The Amplifier takes a signal from instruments such as a guitar, bass gultar or keyboard which then passes through loudspeakers to emerge with a greatly increased volume. They were first used by electric guitars in the 1930s. Combination ("combo") amplifiers include a preamplifier, a power amplifier, tone controls, and one or more speakers in a cabinet.

These are Fender amplifiers. On the left is a Twin Reverb (a guitar amplifier developed from the earlier Twin introduced in 1952). On the right is a Deville (a combo tube amplifier developed in 1996).

Something I used to take for granted. Fender-branded 7025 preamp tubes. The 7025 was allegedly a lower-noise variant of the more common 12AX7 tube. I've never been able to get a straight answer about what was significantly different about them versus plain old 12AX7 tubes, but my inner child believes that they sound better than a common 12AX7. My inner child is frequently known to be completely idiotic, though, so it's hard to say.

ARTIST'S CONCEPT OF THE HELIOS CARBON DIOXIDE LASER FACILITY.

HELIOS IS AN EIGHT-BEAM CARBON DIOXIDE LASER AND TARGET FACILITY FOR THE STUDY OF LASER-FUSION PROCESSES. THE DESIGN OF THE LASER IS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF THE ELECTRON-BEAM CONTROLLED HIGH-PRESSURE ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE. THE EIGHT BEAMS DELIVER A TOTAL OF 9KJ TO TARGETS IN SUB-NANOSECOND PULSES. IN THIS VIEW, THE RECTANGULAR TANKS ON THE LEFT CONTAIN THE GAS DISCHARGE PULSERS. THE DUAL- BEAM AMPLIFIERS AND TARGET CHAMBER ARE IN THE MAIN ROOM. THE OSCILLATORS AND PREAMPLIFIERS ARE BELOW THE CONTROL ROOM, AND THE GUN PULSERS AND VACUUM PUMPS ARE IN THE ROOM TO THE RIGHT.

Out of the blue at 100 RMS

My first record was named after an advertising jingle for "Rust-oleum" and released at a pivotal point in rock music history. But to understand why it was important, you have to go back in time: Pre Internet and mp3; Before MTV and video; Even before CD's and triple RRR.

A land of Countdown, cassettes and vinyl LP's. Music was dictated by commercial AM radio. A bland mixture of over produced pop, rock and Disco.

I hate Disco.

Up till this point my musical tastes where my Dads tastes. From the progressive to symphonic rock of Supertramp, Queen and ELO. The pure pop of Elton and the stripped back rock of early Dire Straits. Being a bit of a HiFi nerd, Dad slowly built up a stereo system consisted of a Hafler DH-200 power-amp connected to a NAD 1020 pre-amp with speakers big enough to drive the sound.

School intervened. An assignment meant I had to find lyrics to a song of my choice and discuss it in class. Tuning to the radio of those days was a wasteland of sound. Rarely did you find new, good music. By chance I heard an acoustic tune on the radio. Sounded catchy and was by the same musician who released a Nashville inspired album released a year previously. I taped it off the radio, laboriously transcribed the lyrics. Wrote up a paper and discussed it in class. I'd recently got a job at the local supermarket. So I purchased the LP, my first. Got it home, listened to the first side. Okay, similar to what I'd expected. Flipped it over, turned it up. Distortion at 100 RMS. Nothing was ever quite the same again.

The year, 1979. The album, Neil Young's, "Rust Never Sleeps".

National Mexicana, S.A., was founded in 1967 by Matsushita Electric of Japan and the mexican Grupo Industrial Guindi, locating the manufacturing plant in 22 Toluca Boulevard, Naucalpan de Juárez, Estado de Mexico. At the end 60´s and during 70´s National Mexicana, S.A., manufactured several models, from pocket to table top radios and some with turntable.

This particular radio was released in 1969 under Modelo 113 (KAMPESINO) and seem to be produced at list during ten years. By design the base is likely to break easily, which makes difficult to find without damage. It has two ways power supply (designed DUAL MATIC by National Mexicana): 115-135 VAC or four "D" batteries; also has leads to connect external antenna.

This one is in pristine condition and has its cardboard box, instruction manual, warranty and transparent plastic bag wrap. The chassis has one integrated circuit TBA570A (Conversor, F.I, Detector, Audio Preamplifier), two silicon transistor BC328 in Audio Power, one diode 1N4548 (Estabilizer) and two diodes A-7 as Rectifier.
