Invented by Thomas Nelson. Edinburgh 1850. Exhibited at the Great Exhibition, London. 1851.
Its success lay in the method of holding the semicircular printing plate securely on the machine. It could produce 10.000 double-sided printed sheet per hour. The print quality was sub-standard for book printing.
From the Special Collections Library shoot of the Mid-Week Marauders. There is lots of this type of equipment, books and type too. A very interesting venue according to the group present. Access to the presses area is available by asking at the desk in the library area. The folks there just asked that one be patient as they are not always fully staffed.

In 1995, a new state of the art printing plant was commissioned at Flinders Street West. It was completed in September 1997 at a total cost of $28 million. The Flinders West Print Centre prints the Townsville Bulletin, Courier Mail and The Australian for distribution in the area north of Mackay and west to Mount Isa. It is the biggest single press line in the News Ltd group and the busiest, with an operational capacity of 50,000 copies per hour.
This is the printing press I use at the Australian Print Workshop. It is old and very difficult to pull the prints through, but I love it!

Sissinghurst Castle.
This Minerva Platen printing press was given as a housewarming present to Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson when they purchased Sissinghurst in 1930. It was from Leonard and Virginia Woolf, who owned the Hogarth Press publishing house.
I took this in April, 2005. Kevin was assisting his dad (Harold E Hansen) with a large print on a stone lithograph press.
The stone was treated with a mixture of acid and gum arabic, etching the portions of the stone that were not protected by the grease-based image. When the stone was subsequently moistened, these etched areas retained water; an oil-based ink could then be applied and would be repelled by the water, sticking only to the original drawing. The ink would finally be transferred to a blank paper sheet, producing a printed page. (Wikipedia)
The home of the Chicago Tribune was the Freedom Center. It was a huge distribution and printing press for the newspaper. It was demolished to built the new Chicago Bally's casino. It was an amazing building to explore and take photos. I'll be posting also many photos before the demolition soon

This large old-style bathroom is down the stairs - as can be seen in the mirror at top right - from the main locker room. Several sinks had "out of order" signs on them and one urinal had been ripped from the wall and placed inside a stall. The showers still had wet stains on the floor. The purple, mostly dead flourescent light cast eerie shadow into the room from the irregularly shaped fixtures. Web versions
