Medical Friendly Shelter Full Scale Exercise 2018
The City held a full-scale exercise of the Medically Friendly Shelter (MFS) designed to establish a learning environment for participants to exercise their MFS operational plans.
The exercise served as a practical walk through of planning, operational coordination, operational communication, logistics and supply chain management, public health, healthcare, and emergency medical services
The MFS is only activated for a Category 2 or greater hurricane or as directed by the City Manager. The MFS is for people who, during periods of evacuation or emergency, require sheltering assistance due to physical, mental or cognitive impairment, or a sensory disability that exceeds the basic level of care provided at a general population shelter, but does not require the level of care provided at a skilled medical facility. This includes help with administering medication, personal hygiene assistance with activities of daily living (washing, dressing and eating).

Getting a little practice in before the zombie apocalypse! And for those curious, the model is a Horton Scout HD 125 crossbow, the same model Daryl uses in The Walking Dead!

Incorporating traditional Nubian motifs and cultural practices, the Nubian Village at Aswan is full of vernacular buildings built of concrete and masonry, which express the unique indigenous culture of the Nubian people. The village at Aswan was settled beginning in the 1960s, as the Aswan High Dam was under construction and threatened former indigenous lands and settlements with inundation. As the Nubians are somewhat distinct culturally from the rest of Egypt, they created new settlements in areas that were available, but often separate from other people. Over time, these settlements have grown and fleshed out to the point where some of them resemble aspects of the former villages, though the construction method today is often of clay brick and concrete, rather than the mud brick often found in traditional settlements. Nubian architecture incorporates sets of interlocking arches, interlocking triangular elements, domes, flat roofs, barrel vaults, as well as colorful colors and decorative murals on the outsides of buildings. In some cases, if there is an individual in the village who is seen as particularly “strong,” they will catch and kill a Crocodile, and hang it’s mummified body on the exterior of their home next to the door. Today, this particular village benefits from being close to the tourist resorts of Aswan, while still being separate and somewhat secluded, which has helped the Nubians hold onto their distinct identity and culture for millennia.

May is JulieFrick's month of the TwitterBee. These are not her fabrics, though!
I'm planning to do a block with 4 of these squares. Since I've never pieced curves before*, I thought I should make a practice square. This one came out pretty well, so I think I can move ahead to Julie's fabrics.
This is a 6" square, using Drunkard's Path templates I downloaded here.
Julie's will have a white background and use some of these beautiful fabrics.
* Who am I kidding? I'm a total quilting newbie. I've never even made a quilt before. I'm working on my first one though!

Historic accomplishment by Team RLL to come back after an accident in Saturday mornings practice causing damage to the tub. A spare chassis is shipped Saturday 3PM from their Indianapolis shop, 10 hours and 600 miles away. The crew gets rest readying for the work of swapping necessary components/powertrain from damaged tub to the spare. I happened to record these images as their work is completed, the hybrid system/engine is fired up and the driver pulls away for a start from pit lane. While this is going on, the field is already out on their pace lap. You can see in the final images the crew members sprinting to take up position in their pit stall which had to be 300 to 400 yards away. What's even more amazing is they ultimately finished position 6 and on the same lap count as 1st place. TEAM WORK.
