For centuries this lone cross has stood upon the bleak moorland with just the murmuring Grimstone and Sortridge Leat for company. English Heritage notes on its Pastscape Record that the cross is of medieval origin and date it to between 1400 and 1499. It would seem that the purpose of the Windy Post was to act as a marker of the Tavistock to Ashburton trans-moor track which in effect was an early medieval route which connected Buckfast and Tavistock abbeys.

About 5 years ago, posts were set around the perimter of the small reservoir where I like to photograph to keep motorized vehicles from damaging the shoreline. This year, the lake level has dropped considerably leaving spaces along the edges where ATVs can slip through, which they have. The once quiet campgrounds and forest are now abuzz with the sound of 100 lawn mowers.
At another lake, higher up on the mountain, similar posting has kept ATVs out of the marshy flat that surrounds half of the lake's perimeter. On my last visit, someone had unbolted a cross beam allowing entry to the wetland leaving deep grooves in the mud and flattened grass.
Just because you can go there, doesn't mean you should.

I loved the sense of clean open space on Lindisfarne Causeway. It's a hard thing to find on our increasingly crowded island. With more and more housing estates being built and the very real possibility of England just becoming one big conurbation, open space will become ever more valuable. This image might not be to everyone's taste, because in order to create an airiness and cleanliness, I have purposely avoided using deep blacks and shadowed areas. The high key effect is a deliberate choice, but I am also aware that those high key areas also need detail. The central post acts as an anchor for the rest of the image.
