A summer Saturday 'Skeggie' bash was a must back in the early 80s, as there was traction variety and superb (and ancient) infrastructure to be enjoyed. Havenhouse is the first station out from Skegness and at this time boasted somersault semaphore signals, and impressive signal box and station house. Now, only the latter survives. On 28th July 1984, all was on view, as Class 40 No. 40122 (originally No. D200, the doyen of the class) approaches with a Skegness - Manchester Piccadilly summer Saturday working. It is just about to pass the station home signal, which will within seconds, be thrown back to danger. The signalman here had a reputation for returning his signals very quickly, as I suspect he had had about enough of the legions of photographers for whom this was a 'required' location. It looks like Maybach Music may also have secured the master portrait shot. Happy Days! Copyright Photograph John Whitehouse - all rights reserved

We had a dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Berkeley. I prefer taking candid portrait shots. For this I simply ask people to ignore me. This results in naturally looking portraits, like thsi one taken with the fully open vintage Dream Lens.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

This was actually pretty hard for me to do - both in terms of lighting (used a single light bulb) and for some reason i find it much more comfortable to do face self portrait shots rather than show anything else. I'm not really sure why. I'm not shy and don't hate my body or anything. I have however noticed that it is far more likely to come across female 'flesh' on flickr than male (which i find far from an issue). So maybe it's not just me. I just think as a male it's important to avoid falling into that category of the 'creepy' man with pictures of himself that scare people off (me included). The boundary of which is pretty blurred depending on who you are, so most of us just stay well away. I don't know really. This is just me (hopefully not being 'creepy').

Side note; I will never get anywhere near that boundary.

1) It's weird

2) My dad is on here and mocks my face let alone if i ever got my butt out.

Thought for the day over.

A portrait shot of a 65-year-old guy who for many years supported his family by fishing before becoming briefly as a member of the local village civilian peace-keeping force - which position he was later on forced to quit when he suffered from stroke.

At present, even without going through a proper medical rehabilitation, he can now walk around on his own two feet, although he still finds it very hard to do any household chores, except sweeping the front yard of his family's house.

Portrait shot in preparation for a workshop i did in January. It was supposed to show the difference between high-key and low-key on the one hand (especially regarding the levels) and to show the difference between quick'n'dirty smartphone portraits and professionally lit high end portraits on the other.

This is a landscape version from my visit to Holywell Bay near Newquay earlier in the summer. This was taken only a few minutes apart from the portrait shot but the difference in the sky is quite dramatic.

It might not look like it here but this beach and these rocks were featured in the opening sequence from 'Die Another Day' the James Bond film.

In this version I deliberately kept the contrast and shadows low to give a more gentle, mellow feel.

Thanks for looking.

A series of portraits shot as a 'Model Test' session. The goal was to capture raw charisma and genuine spontaneity through a minimalist approach.

Switching to Black & White highlights the model's presence and the depth of her gaze. The lighting was a mix of late afternoon sun and a flash with an umbrella to enhance the details and create a professional, polished look.

From quiet intensity to dynamic movement, this series explores the versatility of a 'New Face'.

Post-ride helmet hair? . . . this shot is from the spring of 2019 when the wife and I took a long weekend group ride up in the twisties of the Ozark Mountains for a meetup/anniversary motorcycle trip where we met up with about 25 other fellow riders from across North America. Needless to say, we had a wonderful time!
