As we redesign the giant printer, we're considering what tools we can use to make it possible. Rapid prototyping via CNC allows us to quickly and easily iterate and design new parts and functionality, test it, and re-design again. This is the newest design, using a multiple pulley system which controls the speed of the string holding up the printer head... more to come soon!
Satchmo is in love with my new printer. I have never had a printer at home before and he is fascinated by the noises it makes and the moving parts he can see inside.

This laser printer prints from multiple rolls up to about 42 inches wide. It's fast- printing at a rate of about 1 foot per second... unlimited length. I had the luck of trying to roll a 20 foot print by hand as it came out... not an easy task.
The Vivitar Slide Printer is a plastic box (1970s - 1990s) that was used to transfer a slide to a Polaroid print. The unit I have looks to be a late 80's / early 90s model. Insert the slide, hit the button and "poof" - image is flashed to the "Polaroid back" on top.
I used a Kodachrome 200 slide and Fujifilm FP-100c Instant Film. All of my prints were overexposed (on every exposure setting). Frustrated, I started inserting ND gels in-between the slide.

Somehow the printer managed to print on one of the metal guides. I don't know why this happened, but I do know it printed only one word. I think it's trying to tell me something.

manual cloth printing is a traditional trade here in farrukhabad which is totally labour intensive..this is inside a cloth printing factory where a printer is printing on a screen with shadows from the window criss crossing him..!
The Powell River Public Library was very nice. In addition to looking quite sharp in general they had this sweet-looking little tech lab with a big 3D printer busily working away at the moment we were looking.
While staff can swipe credit cards through their belt packs, they puzzle many customers by magicing till receipts out of fresh air.
But like all sleight of hands, there's an explanation. The hidden printer.

People have asked me about cost of material, 1kg of plastic filament is about $40, this item used 17g of material, or about 68¢ worth. So not free, but pretty cheap.
Print time on this was about an hour. If I upgrade a few parts on the printer, I should be able to produce prints faster, and with less errors.

This jungle gym, with its many allusions to the rotary printing press, is located within the former estate of the man who patented the first such press, Richard March Hoe. (The Hoe family was apparently fond of cheery nomenclature: Richard's house was named Brightside, while his brother Peter resided nearby in the still-standing Sunnyslope — which, as we've seen, is currently home to an African Methodist Episcopal church by the name of Bright Temple.)
Hoe's printing prowess also left its mark on the local street grid. According to the Parks Department:
"In 1904, a portion of the estate was divided into a series of city streets which were named after historic printers. Guttenberg Street (sic), named for Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the early 15th century printing press, was renamed East 165th Street in 1911. Aldus Street is named for Aldo Manuzio, a late 15th century Italian printer and editor who used the new printing press to revive dozens of Latin and Greek classics, and published contemporary writers such as Erasmus. Hoe Avenue refers to Richard March Hoe whose rotary printing press of the 19th century built upon the inventions of Gutenberg and Manuzio."
