Toby is tolerable with hats, but Riley is a mixed bag. Yesterday (when I was just practicing and not shooting at all) he was excellent.
Today - in front of my iPhone on its tripod (so - minimal setup - see stream for cute little iPhone tripod I use) and he was... unimpressed.
However, since I was using the kitchen lights and NOT the flash - I could take as many pictures (via remote) as I wanted.
Ha!
This was the best in the box (with only TWO that had both dogs with hats and me not in the picture).
(and yes, my dogs, my floors, and my cabinets are all the same color. This is actually where I shoot all my "studio" photographs - hence the usage of backdrops)

Human's haven't really been too powerful as wizards. Generally, they live too short to become very good. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule though, and Leoben Gladomain is one of those. Well-versed in the arts of magic, this wizard is feared by the evil and held in high honor by the masses. Even nobles ask his assistance sometimes. But, like everyone, Leoben must practice new spells. After all, he doesn't want to accidentally turn a princess into a frog, right?

I'd like to try more portrait photography, if only I could just get out of the candid format :-)
This is my daughter-in-law, lovingly thought of as my other daughter :-)
Got bored while doing some work the other day, so I decided to take an 'old friend' out to catch up for a bit. Notice anything else music-related in this shot other than the objects in the middle? Nothing really impressive for the composition this time around, just an impromptu shot (ambient light) to deal with the stress.
Two papers down, six more to go, and five of them to tackle within the next week, sigh. I'm actually missing those benches along that walkway. Counting down to the days of freedom, and the end of yet another disastrous semester. It's somewhat unnerving when you realise your usually cheerful and bubbly friends (from school) have all become somewhat sullen and quieter. I really hate how stress wipes the smiles off the faces of people.
As for the title, it just seemed apt for this shot because that's really what happens in real life. We aren't always lucky enough to succeed with just one try, but things improve as we repeat them and become more familiar. I guess it can be applied to photography too, I think, be it the actual photo taking, or the post-processing. If we don't nail a shot the first time, analysing how things could have been done better tends to bring better results when we attempt it again.

Just because the rodent season is over, it is never sufficient to rest on one's laurels. A successful season past is no guarantee for the future. Every season presents an opportunity to work on skills. For example, a snow encrusted twig makes a more than suitable substitution for a prideful presentation to one's partner. While a bit less tricky to catch, other hazards clearly exist complicating the activity.
This is Joshua practicing his glass blowing at a shop in Cabo San Lucas. We visited as part of an organized city tour and some people got to try out blowing a bubble of molten glass. The bubble at the end of the metal rod quickly cooled and then was broken, producing very thin glass shards that were discarded.

I would never call myself a car nut or car enthusiast, to be honest. A friend and I saw an advert for a car show some time back and we decided it was a good way to spend a warm Sunday afternoon. Our very first time at a vintage car show and it didn't disappoint.
So I have decided to start doing more things outside of my regular comfort zone. Never in a million years did I think about cars as a subject but trying something new is always Let's see how that goes. My blog post explains in a bit more detail and I've included the link to it in this caption.
Let's end this series on a high note. So I tried to practice my editing skills again. Like the last shot, this isn't the original image. This is another composite because I removed the background which was full of cars and people and changed the boring sky to this gorgeous blue. A lot easier than the last one because I didn't have to wonder about the windows because of the open hood. I must admit that I had so much fun with these edits and I'm planning a few new things like double exposures. Should I do more? Tell me what you think below. See if you can name that car too. ;)
To all of you, enjoy the weekend and have an awesome week ahead, wherever you are!

As everyone was laying claim to their spots for the UP Big Boy to begin its northward journey from Poplar Bluff to St. Louis Missouri, UP MHOAS heads north out of Poplar Bluff and across the Black River. This train provided those already set up the opportunity to get a practice shot, checking exposures, focus points, and compositions before show time.

A visit to Loch of Kinnordy, a 45 minute drive from us, where the Bittern has been showing nicely recently. Not today however, so a spot of practice on the Herons there, so I'll be ready for the main event! Actually to be quite honest, I'm happy enough with Herons - love the long snaky neck. But a Bittern would be nice all the same.
This is my youngest. He knocked out some 80's rock for me while posing and letting me practice with my lighting. Oddly enough, he wasn't posing here, he was just looking at something behind him. I ended up liking it the best even though he's not playing his guitar here. I liked it so much when I took it I had him do several poses similar to this one.

Heavy winter rains create seasonal creeks that cascade down hillsides in unexpected places. This one was off OR-99 south of Oregon City.
You practice with your trumpet don't ya?
You practice your guitar till your fingers bleed.
Why?
Because if you're not an idiot you wanna give a wonderful performance with the camera.

Taken at the same time as my 'Blowin in the Wind' shot. This is just a little further down the hill. Since I fixed my camera I have been thinking about my photography differently. Whilst I realise that my camera skills have improved, I still have a lot to learn about seeing a shot in my mind and quickly capturing it. John Free's video uploads have kept me motivated in practicing and improving what I do here.
**this shot didn't have the great light as the previous one shown below. This scene is in a dip, when we drive through here we always lose phone signal, it's a communication black hole! The light is softer and more subdued, giving a more gentle scene. I like this shot, however it has undergone multiple revisions and I'm still not 100% about it.
Thanks for coming to look at my little dusty corner of Flickr :)
