A monument to the memory of the victims of the tragedy at the École Polytechnique de Montréal, Nef pour quatorze reines completely occupies the site and suggests a time to pause. Fourteen blocks are each linked to a band of black granite bearing the name of one of the victims: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, and Annie Turcotte. The blocks are placed along the entire length of this long, narrow space, encouraging passersby to stroll down a path of reflection and meditation.

The first and last names of the 14 women take form in the negative spaces of the letters – a symbol of absence – and through the contrast between the stone and stainless steel, evoking, respectively, commemoration and the profession of engineer. Engaged in a slow reading of the letters, the viewer gradually reconstructs the identities of the victims as a way of bringing back from the void the traces of a perceptible memory. Through the reader’s individual experience, the artwork subsumes the women’s identity and fate beneath important collective issues such as non-violence, respect, and memory.

“Our artwork is a memorial that integrates the site and the monument into a single commemorative gesture in memory of the 14 young women. The evocation of those who have died becomes the site and the site becomes a place of memory. The memorial invites pedestrians to a form of communication that is both visual and spiritual, that places at the centre of a landscape a commemorative event and a site of meditation and contemplation” 1 (1999).

Jean-Paul Riopelle

1923 - 2002

Born in Montreal in 1923, Jean-Paul Riopelle studied at the École Polytechnique (1941) and at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1942-1944), attending Paul-Émile Borduas’ workshop and joining the Automatistes group with whom he signed the “Refus Global” manifesto in 1948. In the late 1940s, he also settled in France where he briefly entertained ties with members of the Surrealist movement. These experiences had considerable impact on Riopelle’s early practice, in which he developed a unique visual language based on spontaneous gesture and repetition, creating beautiful abstract works by throwing colorful spurts of paint in filament-like marks that embrace the entire pictorial surface.

During the first half of the 1950s, he graduated to a mature style, working a thick impasto from paint applied directly from the tube and shaped with a spatula in an “all-over” fashion that suggested parallels with Abstract Expressionism. Rendering large-scale paintings that incorporated captivating contrasts and textures in mosaic-like compositions, Riopelle quickly gained international notoriety. Starting in the late 1960s, he started spending more time in Canada, eventually returning to Quebec. His work from the 1970s and 1980s is marked by a gradual return to representative forms inspired by the animal theme, and by the artist’s adoption of a new technique based on the use of stencils and aerosol paint.

One of Canada’s most prominent artists, Jean-Paul Riopelle distinguished himself amongst his contemporaries and his art continues to draw international attention today. He received an honorable mention from the Guggenheim International Award in 1958, participated in the Venice Biennale (1952, 1954, 1962) and the São Paulo Biennale (1955). Major solo exhibitions of his work were presented at the Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne (1958), the National Gallery of Canada (1963) and the Musée du Québec (1967). In 1982, The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal hosted “Jean-Paul Riopelle : peintures 1946-1977”, an exhibition organized by the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. In 1991, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts also organized a major retrospective of the artist’s work which then travelled to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Riopelle received several honorary degrees, notably those delivered by the University of Manitoba (1972) and by McGill University (1968). He was made Companion of the Order of Canada (1969) and won the prestigious Prix Paul-Émile Borduas (1981) as well as the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris (1985). Riopelle died on March 12, 2002 in Île-aux-Grues, Québec, at the age of 78.

Hope, Lord Elgin, Ed.D. Clarke, Fr. Andréossy gibi birçok batılı gezgin hesabına çalışmıştır. Desenleri birçok seyahatname kitabını dekore etmiştir.

About 1000 students are currently doing their PhD at Institut Polytechnique de Paris and many of them participated in the PhD Welcome Day that took place on the campus of IP Paris at Ecole Polytechnique.

Several presentations took place, notably by Adriana TAPUS, Director of the Doctoral School of Institut Polytechnique de Paris, Eric LABAYE, President of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, the Student association of PhD students and keynote speech by Dr. Vincent BOUCHET on “Finance and climate: issues, risks and organization”.

During the second part of the day, 40 second year PhD students participated in the “Doctoral School of IP Paris Best Poster Award” during which they presented their thesis subject.

Charles Pertusier (1779-1836) was an officer of the Horse Artillery Regiment of the Imperial Guard. After completing his studies at the École Polytechnique of France, he was sent to Venetian Dalmatia and served as officer of the artillery. In Dalmatia, Pertusier was able to study the local antiquities. He stayed in Istanbul from 1812 to the fall of Napoleon, as military attaché to French ambassador A. Fr. Andréossy. After the Restauration, Pertusier ascended the ranks of the military hierarchy. He was also a fellow of the Societé Géographique of Paris and the Academy of Sciences of Besançon, and a holder of the Légion d'Honneur.

Apart from his remarkable work on Istanbul and its environs, Pertusier composed literary works and political and military studies on the regions adjacent to the Adriatic sea. His description of Istanbul is divided into walks to the monuments and sights of the city. Pertusier includes a wealth on information on the monuments as well as on the religious and ethnic groups which coexisted in the Ottoman capital (by dedicating, for example, several chapters to Phanariot Greeks). His work is one of the most remarkable editions on early 19th century Istanbul.

The Atlas to the text includes plates showing monuments and views of Istanbul. The exquisite engravings are the work of Piringer, while the drawings were made by famous painter, draughtsman and architect M. Fr. Préaulx. Préaulx lived in Istanbul from 1796 to 1827 and worked for several other Western European travellers such as Th. Hope, Lord Elgin, Ed. D. Clarke and Fr. Andréossy. Thus, his drawings illustrate a great number of travel accounts.
