Remembering that fatal day massacre Dec.6th,1989... 14 young women from the Polytechnique de Montreal lost their lives just because they were 'WOMEN'. Members of the engineering faculty had no chance of survival. It's still so fresh in my mind having lived one street from this place, my girls were in high school, but the commotion, police, ambulances and parents parking anyway just to be able to run to the university of Montreal and get news of their loved ones. To see stretchers after stretchers go by, not knowing who they were, how was their state and what had happened is still so fresh in my mind & I'm not a parent of these young women, I can't imagine what their loved ones were feeling and really nobody will ever know, feelings are either put in full view or kept in a part of one's heart to return to and try to make sense of all that happened on Wednesday december 6th,1989
R.I.P.
The 14 roses and the explosion of my drawing is hanging in my office to remember... that I too am a woman and it can happen at any age or time.
BUT HAVE WE LEARNED SOMETHING.....

Action on Violence Against Women:
On December 6th, 2007 – the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women – the Oxford Regional Labour Council erected a beautiful memorial at the northwest corner of the property in commemoration of the murder of 14 young women at Polytechnique Montreal on December 6th, 1989. Standing right before the back entrance to the courthouse, this monument serves as a reminder to workers and visitors alike to fight against injustice and remember their commitment to end violence against women not just within our community, but across all nations.
EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) is one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions. We walked around the campus and it has some great architecture.
This is the Mechanical Engineering school and it hosts the Discovery Learning Labs, an innovative teaching project meant to encourage students to engage in experimentation and learning through discovery. The building also holds interdisciplinary research laboratories run by the School of Engineering, a space for testing drones and a lecture hall.

Architectural detail at Rolex Learning Center EFPL - Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne - architects SANAA - Sejima and Nishizawa -
The Rolex Learning Center will function as a laboratory for learning, a library with 500,000 volumes and an international cultural hub for EPFL, open to both students and the public. Spread over one single fluid space of 20,000 sq metres, it provides a seamless network of services, libraries, information gathering, social spaces, spaces to study, restaurants, cafes and beautiful outdoor spaces. It is a highly innovative building, with gentle slopes and terraces, undulating around a series of internal ‘patios’, with almost invisible supports for its complex curving roof, which required completely new methods of construction.
The Rolex Learning Centre ("EPFL Learning Centre") is the campus hub and library for the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Lausanne, Switzerland. Designed by the winners of 2010 Pritzker Prize, Japanese-duo SANAA, it opened on 22 February 2010.
Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, partners of the Tokyo-based design firm SANAA, were selected as the lead architects in EPFL's international competition of December 2004. The team was selected among famous architects and even some Pritzker Prize Laureates such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, Ábalos & Herreros and Xaveer De Geyter.
The construction took place between 2007 and 2009. It cost 110 million Swiss francs and was funded by the Swiss government as well as by private sponsors (Rolex, Logitech, Bouygues Construction, Crédit Suisse, Nestlé, Novartis and SICPA).
The building opened on 22 February 2010 and was inaugurated on 27 May 2010. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolex_Learning_Center

This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the galaxy cluster MCS J0416.1-2403. This is one of six being studied by the Hubble Frontier Fields programme. This programme seeks to analyse the mass distribution in these huge clusters and to use the gravitational lensing effect of these clusters, to peer even deeper into the distant Universe.
A team of researchers used almost 200 images of distant galaxies, whose light has been bent and magnified by this huge cluster, combined with the depth of Hubble data to measure the total mass of this cluster more precisely than ever before.

Alexandre Dang comes originally from a scientific background (Engineer at the Ecole Polytechnique (Paris) and at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (Paris).
Alexandre Dang has developed his own artistic creation; he creates artworks integrating solar energy to enable them to move (« kinetic art »). He is part of an artistic movement called Solar Art or Solar Artwork, which incorporates solar energy in artworks.
Alexandre Dang started his artistic work in 2004. He has been influenced by artists like Alexander Calder with his mobiles and stabiles and Jean Tinguely with his machines. He creates especially in situ installations with "Dancing Solar Flowers".
"Each solar flower is made up of an engine and a solar cell. The solar cell collects sunlight and turns it into electricity. With electricity, the motor starts and the flower moves".
"This is socially conscious art that raises awareness about respect for the environment, sustainable development, renewable energy, and more generally, our modes of production and consumption".[1]
Beyond the aesthetic dimension, his art works also trigger debate on the use of energy today and on the energy perspectives in the future. In addition, Alexandre Dang organizes regularly workshops to raise public awareness on sustainable energy through art. Some workshops were held notably in schools (European School of Uccle (Brussels), European School of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert (Brussels) ... ), during the European Solar Days or during festivals such as the festival Couleur Café.
He cofounded Solar Solidarity International (a Non Profit International Association) which raises awareness about solar energy and contributes financially to solar electrification projects in developing countries (schools, hospitals ... ).
Alexandre Dang has supported the solar electrification of the hospital of Daga-Youndoum, in Senegal; the solar electrification of a school in M'Pédougou, in Mali; the electrification, heating and solar cooking of the orphanage MikumiKids in Tanzania.

This area of Paris is located on the northern slope of a hill on the left bank of the Seine.
The urban area built on Sainte-Geneviève is a part of the Latin Quarter, which hosts several prestigious institutions and schools: the Sorbonne, the Collège de France, the former Ecole Polytechnique, the Ecole Normale Superieure, the former law faculty etc.
A curiosity: even Woody Allen must have been impressed by this view because it is exactly from the same staircase that I took these images that an important scene from the film "Midnight in Paris" was shot. Here the protagonist, at the stroke of midnight, sees the 1920 Peugeot which takes him back in time.

Fluctuat nec mergitur is a Latin phrase meaning "Tossed but not sunk". The motto has been used since at least 1358 by the city of Paris.
Fluctuat nec mergitur is the motto of Paris, France, translated "Il est battu par les flots, mais ne sombre pas": "She is tossed by the waves but does not sink". This motto is present in the city coat of arms depicting a ship floating on a rough sea. Both motto and city arms have their origins in the river Seine boatsman's corporation; this powerful guild ruled the city's trade and commerce as early as the Roman era.
Although this corporation through the centuries became an entity resembling more a municipal government than a trade organization, they maintained their original arms and motto, and it is for this that the Mairie de Paris bears them still today. It was made official on November 24, 1853 by Baron Haussmann.
The motto appears on the coat of arms of the City of Paris, as well as on the official livery of the Paris Fire Brigade. Following the November 2015 Paris attacks, the Latin-language motto had a surge in popularity and was used in social media as a symbol of Paris' resistance in the face of terrorism.
The coat of arms on this picture is located on the street at the entrance of Jardin de l'Ecole Polytechnique.
