Master Potter Thomas Auer at work in his studio in Passau, Germany

There was some empty room on the student's shelves at the pottery studio today...so I filled it with me!

I was out between the rains on a Saturday night in March 2021 to do some photography. I liked these windows an a coffee shop/pottery studio.

From the top - a lidded greenware vessel just trimmed on the wheel, and now waiting to be glazed and fired. This texture is fun to see from all angles and shadows. #cy365#captureyour365#potterystudio

Glazed bisque ready to fire.

I’ve brushed glaze on this double walled form in a similar style to the finished vase alongside it...made by me last year. Fingers crossed for a successful glaze fire!

Drying enough to put in a bisque firing....then they will be glazed in wonderful rich layers of greens and blues, and the final firing. All will be on sale at the Mother's Day Studio Tour on Mother's Day weekend.

American born potter Kat Wheeler lives and works in Cornwall, England at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives. This photo was made at the Minnesota studio of Jeff Oestreich near Taylor's Falls during the annual Saint Croix Valley Potter's tour. As the sign on the wheel indicates, this wheel once belonged to the late English potter Bernard Leach, who founded the studio in St. Ives where Wheeler works now.

Two pieces that have been fired but not yet glazed

Step into the rustic charm of a traditional Japanese pottery workshop. This image captures the exterior of the workshop, featuring a wooden structure with sliding panels and a signboard above the entrance with Japanese characters. The signboard adds an authentic touch, indicating the artisanal nature of the space. Outside the entrance, a large ceramic pot filled with vibrant yellow flowers and a small tree bring a pop of color and life to the scene.

The interior, visible through the open sliding panels, showcases more large ceramic pots and umbrellas, hinting at the craft activities inside. The combination of natural wood, ceramic art, and greenery creates a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. This setting highlights the cultural and artisanal aspects of Japanese pottery making, blending tradition with artistic expression.

The workshop’s design, with its simple yet functional architecture, reflects the principles of Japanese craftsmanship—emphasizing natural materials, attention to detail, and a deep connection with nature. The presence of the large ceramic pots and tools suggests a space where skilled artisans shape clay into beautiful and functional pieces, continuing a craft that has been practiced for centuries.

Whether you are a pottery enthusiast or simply appreciate traditional Japanese culture, this workshop offers a glimpse into the world of Japanese ceramics. It’s a place where creativity and tradition come together, providing a tranquil retreat for those who seek to explore the art of pottery making.

Watching any potter throwing or building can be fascinating. The ones with more experience can make me feel as if I'm in the presence of magic!

Here is the lovely talented photographer and great supporter of the arts, Chris Tiessen. He was in my studio photographing me for an article in a local magazine. I didn't give him my mug as a prop to hold, no. he owns a few of my local Guelph mugs. He understands supporting your local artistic communtity!

The potter refers to this piece as Industrial Art. Science Fiction fans might be tempted to call it Steampunk.

The motif of an Inca cross is seen frequently in ancient and modern stone work in Peru. Three steps

turned 90 degrees and repeated around the circle. The three steps are also a common motif.

This is my "studio". I live in a small apartment in New York City and have no room for a wheel so...I used my hall closet. Works fine...easy to clean too.

Looking forward to seeing pics of other studios.

This wall tile is a commission for the St. Mary's County, Maryland Garden Club. It will be given to the participants of the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage, May 2, 2009 who have their homes and gardens as part of the tour. I was very pleased with how these 9 plaques came out. I hope the recipients are as happy with them as I am.

Still working on my throwing. I had never done any pottery before taking this class and I have quickly become obsessed. I’m having so much fun!

My mum in her pottery studio. Leica lllc (100 yrs of Leica) ( cheers Dave!)

My friend does beautiful work at Ruby's Clay Studio in the Castro. I'll have some more of her stuff photo'ed here, I hope. This is others' work and a general shot of one of the corners of the studio.
