Geger Hill Bangkalan

Geger hill is located approximately 30 km southeast of the City Bangkalan, precisely in the village of Geger, District Geger. This hill is located at an altitude of about 150-200 meters above sea level.

According to the folk legend, Geger hill was the first place that had been visited by the first civilian who came in Madura. On 7-8 Century, it was Patih Pranggulan from Mendangkawulan kingdom in the the foothill of Semeru became the first man who landed in Planggirân ( a set of rocks) in Geger hill. At that time he came together with Princess Dewi Ratna Roroagung, the daughter of Mendangkawulan king, and she was pregnant.

Both Patih Pranggulan and Princess Dewi Ratna Roroagung which was called as Putri Koneng or Koneng princess was castaway. At geger hill, the princess Koneng was always did meditation at the edge of the cliff, everyday before the sunset. Now, the rock that seems like chair is being called as Palènggiyân (Madura).

Relating the folk legend above, in geger hill, there are five legendary caves in the form of Madurese language, like Petapan cave (the cave for meditation), Goa Potre (princess cave ), Goa Planangan (men cave), Goa Pancong Pote (white lynch cave) and Goa Olar (Snake Cave).

Up to now, in that location there are some visitors from Madura or the outside Madura come to those sites doing some meditating or praying, the local people call this as Tirakatan.

Geger hill is such a potential destination in Madura, for it has camping ground for those who want to explore more about this hill. Moreover, there is also Acacia forest, Mahogany forest and Teak forest that covering 42 hectares of the hil. We can see the beautiful rice field and some lakes over the sightseeing and a resort on the hilltop of Pelanggiran site. Furthermore, it become more potential to be the tourism destination in Bangkalan because this site is having the historical background of the first founding of Madura.

We attained the top of Sugarloaf precisely in time for the sunset, as planned. Lonnie and Anna are there in front, taking in the literally picture-perfect moment. Copacabana is on the far left, Botafogo and the wide marina stretches out below, Cristo Redentor is visible in the distance against the red sky just over the gondola lines, and the melting sun is just slipping behind the distant hills surrounding the city.

That's what it says, but that's precisely where the road-raging, tail-gating maniac driver of a Jimmy, who shook a fist at me and yelled "idiot" (when I dared to pull over to the side of the road for a photo op.), parked anyway when he was done harassing me.

When I spotted this individual inside the ER, he was leaning on a cane and appeared in danger of imminent cardiac arrest, I decided not to turn him in.

Not that he didn't deserve it, the "fusty nut." (a favorite Shakespearean insult)

Springfield, Vermont.

The deer (not sure which species precisely, I think a roe-deer) was hanging out in the forest of the "Amsterdamse Waterleiding duinen"

I took me quite some time to take the picture, first to get at the right side (sun in the back :)) and then I had to wait for the shadow of the tree to slide away from the head. I think it was an hour well spend :))

But I definitely need a longer lens, this guy almost got away before I could take the picture, because he spotted me.

It is not known precisely when the castle was built, but records show the existence of a castle on this site from the early 13th century. The area had been granted to the Durward family in 1229, and they were probably the builders of the castle. It was certainly in existence in 1296, as it was captured by Edward I of England at this time. It was besieged by Sir Andrew de Moray in the course of his clearing the English from northern Scotland. Sir Robert Lauder of Quarrelwood was Constable of Urquhart Castle in 1329, and his grandson Robert Chisholm succeeded him in 1359. The castle was seized from the Crown in the mid-fifteenth century by the Earl of Ross, but recovered shortly afterwards. In 1509, it was given as a gift to the Grants, whose ownership lasted until 1912. During this period, the MacDonalds captured the castle in 1545, while it was also captured by a Covenanter force in 1644. The castle was then largely destroyed in 1692 by Williamite troops who had been holding the castle against Jacobite forces (Gifford 1992, 217). The intention was to ensure that the castle could not become a Jacobite stronghold, an intention that was fully achieved as the castle was never repaired and remained as a ruin. Subsequent plundering of the stonework for re-use by locals, and natural decay, further reduced the ruins.

Pueblo Bonito, the largest and best known Great House in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, northern New Mexico, was built by ancestral Pueblo people and occupied between AD 828 and 1126.

Pueblo Bonito is divided into two sections by a precisely aligned wall, running north to south, through the central plaza. A Great Kiva is placed on either side of the wall, creating a symmetrical pattern common to many of the Great Houses. In addition to the great kivas, over thirty other kivas or ceremonial structures have been found, many also associated with the large central courtyard. Interior living spaces were quite large by the standards of the Ancient Pueblo.

The site covers almost two acres (8,000 m²) and incorporates at least 650 rooms, with some estimates rising to 800. In parts of the village, the tiered structure was four and five stories high. During later construction, some lower level rooms were filled with debris to better support the weight of the upper levels. The builder's use of core and veneer architecture and multi-story construction produced massive masonry walls as much as three feet (1 m) thick.

It is possible that Pueblo Bonito is actually neither a village nor city. While its size has the capacity for a significant population, the environment may not have been ideal for sustaining a large population. Excavations at the site have not revealed significant trash middens indicating residential areas. A common suggestion is that Pueblo Bonito was a ritual center. This is not only evident in the existence of the kivas (which are more often than not attributed to ritual function) but also in the construction of the site and its relation to other Chaco Canyon sites. Although there were many occupants, only 50-60 burials were found here.

Examination of pack rat middens revealed that, at the time that pueblo bonito was built Chaco Canyon and the surrounding areas were wooded by trees such as Ponderosa Pines. Evidence of such trees can be seen within the structure of Pueblo Bonito, such as the first floor support beams. Scientists hypothesised that during the time that the pueblo was inhabited the valley was cleared of almost all of the trees, to provide timber for construction and fuel. This, combined with a period of drought, led to the water table in the valley to drop severely, making the land infertile. This explains why Pueblo Bonito was only inhabited for about 300 years and is a good example of the effect that deforestation can have on the local environment. The Anasazi, no longer able to grow crops to sustain their population, had to move on.

A multi-year field study, centered in Pueblo Bonito, has been launched in order to obtain new information on the economic conditions of the Bonito phase. The ultimate goal of this recent fieldwork is to obtain data that will enable researchers to examine the development of great house communities in respect to relationships between demographic change and economic productivity.

Niklaus Caproni continues to hang back, focused on watching these people and this place. He's not sure what he feels. Not comfort, precisely--never been comfortable in churches. But maybe weirdly at peace. Or at least at peace with his choice. With another nod he moves closer, just to be able to see and hear better, staying out of the madness.

(re Randulf and the kids)

Niklaus Caproni crosses his arms and leans a hip against the pew, watching in confused amusement at the cloaked man who seemed to inexplicably be drawing kids like magnets. Fuck, he was a grown man and he wasn't about to walk over and hug him. But hell. The idea of Santa Claus had creeped him out as a child too, so what did he know.

(cookies win every time)

Niklaus Caproni is about to leave, but the mention of cookies brings him to a stop. Hmm. Wonder if they'd mind. Well, he had to introduce himself sooner or later, so. Stepping close to the strangest-looking nun he'd ever seen he gives his best smile, and bows slightly. "Not part of the class, but wouldn't mind snagging one of those... " He finished with a subtle wink. Charm could still work on a nun. It had worked on Lis well enough.

Darkness Odigaunt doesn't care who's eating her cookies at this point... She nods to the plate on top of the stack in her left hand, "Here, you didn't fight in class either, so you're eligible." She nods to River, not leaving her spot until Niyol took his cookies. Or maybe not... She shot Whysper a grin and moves to the taller group, "Oh, I'm Sister D, by the way."

Niklaus Caproni lifts a brow. "That's the criteria for cookies? I'll be sure to remember that." He doesn't wait for her to change her mind, snagging the one closest to him. "I'm Nik, by the way. Good friend of Ca-- um . Father Eamon's. Don't believe we've had the pleasure."

Park4U® uses ultrasonic sensors located in the front and rear bumpers to precisely calculate the length of the parking slot available, and automatically maneuvers the car into the slot.

The new version needs only 40 cm of clearance at either end of the vehicle to be able to park, a reduction of 43% compared to the first generation, made possible by a more sophisticated geometric calculation. In addition, steering assistance no longer ends when the car first goes into reverse, but continues to help the driver until the vehicle is parked, however many maneuvers may be necessary for a short parking slot.

Park4U® also allows the motorist to exit a parking space, even if it is very tight (25 cm at either end). It assesses the space available in front and behind the vehicle, and calculates the most appropriate maneuver. The driver remains in control of the speed, but the system takes control of steering, as when parking. The system also detects the best moment to exit the parking space, and automatically deactivates to let the driver merge into the traffic.

Park assist systems make parking and reversing not only more convenient, but also safer. In 2008 Valeo’s Park4U® system was awarded the “Genius” safety prize by Allianz Insurance for its role in reducing parking accidents, which account for a third of all car insurance claims made in Germany.

The Bridge:

The construction began on March 31 1937. The bridge cost precisely $5,873,837.17 to build. It all began when the Guinness family (of beer fame), decided to invest in land on the North Shore. In 1932, they purchased 4,000 acres of West Vancouver mountain side through a syndicate called British Pacific Properties Ltd. The plan was develop the land and get people to move there. Part of the Guinness plan was to build a bridge over the First Narrows, the existing 2nd Narrows Bridge being deemed to be to far away and “unreliable” (see the history of the Second Narrows Bridge). The project proved popular during this depression period, and objections over the fact that the alignment would entail an access road through the heart of Stanley Park were overcome. The job-creating project and the spin-off that would come from the building in West Vancouver were impossible to resist.

The Lions Gate Bridge has now become a landmark of Vancouver and the North Shore, and every decision concerning its fate has been very controversial. Recent proposals to replace, widen or alter the bridge have met storms of protest. While many agreed that the ageing structure should be either replaced or upgraded, no consensus could be achieved. Some opposed the retention of existing causeway leading to the bridge through Stanley Park; others opposed replacing the entire bridge wanting to protect it as a historical landmark. Finally, the North Shore Communities raised their voice over the assertion by the Provincial Government that any new structure would require the imposition of tolls to defray the costs, pointing out that no other communities were required to pay tolls when other bridges were built, such as the Alex Fraser Bridge recently erected in the south of Vancouver. As things stand, it looks as though the Lions Gate Bridge will remain more or less as it is today, for many years to come.

There are precisely 92 remaining residents on Pocahontas Island and the large majority are very elderly. The fate and future of the neighborhood may be decided once they have passed on.

Time flies, tempus fugit. Except it does and it doesn’t. It can be measured very precisely to within milliseconds by modern machines but when it comes to us humans, well, it can fly by fast like an eagle or large bird we don’t even see passing overhead, or it is meander slowing like a tortoise, and we wonder when something will ever pass.

This piece was done for a friend’s ‘significant birthday’ and is a small bog pine stump – I hesitate to say sapling because although that would have been its size it could have been the age of a tree but one that never grew large; the growth rings aren’t visible but based on where it comes from (and the poor growth there based on seeing other pieces) it could have grown for several decades.

Anyway, a semi-triangular section of trunk remains, and roots sticking in three directions. The tortoise and bird are on one side. Another side of the trunk has been drilled into to take a dried flower or flowers. The third ‘side’, which is not shown, has the person’s initial in motif style and a flying figure of time.

Co Mayo bog pine- so tempus fugit indeed, at least three and a half thousand years since it grew. 56 cm at its longest, 30 cm high. The main figures have been spot oiled to highlight them and the whole piece finished with matte acrylic varnish.

Intro to 21 Magazine:

"Put a bunch of art students in a room to brainstorm a concept for a magazine and a rich, warm environment of equitable idea exchange and amiable conversation is precisely what you do not get. Ideas are thrown out and ripped apart by overworked and under-caffeinated college kids, while whoever brought forth the idea quivers, inches away from the Tearful Threshold. Minutiae are argued over endlessly. And then it turns out that no one can actually see the big picture anyway. Everyone talks over everyone else, because everyone knows that no other idea is so fine as your own.

Here we had a magazine, and twenty-one of the aforementioned overworked and under-caffeinated students, and what we needed was a concept.

On the bloody backs of freshly slaughtered ideas came one: this one. A number! Any number will do, and everyone will respond to it in New Ways! Revolutionary Ways! Excitingly Artistic and Graphically Thoughtful Ways!

But o! What number to choose? A dilemma beyond all others.

Someone suggested 21. It's loaded with meaning! Our general collective average age! Young adult issues! The number of students in the class! Seven times three!

A cry went up, enough to catch the heart of any art student in the icy grip of despair. Cliché! Cliché!

Being an advanced studio class, we did what any half-intelligent group of artists or designers would do-- make someone else do the work. We sent our professor out into the hall to ask the first person she saw to pick a number. Dave Liske had the misfortune of walking by.

"77," he said.

"Auuugggghhhh, no, too biiiig, we are but artists, we cannot handle large numbers," said the class, as one anguished creature.

Dave Liske thought.

He thought, "What the @#$%Esdfg is going on?"

He thought, "What's wrong with 77?"

He thought, "I hate performance art."

He thought, "21."

The coincidence was too great to ignore. And so it is that you, our intrepid reader, hold this hot little item in your correspondingly hot little hands. It arose from strife, and academia, and much Espresso Royale coffee. It arose from the beautiful mind of Dave Liske. It arose from Art (or was it Design?). Enjoy."

Since that was how the magazine got started, we put Dave Liske on the cover. So, naturally, he is at the publication party, holding a copy of the final product.

Oh, and I don't feel at all bad about reproducing the intro here, since I'm the one who had to write the bloody thing in the first place.

These are our latest discoveries since some time ago....

From this logical statistical point onwards, I guess it can help human beings forecast things more precisely and fast now.

Nothing is uncontrollable or predictable at all? Many things are possible & will be improved sooner or later…Right?

Have you ever tested such experiment or been making any mathematical calculations in your house or any where?

Our health is relied on the daily accumulation of valuable data & figure, does our life success also rely on the daily accumulation of valuable data & figure too.... it is not a nice game probably, but we have no other choice if we do not challenge further, right?

Do we have other better choice?

神化的宇宙梦境-008-健康是靠我们每天里所累积的珍贵数据和数字,成功的人生与否也是靠我们每天里所累积的珍贵数据和数字。。。也许不好玩吧??

我们有其它更美好的选择吗?

If you are interested to know better, kindly please refer to the video at: video.cctv.com/opus/178681.html

We used to keep accumulating all kinds of molecules and pollutant substances every second into our body silently via perspiration process. Among these substances possibilities may include many unknown viruses and other categories as well. The main reason is this universe is full of too many mysterious items which beyond our forecast. Of course, this varies according to how polluted or how hygienic the situation of a particular place.

Have we ever controlled these problems? Can we minimize them?

How can we get rid of such problems cheaply? In fact, I am sure we can resist such problems via mathematical calculations clearly and fast via the valuable information data as shown above.

Do we still dare to counter attack such problems? Can we bet our life that we will be able to live in a minimum virus and pollution condition spontaneously? It can not be denied that people used to work or visit smelly fish or meat stalls environment no matter even in the indoor hypermarkets or at the outdoor compound areas, stuffy factories or massive population density area such as during the schools general meeting & many official general meetings, toilets and etc places usually everyday. All these pollution matters can not be solved logically if we never make a single change.

Since someone has invented certain electrical device which can allow us to minimize the virus and pollutant count effectively? If not mistaken it can release10,000,000,000,000,000 ion/second, this means it can neutralize up to 10,000,000,000,000,000 cations/second instantly.

Since we need to neutralize thousands of unknown positive metallicions especially, it doesn’t mean we can apply too powerful kind of such device.

The important reason here is excessive voltage or radial reaction supply probably may damage our human body’s internal tissue.

We have to choose the adequate electrical consumption supply kinds of equipments only. We must be careful always what brand and what products we shall choose. Brutal choice and action may lead to adverse life impact and life happiness consequently.

Shall we confirm and improve this beneficial fact further?

Isn’t it amazing enough if we can minimize our indoor air pollution problems by a simple touch yet under very cheap condition only? Just imagine if the electrical consumption cost for such smart device is only at around RM5/month. In other words it costs less than RM0.20/day only, isn’t it worthwhile for us to challenge? Prevention is better than cure definitely..

According to such company, their products are complied with the rules & regulations from MYIPO, FDA & and they have obtained many other certified laboratory test accreditation s too.

I think we have to take such kind of logical action no matter how; otherwise our life journey will be just like that forever. That is that… Can you let it go then? I am sure you will not, since you have been equipped with so much knowledge, experience, and power and so on etc

Some of them are beneficial for our body, whereas others might be harmful enough. The consequences of these reasons may result many big issues besides other interlinking disadvantaged possibilities as well.

If we can't filter certain harmful particles out from our body easily, what consequences we may face? Can we depend our luck by praying hard only in this literate world? It must be too ridiculous then if based on the principle of " Nothing Comes From Nothing ". If not, how? For those who are rich enough might be quite alert to undergo various kinds of detoxifications methods regularly.

What about for the poor categories of people, don’t you think they also want to detoxify their body?

Are the current solutions reliable and cheap enough? Have their products been tested & proven working well? Is there any side effect?

What rules & regulations our governments apply? How they govern our countries?

Why can’t human beings prevent them in the first place? This world is too huge, and we are so tiny.... It brings us too many mysterious stories... The more we read, hear and see the more exciting & thrilling we feel …. The consequences of certain experience making us sad and hard to bear sometimes…. Can’t we help our people get rid of certain possible problems? Can’t we help our people to challenge for better condition ???

???? Too many unknown questions keep spinning in my head everyday ...and causing me exhausted and headache only sometimes...

Can any angels help in this world? Well ... many there .... I hope. Just be confident...

"Piesport is a local community in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate and the largest wine-growing town in the Mosel wine-growing region. She has been a member of the Bernkastel-Kues municipality since January 1, 2012.

The local community is located, surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests, on a loop of the Moselle that bulges out to the north in the Moselle valley between Bernkastel-Kues and Trier, more precisely between Minheim and Neumagen. The district of Piesport is located on the left bank of the river on the Eifel side. On the opposite, gently rising side of the river on the Hunsrück side is the Müstert district and a little further downstream, at the exit of the loop, is the Reinsport district. The higher district around the church of St. Martin is Emmel. Ferres is located slightly upstream on the left bank of the river. Müstert used to consist of just a few houses that gather around the All Saints Chapel at the bridgehead of the lower of the two Moselle bridges. This district grew together with Emmel and Reinsport over the centuries and formed the independent municipality of Niederemmel until the administrative reform in 1969. The B 53, the Moseluferstrasse, runs through the district of Niederemmel. From here, at a roundabout at the entrance to the town from the direction of Neumagen, the L 50 branches off to the north over the Moselle bridge to Klausen and the L 156 branches off to the south towards Neumagen-Dhron.

It can be assumed that in Roman times there was a ford through the Moselle at the site of today's town, through which wagons could drive when the water level was low. This ford was dedicated to Mercurius Bigentius, a local deity, from which the name Porto Pingontio was derived, which gradually became Piesport.

A sanctuary was also dedicated to Bigentius, which stood on the northern, left-hand bank on the mountain slope and which is now only remembered by the chapel house, which is also popularly known as Michelskirch ( Lage→ ). In Christian times it was replaced by a church dedicated to the Archangel Michael, which was attested in 1350 as the matrix ecclesia (“mother church”). Because of the long and arduous journey to the parish of Piesport on the banks of the Moselle, a new church was finally built, today's parish church of St. Michael.

The Romans already settled in the region around Piesport. The vineyards framed the place “like the tiers of an amphitheater,” wrote the poet Ausonius. The largest Roman wine press north of the Alps was discovered and partially reconstructed in 1985 between the districts of Alt-Piesport and Ferres. It is the center of the Roman Press Festival, which takes place annually on the second weekend in October. In 1950, a Roman diatret jar was found in a sarcophagus in a burial ground near Niederemmel, which is now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier. Witnesses to the Roman era are also the Roman road (L 157) on the height between Niederemmel and Morbach, where a Roman grave was found near the Tonnkopf hunting lodge, as well as the Römerhof on the southern outskirts of Niederemmel. There was also a Roman milestone at the Tonnkopf.

The first documented mention of Piesport was in 776. Between 1506 and 1508, Piesport lost 82 of its 95 citizens (households) to the plague. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, Piesport was part of Kurtrier. From 1794 the area was under French rule, and in 1815 it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. Since 1946 it has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Today's community was re-formed on June 7, 1969 from the dissolved communities of Piesport (then 503 residents) and Niederemmel (1,633 residents).

Mosel (German: [ˈmoːzl̩]) is one of 13 German wine regions (Weinbaugebiete) for quality wines (Qualitätswein, formerly QbA and Prädikatswein), and takes its name from the Mosel River (French: Moselle; Luxembourgish: Musel). Before 1 August 2007 the region was called Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, but changed to a name that was considered more consumer-friendly. The wine region is Germany's third largest in terms of production but some consider it the leading region in terms of international prestige.

The region covers the valleys of the rivers Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer from near the mouth of the Mosel at Koblenz and upstream to the vicinity of Trier in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The area is known for the steep slopes of the region's vineyards overlooking the river. At 65° degrees incline, the steepest recorded vineyard in the world is the Calmont vineyard located on the Mosel and belonging to the village of Bremm, and therefore referred to as Bremmer Calmont. The Mosel is mainly famous for its wines made from the Riesling grape, but Elbling and Müller-Thurgau also contribute to the production, among others.

In the past two decades red wine production, especially from the Spätburgunder (Pinot noir), has increased in the Mosel and throughout the German vignoble and has become of increasing interest to the international wine community. Because of the northerly location of the Mosel, the Riesling wines are often light, tending to lower alcohol, crisp and high in acidity, and often exhibit "flowery" rather than or in addition to "fruity" aromas. Its most common vineyard soil is derived in the main from various kinds of slate deposits, which tend to give the wines a transparent, mineralic aspect, that often exhibit great depth of flavor. In the current era of climate change much work has been done to improve and gain acceptance for completely dry ("Trocken") Rieslings in this region, so that most of the more famous makers have found acceptance for such wines, particularly in Europe." - info from Wikipedia.

Summer 2019 I did a solo cycling tour across Europe through 12 countries over the course of 3 months. I began my adventure in Edinburgh, Scotland and finished in Florence, Italy cycling 8,816 km. During my trip I took 47,000 photos.

Belmont Village in the early 19th century was precisely the kind of community that Parliament and the Church of England targeted for the building of new churches. St. Peter's came about as a result of the church planting commitment of the Vicar of Bolton, Canon James Slade, and Bishop Prince of the newly created Diocese of Manchester, plus the generosity of two local squires, Thomas and Charles Wright, and the engineer John Hick who between them provided the land and necessary funding for the church to be built and maintained.

Building began in July 1848 and was completed in 1849 at a cost of £3,600. The architect was John E. Gregan, a Scottish designer and builder well-known for a wide range of buildings including The Mechanics' Institute in Manchester.

Taken at precisely 21:22, this is my first attempt at uploading an image that I've tinkered with in CS6.

The sky is "as is" (the reason for even attempting the shot at 6400asa), but the foreground has had copious tinkerings. It's all a big learning curve, so if you feel you'd like to comment, please be gentle!

The trip to Colorado was, really, not precisely a vacation. It concerned business both emotional and financial, but we didn't want it to be "all-business."

So, we tried to eat out somewhere different every night (despite the seemingly untrounceable rule of "Everything is 45 minutes from everything else").

Here, the Rivers Restaurant in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

I ate elk.

Not an odd thing; I've eaten it many times in the past. We even raised elk at one point (angry, surly beasties, far more temperamental and grumpy than the whitetail deer we raised).

Delicious, nevertheless.

We went out mapping, or more precisely doing aerial photography, flying a digital camera under a nice big green balloon from the green of Goldsmiths University. The MA is Design at Goldsmiths has an option called “Design & Environment” supervised by Prof Jennifer Gabrys. It is a course that initiates students to alternatives design and environmental methods and pratices. This hands-on experiment was lead by Cesar Harada acting both as Goldsmiths tutor and Public Laboratory instructor. The mappers -who are also the authors of this post- were Anuja Uttamrao Borker, Inessa Demidova, Shan-Yu Hsu, Dk Hajah Hazwani Pg Dato Haji Jaberudin, Federica Sterpos, Chian-Yun Yang, Yifan Zhang, Elvira Grob.

When Peter Augustus Jay, died in 1843, his son, Dr. John Clarkson Jay (JC) inherited the Rye estate. According to his granddaughter, Laura Jay Wells, it was at this time that Jay purchased a yacht precisely because he would be living on the Sound; he paid $1,500 for it and it was aptly dubbed “La Coquille,” the french word for seashell - - all the more apropos, given that his prize array of over 50,000 seashells today forms the core collection of mollusks at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. It was an augur of even greater things to come. Just one year later, in 1844, JC Jay would make history, along with eight other men including John Cox Stevens, in founding the legendary New York Yacht Club. He would race in the NYYC's first regatta or "Trial of speed" on July 17, 1845 in his yacht, La Coquille.

Sailing was but one of JC Jay's interests and his significant contributions to science and his community endure. He helped establish the NY Lyceum of Natural History (today it still exists as the NY Academy of Sciences,) including serving as its Treasurer and leading the fund for building a structure to house its collections in Manhattan in 1836. He was also reponsible for raising the funds to help build the current Gothic Revival Christ Church in Rye in 1868.

JC Jay died in 1891 and the Rye property passed to his children who owned it through 1904.

[O]ne of America's intrinsic sacred sites --'specially special,' if you like -- because a great family's great house and its great and sweeping surrounding landscape have, almost miraculously, both survived intact and are now a permanent part of the America the next centuries of Americans will build." I don't know precisely why the Greenpeace folks came to the Habitat conference, probably just to get the brand out there, but I took a shot at (what turned out to be) their second boat of five or six. The oddest thing about the shot to my eye, nearly forty years later, is the way I framed it, excluding a good deal of the boat itself, and focussing on the shape; the thing stranger is the sail itself, completely superfluous on a diesel powered vessel, and again, one suspects that the Greenpeacers hoisted it mainly as a kind of advertising banner. Note that the sail carries not just the peace ("Ban the Bomb") symbol, but above it the Ron Cobb created Eco-symbol which was later incorporated into the ecology flag.

How - precisely - stupid and/or inconsiderate can a driver be? How is my wife's Fiesta meant to manoeuvre out of her legitimate parking-space, when this idiot with the MPV's parked in a gap [not a parking space]?

This small, precisely thrown cup is by Eugene Deutch (1904-1959), who operated a studio in Wilmette, Illinois, just north of Chicago. The colorful glaze treatment is great. It is hand-incised "E Deutch 1951" on the bottom.
