Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014
Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.
Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

There is a difference between what is live fish, fresh fish and fish that the local eat. Live fish is defined as still alive and swimming, fresh fish is dead but kept in ice. Even though Bali is an island, Balinese typically do not fish due to their superstitious belief that the seas are haunted by evil spirits. Live fish produce is brought in by mostly Javanese and the Fish Market is normally on the beach. As there are little refridgeration, fish tend to spoil fast. So what happens is that the leftover fish are normally steamed and sold to locals in the in-land markets. These steamed fish are steamed over and over again to prevent rotting each day. Fish is also more expensive and therefore reserve for special occasions only. (Ubud Market, Bali)
Secretary Walker joined Governor Carney, Attorney General Kathleen Jennings, Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy, and DHSS' newly announced Director of Group Violence Intervention Bobby Cummings in announcing their shared commitment to launch a social services-based approach to prevent and reduce gun violence in Wilmington.
State of Delaware social service agencies will partner with law enforcement to prevent gun violence in the City of Wilmington under a Group Violence Intervention (GVI) project announced by state and city leaders on July 30 in Freedom Plaza.
"In order for any city to be successful, it also needs to be safe," Governor Carney said in announcing Cummings' appointment to the Department of Health and Social Services.
Secretary Walker said Cummings will have the resources and the staffing support to help meet the needs of a small number of people in Wilmington who are at a very high risk for being victims of violence or the perpetrators. The National Network for Safe Communities at John Jay College, led by professor David Kennedy, will provide technical assistance.
"As elected and appointed leaders ... we all have a responsibility to alter the cycle of poverty, trauma and violence in order to keep individuals and families safe and healthy," Secretary Walker said. Evidence shows that gun violence is concentrated among a small number of people.
The GVI strategy is intended to help these high-risk individuals avoid involvement in the criminal justice system, keep them safe, stabilize their lives, and create accountability for violence. DHSS, the Delaware Department of Correction, and the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth & Their Families are among the agencies that will provide intervention services under the partnership.
Attorney General Jennings said the Group Violence Intervention project is a "meaningful alternative to violence." But her office stands ready to continue to hold people accountable who commit gun violence instead of embracing the support offered to them.
Kennedy said a similar approach in Oakland, Calif., has reduced shootings and arrests by 50 percent each. He said the percentage of high-risk population is less than 1/2 of 1%. "In a place like Wilmington, that's down to dozens of high-risk people," he said.
As the former Police Chief in Wilmington, Cummings said that "one of the things that can help reduce the violence in our streets is by meeting people's basic needs -- for food, health care, child care, employment and housing."

I thought I was photographing a chirping male cricket. I realized there was another cricket (female) when I post processed the images on my laptop! I think the male was playing a courting song and the female was on top of the male. Night find, Selangor, Malaysia.
Info from Nancy Oecanthinancy: The male raises his wings to sing and to expose the metanotal gland. The female sips from the gland to get her in position for the male to transfer a spermatophore. He then keeps the gland exposed so she will continue to sip from it - and thus prevent her from removing the spermatophore too early.

Brent Woods farm
NRCS agronomist Eric Barsness, Brookings, SD, and district conservationist Brent Woods, Parkston, SD, examine Woods’ cover crop mix in September 2019. Woods grazed this biomass in the fall, then seeded it back to cover crops to take up moisture to aid spring planting. Woods used a mix of oats, millet, forage sorghum, radishes, brassica hybrids, and sunflowers.
2019 lessons learned from this type of Prevented Plant field:
•A good scenario for soil microbial and livestock feeding. (Grazing preferred over forage removal)
•Grazing provides excellent results with initiation after 6-8-inches of cover crop growth. Overgrazing causes exposed soil due to a lack of regrowth. Grazing can provide savings toward hay/forage feeding and harvest costs. Avoid grazing excessively wet soils. When soils begin to thaw, do not graze until soil frost dissipates and soil moisture lowers.
•Soil health is greatly improved compared to bare soil with weeds, but not as great as non-grazed, living cover crops. Grazing should increase nutrient cycling of plant nutrients back to the soil from manure; check with a soil test before the following year’s crop.
•Baled cover crops were not successful because species in cover crop mixes remained too wet to bale.

It’s a social café offering free hot meals, a food pantry and support for those in need.
Background info
* Café 1668 in Inverness is a social café offering free hot meals, a food pantry and support for those in need.
It’s run by Highland Third Sector Interface and within the team there’s a support worker on hand to connect people to other services.
The café is geared to supporting vulnerable people to help them get their lives back on track, whether they’re experiencing challenges such as poverty, alcohol and drug problems and homelessness.
Through early intervention and support it can also help prevent people from going into the justice system.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays it offers free lunches and hot drinks and on other days operates as a general café for the public.
There’s a food pantry by the entrance, supported by local supermarkets and individuals, where people are able to pop by and pick up what they need.
And there’s also a computer room with free internet access. For some, the café offers the chance to chat to others in an inclusive setting and improves their wellbeing.
Volunteers also help out alongside staff.

Each team must prevent the destruction of its Fort and the theft of its Flag by defeating the other team.
The rules of battle are simple:
* The first rule of UTCFB is: You aren't allowed to fuck up anybody but yourself.
* Battle consists of tackling and grappling; the goal is to pin someone's shoulders to the ground for a 3-count.
o A 3-count is counting to three; it does not necessarily mean three whole seconds.
o Pinning someone only counts when they're face-up; pinning someone's shoulders to the ground when they're facedown is both inadvisable and illegal.
* Once someone is pinned, they must go to the penalty box for a count of 120.
o A 120-count is counting to 120; it does not necessarily mean two whole minutes.
o When the 120-count is done, the combatant must first touch their own Fort, or the remains thereof, to be considered back in play.
* There is no punching, kicking, slapping, biting, or anything else unpleasant allowed.
o A rear naked choke hold, for instance, is dangerous and illegal; someone caught in such a maneuver should tap their assailant's forearm, and their assailant should release immediately.
* No outside weapons are allowed.
* Double-teaming, triple-teaming, or an all-team dogpile are completely permitted strategies as long as nobody gets seriously hurt.
* Battle should be self-regulating; all combatants are expected to behave with honor and dignity.

Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) prevent viral replication by supplying a non-functional nucleoside (a 'wrong building block') during the synthesis of a DNA copy from the RNA strand. (NRTIs) have to be metabolised in the body before the onset of action.

While activities to counter violent extremism can reduce threats temporarily, preventive activities are key to impeding violent extremist ideologies in the medium and long run. This side event showcases UNESCO’s approach to preventing violent extremism through education (PVE-E), the evidence on PVE-E effectiveness, and how the approach can be implemented at the country level.

Latinas make up one in five women in the US, and despite barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential, are making the US a stronger and more prosperous nation. Today, Latinas are attending college at higher rates than ever, are contributing to a surge in the number of Latino-owned business in this country (Latina-owned firms grew by 137% between 2007 and 2016) and are increasingly becoming politically active. Simply put, Latinas are becoming a powerful force in the United States and have the potential to make greater impact with more equitable access to social and economic mobility.
