When printing was as much an art form as a technology.

Or, the day the people at the Print Shop at History San José set me and my camera loose in their type storage cabinets.

Having had some experience with off-set printing in the past, it was interesting to see how they used to do it.

The appearance of this peaceful-looking and beautiful snow-capped mountain peak in the Pacific Northwest deceived me. I knew that Mount Rainier was the highest peak in the state of Washington. What I didn't realize, however, is that it is "considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list," (according to Wikipedia). As such, if it were to irrupt again, it would threaten the entire Puyallup River valley because of its lahar-hazard zones. (And to think that I camped in the forest on a mountain right next to it one night...ha!!!)

During my education I went twice on a week-long study trip to Paris with the class. The first trip was in 1974.

I had my first SLR camera , an Asahi Pentax SP II which I bought second hand from my long time and hardly saved pocket money, and only one slide film roll with 36 exposures with me! My pocket money wasn't enough for more.

The film material has suffered a lot over the years, but I only have a small selection here for those friends who are interested in seeing what it was like in Paris at the time.

I took the photo with an analogue Asahi Pentax SP II (M42) camera and slide film, then scanned with a Nikon Coolscan LS 40ED film scanner

DE:

The fruit and husk of a physalis plant f22 / ISO 200 / 1 sec - the fruit is roughly the size of a cherry tomato and in this image it is backlight by a small flashlight hidden by the POV.

This is an image from last year that I re-processed in B&W for the Capture Oakville photo contest. The final juried selections were based physical prints and 2 of my entries made it to this stage (Iridescent Leaf was my other shot).

I hardly ever make prints of my images and I highly recommend taking some of your favourite shots and getting them printed at a good size (in this case 16"x20" prints). It is a very different experience seeing them physically in print. Your local camera club or camera store can probably recommend a quality print shop to make the prints (avoid the big box in-store labs).

This shot won a honorable mention in the B&W category and both prints are on display at the gallery of a local cultural centre along with 80 other photographs from the competition.

Overall it was a great experience - I learned a lot about the printing process and it forced me to look over my work for the past year with a critical eye.

I have no idea how old this paper might be. It took a very long development time before the image came up, maybe 45 minutes.

Fun with 3D printing! Here's a stick puzzle made up of 30 identical sticks - each piece represents an edge of a dodecahedron which have been rotated by a constant angle. George Hart wrote a great paper about how to design these models: archive.bridgesmathart.org/2011/bridges2011-357.pdf
