I had four wonderful hours in Paris, after having been to a workshop at the Ecole Polytechnique at Orsay. It was only a few hours before the Thalys left for Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), but I made good use by walking past Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde, the Arc de Triomphe, the Tour d'Eiffel and back along the Seine river.
I usually don't upload shots from my phone, and in this case it doesn't do justice to this beautiful city. Katrin and I will be visiting Paris this summer, and I can't wait to have more time and a better camera on my hands.
After all the large and small European (and American) cities I've been to, Paris has definitely been my favorite. What surprised me most about it was that it actually is a lot like you imagine it, after seeing movies and reading about it. It isn't loud, dirty or chaotic at all, something I had feared in advance. The only thing that was very stressful was finding my way through the giant complex train stations, be it the Gare du Nord or smaller stations.

This December 6th is the 25th anniversary of the assassination of 14 women at L'Ecole Polytechnique, at the University of Montreal. In 1991, the Canadian parliament declared December 6th to be our "National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women."
Please join the ceremony and protest actions at the site of the Women's Monument, Marker of Change (Thornton Park) to honour all women and girls who have suffered violence.
Ceremony includes:
Welcome by Audrey Rivers, Squamish First Nations Elder.
MC Angela Marie MacDougall of Battered Women's Support Services will guide us through the event.
Lorelei Williams, St'at'imc/Sts'ailes First Nations woman and founder of Butterflies in Spirit, will share the "Am I Next" call to action, which includes the call for a federal inquiry into the missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Margaret Dragu, as Lady Justice, leads a group of multi-disciplinary artists, in an art-aktion called The Library Project that is a tribute to Malala Yousafzai, the 16 year old Pakistani teenager shot by the Taliban for promoting education for girls.
The Raging Grannies will sing one of their unique songs of protest, written for the day.
Dalannah Gail Bowen will sing to bring us together towards the end of the ceremony.
A group meditation will be followed by a minute of silence.
Mid-ceremony a circle of protest actions will take place simultaneously, as participants explore the circle:
- Students will "Carry That Weight" by carrying a mattress onto the site to echo and amplify the action of the student who was raped in her dorm while attending the University of Columbia.
- Pink crosses will be raised at the site to draw attention to the heart-rending protests in Mexico where the City of Juarez has had one of the highest murder rates of women and girls in the world.
- Wenlido women's self defense instructor will hold a demonstration.
- The "Leftover Women" phenomenon in China will be challenged by a woman from the Richmond Women's Resource Centre.

Bees, fish and robots solve difficult network problems together
Networks are ubiquitous in our world today and are growing and complexifying at a global scale, from traffic and logistics to social networks and the “Internet of Things.” Optimal design of such networks is a difficult task, exploding in complexity with network size and connectivity. Thus, smart heuristics are a key technology – using randomized guessing as a form of provoked error is central to their functionality.
In ASSISIbf we aim for a radically different approach towards network optimization of this kind: We use “fuzzy” swarms of honeybees and fish, in association with autonomous robot swarms. These novel bio-hybrid “computational symbioses” efficiently search for optimal, or near-optimal, network configurations.
