For the past two days, I've been practicing taking pictures of the Sun to prepare myself for the upcoming Solar Eclipse.
In NY State, the Eclipse will be partial! I just hope that the weather will be favorable.
The spot on the upper right of the sun's surface is actually a sunspot!
Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the Sun's atmosphere that appear as spots darker than the surrounding areas. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentration of magnetic field flux that inhibit convection.
Sunspots usually appear in pairs of opposite magnetic polarity. Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle.

Practice Makes Perfect - A couple weeks ago, I observed a cooperative immature Red-tailed Hawk on a family hike. I didn't get the shots I wanted that day, but figured I'd try again.
My buddy and I were treated to almost an hour of great passes by this hawk during a windy morning as it practiced hunting and chased a group of Turkey Vultures around. Was a great opportunity to practice bird in flight (BIF) techniques!

We revisited the Balancing Rocks Project along the Ottawa River last weekend. I finally spent some time playing with my new Big Stopper filter. I've actually had it for about 4 months but I haven't really had the time to see how it works. The balancing rocks were crowded with new sculptures which made it harder to isolate a few. The wind was heavier than I would have liked considering I was working with glass while standing on a rock ledge. It also made the water a bit choppy. However, I did try this shot for effect and I am pleased with what the filter can do. There are a few imperfections in this image.( I think I got a bit of spray on the lens.) However, I was encouraged to try more shots on a calmer day. The rocks will be taken down soon though for the winter.

I'm caught up and occupied with planning my summer trip (as always, should it happen). It will be my 9th year in a row where I have organized my life in such a way that allows me to get away for most of the month of July.
By this point in my planning, I have most of the roads and cemeteries plotted out. Like 7 out of the past 8 years, I'm hitting Oglala National Grassland in Nebraska. Each time I explore it, I find something new and something different.
But my time is limited and I don't want to be rushed. I have more (and more) new places to find and roads to travel. Nothing is set in stone until it actually happens, but I want to explore a bit of Michigan and Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana. But we'll see.
This is a photo I took in July of 2023 in Oglala National Grassland. I don't remember the exact location, but that's okay.

I watched this Guy with this little limb for 20 minutes picking it up and putting it down. There was no other nesting material in the tree. I think he was practicing for next year.

After finally finishing unpacking the obvious next step was to start practicing. Alison pulled her wand from her holster and took a step toward the trunk. Keeping her distance she pushed the trunk's lid open with the tip of her sneakers and quickly jumped back. A grin struck her face and she was ready!
The Blue Angles are stationed in Pensacola, Florida where i live. And the Navy Base is about 2 miles from my house. This morning I walked out into the yard and they were practicing for the 2009 season. This one flew right over the house... They are practicing again tomorrow so hopefully i can get some better details. It's really hard to get a good pic of a jet... but i could watch them all day! They are definitely a piece of my childhood :)
