The people across the street have occasionally been annoying, but I never really thought the graffiti to be the problem, or even a problem.

Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing
Self-publishing for authors is pointless because authors have no specialization or expertise in book marketing, publicity, public relations, arranging and conducting press interviews, scheduling book signings, fulfillment, distribution, or the thousands of other tasks that make a book successful. A book publisher provides a sense of literary belonging and family that is non-existent for the individual sitting at home self publishing. A book publisher has the expertise, network of individuals, key contacts, and funds to execute an organized book marketing plan. By allowing publishers to take care of the thousands of tasks needed for a book to reach success, the author is free to spend their time focusing on the most important element of the book, the writing. Publishers have editors, marketers, graphic artists, sales reps, publicity networks, a brand name, funding, and an organization. In contrast, the author has just them self and they will never be able to effectively compete with an organization created solely for the purpose of publishing. Publishers have spent their time and money leveraging their networks for the sole purpose of achieving success for authors. Authors are writers and publishers are publishers. Publishers cannot replace authors as it is the authors that are creating the product. However, if authors attempt to bypass the most vital element that contributes to their success, that is the publisher, then authors will have to attempt to imitate and re-create the steps needed to achieve success for their book. This is an impossibility because authors, no matter how trained in marketing or public relations, are not equipped, trained, funded, and/or prepared to deal with the thousands of tasks involved in bringing a book to market. If there are such authors, then they are most likely not good writers. Authors as writers must excel in one thing beyond all other matters, and that is writing. Although writing may seem easy or the ability to compose original works may seem arbitrary or taken lightly, it is among the greatest of skills that talent cannot and will not be able to ever replace. Literary talent does not equal writing skill and nor does writing skill equate to writing talent. It is the blend of creativity, readability, and many other factors that assist in the creation of a notable author. If authors are focusing on matters other than writing, how then can they begin to fathom that they will create works that are readable? It is the responsibility of the publisher to sift through the countless manuscripts it receives to garner which of them are worthy of attention. If it were not so, imagine the large quantity of quality-less and poorly written books that will be imposed upon the reading public. The music industry features hundreds of thousands of self published musicians that have sold nothing whatsoever. Just because musicians were able to distribute did not mean their music was purchased. The book industry is not different. Working with a book publisher enables the success of an author and prevents the author from wasting their time by trying to re-invent the wheel.
