The smallsword was a dueling weapon of the 18th century. These are the practice versions that my daughter and I use to study historical fencing at MASHS, The Mid-Atlantic Society for Historical Swordsmanship. We are currently working from Domenico Angelo's 1763 fencing manual, The School of Fencing .

Seeing as I've never made a rag quilt before, I decided to do a little practice on some very small scraps of denim-- just to get some idea of how the frays might look. (These aren't as "raggy" as I'd hoped, really, but they're supposed to fray more and more with subsequent washings.)
It was also a chance for me to "refamiliarize" myself with my sewing machine. (I haven't really sewn much before, so it was rather slow going at first.)
ETA: I've since made more rag-quilted coasters from denim scraps, kind of like these.

Our first semi-organized fighter practice, in Shazhou Park, Zhangjiagang, China. We had 4 fighters and many curious spectators. Having no armor, the best we could do was boffers and motorcycle helmets, but it was enough to get my fighting fix. For today, anyway.
