I took a pencil sketch and layered it in Photoshop with lots of different photos, then exported to procreate to play around.

iPad, procreate, pogo connect

Lately, I've been experimenting with an app called Procreate on my new iPad Pro and made this illustration of a coureur des bois - literally 'a runner of the forests'. These were the early independent fur traders in New France who explored the vast wilderness in small canoes from around 1640 to 1710. From 1681 onward, however, the fur trade become regulated and only licensed merchants (called voyageurs) were given monopolies and operated with large 10 meter transportation canoes which required ten paddlers or more. So life for a coureur des bois in this later period was not only arduous but also illegal. To succeed, they had to be excellent canoeists, hunters, traders, and explorers with the ability to keep strong relations with the Algonquin, Huron and Iroquois tribes in the areas that they operated. Most coureur des bois would leave Montreal after the ice melted and paddle up the Ottawa River westward and northward where the best furs could be found.

Yet another exploration using procreate and fingerpainted. Somehow the effects for these 2 pieces is somewhat solemn and stark. Not sure why exactly.
