Treacherous boulders, slippery with seaweed form a rocky beach extending 1km around the headland at Copt Point in Folkestone. This rocky and challenging terrain is the result of the eroding cliff face. The area has become rich in a wide range of brachiopods, bivalves and gastropods. Crinoids and belemnites are also commonly found. These fossils, unearthed from the fragile crumbling cliffs date back to the Cretaceous era (110-80 million years ago) and draw many visitors. This rocky shoreline is where I took the photos used in this HDR image.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range.

It’s a term used to describe a way to ‘digitally develop’ your photos using the tonal information contained in multiple exposures of the same shot. Combining a normal shot with a slightly underexposed shot and a slightly overexposed shot ensure that you have a good amount of detail in both the shadows and the highlights. A little creative post processing using photoshop can enhance the image and add some atmosphere.

The Point Lowly lighthouse was constructed in 1883 to guide ships safely through Spencer Gulf en route to Port Augusta and Port Pirie in South Australia. It was upgraded several times before being deactivated in 1993. It was reactivated in 1995 and is a tourist attraction for the Whyalla area and an icon of the Point Lowly area. (Source: Wikipedia)

Point Betsie Lighthouse (Michigan, USA) was established in 1858 as a round/integral brick structure with attached quarters. The light is still active and stands 37 feet tall. The Coast Guard used Point Betsie as a residence until 1996. The light was finally automated as of 1983.

Point Wilson Lighthouse at Fort Worden State Park, Port Townsend, Washington. Built in 1913 by the United States Lighthouse Service, its height of 51 feet is the tallest in Puget Sound, marking the entrance to Admiralty Inlet. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Washington State Heritage Register. Still an important navigational aid today, a computer located at the Coast Guard Air Station at Port Angeles monitors the light, which was automated in 1976.

The Point Arena Lighthouse stands tall and proud on the Northern California Mendocino Coast.

There has been a lighthouse here since 1870. This particular lighthouse was built in 1908, replacing the original tower which had been damaged beyond repair in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

This new reinforced concrete lighthouse was built by a construction company specializing in industrial smokestacks, which is why it looks like one.

This photo is a few years old, but since I've posted some pics of the Split Point Lighthouse and its surroundings recently, I thought some views from the top would be nice too.

Apparently this lighthouse can be seen from 20 nautical miles away at sea level.
