the crown-of-thorns starfish is the largest starfish in the world, with thorn-like spines sprouting all over its body for protection. if accidentally touched or stepped on, the starfish's long spines (which release a neurotoxin) are capable of inflicting great pain that can last for hours, as well as nausea and vomiting. the starfish is a coral reef predator and prey on coral polyps by climbing onto them, extruding its stomach over them, and releasing digestive enzymes to then absorb the liquefied tissue.

I passed this guy while driving down a 40 mile gravel road on my way to Heart Mt. in SE Oregon.
He was sitting on a bush waiting for Lunch to come scurrying along.
