreate is. The marks are staggeringly similar to the marks I might make using traditional tools. Oh, and Apple Pencil is the bee's knees!
A homage to one of my favorite treats of all time. I hope they resurrect them. Created in Procreate for iPad.
