Women Deliver 2023 - Side Event -
Preventing Violence against Women: From Evidence to Action: The event is co-organized by the World Health Organization and UN Women to advance commitments to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls as part of the Generation Equality Forum's Gender-Based Violence Action Coalition. Our panel speakers will share their experiences and insights on how to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls, using evidence-based strategies and tools. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and network with like-minded individuals, all working towards a common goal of ending violence against women and girls and creating a safer world for all.

As the global champion for women and girls, UN women will strongly collaborate with Women Deliver 2023 Global Conference, bringing together civil society and women’s rights activists; along with the next generations of changemakers, including youth and visionaries who were instrumental in building and driving the momentum of Generation Equality.
In 2023, Women Deliver Conference is taking place coinciding with the Midpoint Moment of Generation Equality – which will be held in September 2024 in New York. Convened by UN Women, the Generation Equality Forum (GEF) is an unprecedented global effort to accelerate investment and implementation on gender equality in today's context of stalled progress and regression. By bringing together diverse stakeholders from every part of society, Generation Equality aims to disrupt inaction, drive political will and accountability, and ensure that the bold ambitions of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action on women’s rights are finally implemented, and the Sustainable Development Goals are achieved, leaving no one behind.
Despite some progress, real change has been slow. Multiple obstacles remain unchanged in law and in culture. As a result, women continue to be discriminated against, their contributions are undervalued, they continue to work more, earn less, have fewer choices, and experience multiple forms of violence at home and in public spaces.
The Women Deliver 2023 Global Conference will also be the scenario for UN Women and UNDP to launch the experimental twin indices: Global Gender Parity Index (GGPI) and the Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI) which provide a multidimensional measurement framework to guide national and international policy action, research and advocacy to diagnose the root causes of structural gender inequality, identify game-changers and spur further commitments. The WEI measures women’s power and freedoms to make choices and seize opportunities in life. The GGPI evaluates the status of women relative to men and exposes some of the remaining gaps in achieving parity between women and men.

Fire Service works with local businesses to prevent accidental drownings
Bars, restaurants and businesses along Ipswich’s Waterfront have today (29 August 2019) attended awareness training in the event of anyone falling into water.
As part of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service prevention work, these waterside businesses have been supplied with a safety throw line to keep at their premises. This is a small bag containing a floating line which can be deployed very quickly and easily in the event of someone falling into the water around the marina.
Staff were given training on how to effectively operate the new equipment, supported by the local Coastguard from Felixstowe and Holbrook, which could be the first action in saving someone’s life.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Station Commander, Phil Geeson, said:
“I’m really pleased to see local businesses taking an interest in helping to keep their customers and local visitors safe. Should someone fall into the water, these safety lines could help a passer-by make a positive contribution to casualty survival until the emergency services arrive.
“As a service, our firefighters are highly trained and available to respond to a whole range of emergency incidents, including water rescues. We also have a team of officers carrying out our Prevention work supported by operational crews helping to reduce risk in our community.”
In 2018, 263 people lost their lives in accidental drownings in the UK, the majority being male fatalities (87%). Nearly two people every week lost their lives when walking or running by water.
Dan Johnson from Pizza Express, who attended the session with some of his staff, said:
“It’s been really helpful, it’s always good to be able to help anyone if they do get into trouble. I haven’t seen it happen very often but it’s nice to have the back up and it was good training.”
If you see anyone in difficulty in the water, put your own safety first and do not jump in – shout for help and get someone to call 999.

(OKLAHOMA CITY) – On Dec. 1, Sunbeam Family Services partnered with local law enforcement to bring holiday joy and toys to 291 grandfamilies through the 18th annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Holiday Program. There was a special appearance by Santa, who handed out presents to 633 grandchildren. Grandfamilies also had their family photo taken and received a ham, stockings, gas cards and more.
This holiday program was made possible by generous support from the Oklahoma City Police Department, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, TRIAD and the Oklahoma Recyclers Association, who truly embrace the giving spirit by raising donations to provide holiday gifts to grandfamilies.
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program supports Oklahomans raising their grandchildren without the presence of parents in the home. The majority of grandfamilies receive no support from the biological parents nor the state. This program is open to grandparents living in Oklahoma, Cleveland, Canadian and Logan counties.

Toxic chemicals are used around the world for many legitimate and peaceful applications, but they may also be used for purposes that are prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention. The OPCW's verification regime works to prevent the diversion of toxic chemicals for non-peaceful purposes.
OPCW inspectors visit the facilities where these chemicals are produced, processed, or consumed to ensure that the declarations from Member States are complete and accurate. These routine inspections are cooperative events—the inspection teams are concerned with verifying the contents of declarations and do not adopt an investigative approach.

Mosques with minarets in Vienna? A town commission, which wanted to prevent this - as in Carinthia - could find this a hard nut to crack in Vienna. Because the townscape of the federal capital already contains numerous elements, which were strongly influenced by the Islamic culture. It's not all about buildings like the Islamic Center on Hubertusdamm - Vienna's only structurally recognizable mosque. Even classical Viennese architecture has Islamic features.
The most well-known example is the Saint Charles' Church: with its dome and the two pillars, at first glance, it can actually be held for a Turkish mosque. And this is not so unintentional, explains Claudius Caravias in his latest book "The Mosque on the (very small river) Vienna": Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach was inspired by, among other things, the Suleiman Mosque in Constantinople, today's Istanbul.
Only at second glance does it become apparent that the two belfries are modeled after the Trajan's Column in Rome, and that the portico of the colonnade quotes the Pantheon as well as St. Peter's Basilica. This architectural mixture can be understood, above all, from the wish of the patron Emperor Karl VI, that Vienna, as the residence of the Roman-German emperor, becomes the third Rome besides Western and Eastern Rome (Constantinople) - and the church a symbol of it.
