Its generally accepted that one of the primary drivers of the 'Industrial Revolution' was the mass production of cast iron which began in the steep sided gorge through which the River Severn flows, between the parishes of Madeley (the opposite bank in the photo) and Benthall. In 1709 a mile downstream in the Shropshire village of Coalbrookdale, Abraham Darby pioneered an innovative method of iron smelting using coke from locally mined coal to fuel the furnace known as Bedlam, supplying the metal for the manufacture of machinery such as the steam engine, spinning jenny and the cotton gin upon which the Industrial Revolution was based. As industry around the gorge grew, so did the need for a strong and durable bridge to transport goods across the river. In 1773 the Shrewsbury architect Thomas Pritchard put forward plans for the world's first iron bridge across one of the busiest trading rivers in the country. Pritchard’s designs were approved by Act of Parliament in 1777 and construction commenced. Overseen by Darby’s grandson Abraham Darby III after Pritchard’s death, the 30 metre single-span bridge supported by five main semicircular ribs, formally opened on New Year’s Day 1781; using a total of 378 tons of iron at a cost of around £6,000, equivalent to approximately £1.4m today. The bridge continued to carry traffic including cars, lorries and buses until 1934 when it was finally closed to vehicles and designated an Ancient Monument. In 2017 it underwent a major conservation project to underpin and strengthen the structure and is now open to pedestrians once more. I don’t think Kerouac thought much about Sedro-Woolley, but he did think of it enough to mention it in three books; one of the books being ‘Desolation Angels’ in which this picture is named for. In fact, I can surely say with certainty that Jack Kerouac passed nearby this very spot in which lil’ Arly is set, but if only for a short while; he was very well known for just passing through.

I just re-read some of ‘Desolation Angels’ (sections 62 and 63 of the chapter Desolation in the World), and Sedro-Woolley hasn’t changed much... broads, booze, and broad-shouldered brutes. I think the only thing different is we haven’t a shoe store anymore! I know which bank he cashed his checks in. I know what bar he spotted the old man in. And I know the name and location of the shoe store. It’s kind of sad... I would like to buy a pair of shoes that feel like I am “walking in heaven”, but I want to buy them in downtown Sedro-Woolley too.

According to the English Heritage Grade II listing the Sutherland Works in Longton was built c1873. The factory was named after the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, MP for Staffordshire, whose Trentham Hall estate encompassed a large part of the Longton area. As a matter of interest, the Duke of Sutherland also built the 189 room Dunrobin Castle on his Sutherland estates in the far north of Scotland: an ironical name really, since his father the 1st Duke forcibly evicted over 4,000 people in the early C19th during the so-called Highland Clearances - 'Robin B*stard Castle' more like?! Sutherland Works was originally occupied by Skelson & Plant earthenware and china manufacturers. From 1889 the factory was operated by William Hudson producing fine quality bone china mugs and tea sets. The Hudson & Middleton families ran a number of potbanks on their own accounts (such as J.H.Middleton at the shared Bagnall Street Works of Burton, Morris & Co) and together at the Alma Works (later named the Enson Works see www.flickr.com/photos/nigelphoto2011/52682064534).

In 1941 the Government commandeered J.H.Middleton’s Bagnall Street works to store WW2 munitions so the two families joined forces again to become Hudson & Middleton. The company produced fine bone china at the Sutherland Works right up until 2016 when unfortunately it ceased trading. The bottle oven in the range shown here, was commissioned by the Gladstone Pottery Museum for a special celebration event on 29th August 1978 for a final firing of a coal-fuelled kiln in the Potteries. The building is now occupied by a C21st tech company making 3D printed parts for the automative industry. Taken with a 1976 Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera Alpha 1 on Polaroid (TIP) film
