Title from a Radiohead song.... but also due to the fact that this totem pole does not serve the purpose it did in the past.
She's one of the dancers in the
great Hollywood Pin-Up Girls dance
troupe, who I happily watched perform
last night at the historic El Cid nightclub
on Sunset Boulevard.
The girls do Bob Fosse-inspired sexy
burlesque-styled dances to propulsive,
mostly old music. There's a lot of erotic
energy and beautiful motion and smiles
and vibrant spirit.
Elizabeth was my favorite of the group -
even when she was behind some of the
others, she exuded genuine star-power. I took
many photos of the whole troupe, and many of
Elizabeth, who I also photographed backstage -
and I got a lovely one on which this one is based
showing her whole body in motion. But when I
zoomed in mostly on her face, I saw this
essence of motion and beauty, and it
exemplified the spirit
of the night.
At one point during our walk in the woods, I took this panoramic shot of a sweeping turn in the trail that symbolizes for me the circular, questioning nature of my father-in-law, who is suffering from a degenerative memory disorder, mostly likely Alzheimer's Disease.
Bill asks the same questions over and over again, but there's an intriguing quality to them, and it is this: they all pertain to the present tense.
Where is? What is? Who is?
He does not fear for the future. He does not regret the past. He just wants to know about the now.
Bill is not the man I've known, but he is still the man I admire.
I'm grateful for the time I'm spending with my father-in-law. :)

La prima canzone guarda caso è stata “Given To Fly”.
There’re colors in the streets… Green, White and Red”. Eddie ha davvero un senso del pubblico e dello show fuori dal mondo, incredibile la sua comunicatività.
Do you see the way that tree bends?
Does it inspire?
Leanin' out to catch the sun's ray
A lesson to be applied
Are you getting something out of this?
All encompassing trip
You can spend your time alone
Redigesting past regrets, Oh
Or you can, come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, Oh
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense
Have you ideas on how this life ends?
Checked your hands and studied the lines?
Have you the belief that the road ahead
Ascends off into the light?
Seems that needlessly it's gettin' harder
To find an approach and a way to live
Are we gettin' something out of this
All encompassing trip
You can spend your time alone
Redigesting past regrets, Oh
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, Oh
Ah, makes much more sense to live in the present tense
"just a deck of cards
& a jug of wine
and a woman's lies
make a life like mine.
oh, the day we met,
i went astray,
i started rollin' down
that lost highway."
(hank williams)
"sudden, unexpected travel
from home or work,
with the inability to recall some or all of one's past
confusion about personal identity
or assumption of a new identity."
(dsm-iv)
"the future
always so clear to me
had become like a black highway
at night.
we were in uncharted territory now,
making up history
as we went along."
(sarah connor in
terminator 2 judgment day)
"there is no place like home."

the wizard of oz)

Here's Amy O'Neill on
Hollywood Boulevard just after
the big sun set in the west, and
nighttime descended on Hollywood.
We were ostensibly finished with our
photo shoot, which was intended mostly
for the 'magic hour,' that wonderful hour of
sunset when the light is miraculous,
all orange and rose and spectral.
So after our shoot, on the way to get some
pizza, we were waiting at this light at
Hollywood & Wilcox (Wilcox being the name
of the woman who named Hollywood, and
gave it its birth), I saw these tourists on
the old boulevard - Hollywood is always
teeming with tourists in search of that
luminous and legendary glamour -
and the little boy, especially, was gaping
at the lovely Amy. So I quickly uncapped
my camera, and held it up to Amy, who
is well-versed in the art of silence, and
picked up my cue instantly and smiled at
me at this exact moment.
A couple of days later I kind of
happened onto this idea of having only
Amy in color. It was an accident, really, as
I was adjusting the contrast on her face, which
was bright in my flash. And this interplay of
bright color with black & white seemed to be
the perfect symbol for the fusion of
reality and cinematic magic that is
Hollywood.
